David Lindhagen showing up is truly the cherry on top of a perfect scene.
When they all correct the cop when he's tries pronouncing his name🤣
Its lindhagen
@@oneballwizard406 I laughed out loud 😂
Jacob takes off his ring before he throws the punch so he doesn't hurt him too much
@@berimboplata it’s actually done so you don’t break your own finger with a punch
My favorite part of this scene is when Jacob immediately goes to punch David. Shows you how much he values Cal even amidst the awkwardness of Hannah being Cal's daughter.
He also took that punch from the other dad without any response, just stopped the guy from hurting Cal and then stepped back. Such a great scene!!
Still an asshole for dating his teenage daughter
@@squattingheads she isn't a teenager, she was in law school so around mid 20's
@@squattingheads Didn't you notice that Hannah doesn't actually live with them?
squattingheads yah daughter is mid 20s. Reason why Jacob was shocked that Cal was her father and Cal said he had her when he was 17
I love how Cal calls a timeout on the fight because he’s genuinely concerned and interested in his son’s life. He’s a good father
I mean even Jacob calls that out when Cal ain't approving him.
Felt kinda cringe, fam
What he should be genuinely concerned about is the fact that his son is a creepy stalker.
@@bluecanary1212 How is that being a creepy stalker? He's a younger kid with a crush on his babysitter. That's really not that uncommon. I've seen that happen lots of times.

for once a plot twist that we genuinely didnt see it coming
I genuinely admire the twist they put up here. It was SO GOOD I still remember the holyshit laugh I had watching this years ago.
And one that made absolute perfect sense!
What plot twist?..it was obvious from the start she was his daughter
How was it obvious?
Surprisingly yes. Normally I can predict movies as I watch but I honestly didn’t see this coming
This scene really showed how carefully thought out the script was, this has to be THE best written Rom-Com of all time
Agreed

Yeah it felt like it was something written by Shakespeare
Nah, your opinion isn't valid.
The movie was made by Steve Carrel
Ryan’s little ‘hm’ after the officer says, “keep it in the family” is one of the many perfect things about this scene
I totally forgot about that now rewatching it he seems to genuinely laugh as if he accidentally let out that squeak😂
What was the officer implying
That was genuine. The director kept it in.
@@FireFist711 i hope thats true. I always wondered because it feels/looks genuine and I love it.

It was an awesome movie. Fun loving, positive vibes
One of greatest turn over!
I thought the movie should have been better. It has everything going for it, but somehow fell flat.
THIS scene was great, but it's the punchline of a long and tedious joke
Saw it in theater. Once of the biggest laugh in front of a movie
Ditto
can we take a moment to appreciate that Jacob jumped in to help Cal, his bro, and takes a punch from some dude he'd never met in the process.....THEN punches David Lindhagen because of what he did to his bro.
that is the mark of a true bro...and Cal should be lucky to have a dude like that with his daughter.
I'm Glad he forgives him at the end and gets on board with Jacob dating his daughter
Even if he's a tru bro, would you give your daughter to him when you know he's a player( and he teach you that)
Oh yes Jacob is definitely best boi
Nah, he's a good friend but no one wants a dude like that with their daughter
He's reminded of his late father(who died, he told Hannah in the bedroom scene), that's why he's so attached to Cal, and wanted to help him in literally every possible way, even telling Hannah to call his dad. He's a good guy, just lost I guess.
“Stay away from my daughter!”
“Stay away from my DAUGHTER!”
“I don’t even know you!!”

That little giggle from Gosling after "Keep it in the family" will never fail to make me lose it every time.
I honestly don’t get it 😂
@@kareemwilt8781 i also dont get it
@@bpdbhp1632 I at least took it to be playing off the fact that Jacob (Ryan Gosling) *is* keeping it in the family in one sense by dating Cal’s (Steve Carrel) daughter which is what sparked the entire thing.
@@kareemwilt8781 They're all sleeping around. This all started with a divorce due to adultery. Then many things happened since that point, and his character is just finding out that his "apprentice/friend" is the father of the woman he's in love with. It's all very ironic.
The best part is that the laugh wasn't even scripted. Gosling just had a slip but played it off so well, aided by Carell then improvising his response.
“Dad, this is Jacob, my boyfriend”
“No IT’s not”
😭😭😭
I watch A LOT of movies, and this is, hands down, a top 10 scene for me. The setup was perfect. It absolutely blindsided me the first time I watched the movie. The convergence of every major plot line executed beautifully. Love it.
What are some of your other favourite scenes?
Yeah, I was confused the time I watch it too.
Blindsided is exactly how I felt also but it makes so much sense afterwards. Was glorious to watch unspoiled
It was brilliant! I think the fake twist at the parent teacher conference played a major role in fooling everyone. Let’s face it, all rom cola have a twist, and that one came at a great moment. Then you have Jessica’s parents finding the picture which adds to hiding the reveal of who Nanna is because you think that will be the big conflict as he’s trying to reconcile with his wife. And when all that comes to light, in comes David! This scene was masterful, but it only works because the movie did all of the set up necessary to pull it off, and boy did they!
Yep 🙂
Jacob and Cal are having a fight and yet Jacob still knocks David Lindhagen's lights out because Cal is his best friend.
Yes, that's true friendship
That's what you do for a best friend, especially if you don't have a ton of friends, period.

I laughed so hard.
Kevin Bacon popping outta nowhere made the scene epic. Especially when the guys correct the officer on Lindhagen's pronunciation 😆
Hahaha! Hilarious! And Julianne Moore saying "Yes", when Kevin Bacon asks: "Is this a bad time?"
Ooh, I had it bad for Kevin Bacon when he did "Footloose." Unfortunately none of the boys at my school looked like him, or brooded over something I said.
The officer is Bill Kim ifykyk
Gosling is so good in this. First the pause and blink followed by "Cal? What are you doing here?" Then the head turn after she says he's dad and his confused eye roll and "i cant breathe". The flirting with the mom, and "You're David Lindhagen? Okay" and takes off his ring. The mid fight "oh my god, what are you grabbing?" And obviously the giggle at the end. Watched this as kind of a joke with my mates and we were all floored at how good it actually was
absolutely, had the same experience. You captured the scene really well too
Gosling had like 3 good films consecutively .....Drive, Blue Valentine and this one.........
@@memoranda1 Oh you have no idea. Ryan Gosling had Drive, Blue Valentine, Ides of March (one of his underrated films), and The Place Beyond the Pines all come out within about two years. From 2010 to 2012. That's just his first streak.
He then had The Big Short (worst out of this streak but people love him in it), The Nice Guys (his best comedy), La La Land (Oscar nom and need I say more?), and finally Blade Runner 2049 (masterpiece of a film and now an underrated classic). The last two are considered to be among the best films of the 2010s. They also all came out within about two years.
Definitely one of the best romantic comedies of the 2010s

Damn near perfect scene. From the writing, to the acting. Every character/actor gets their moment to shine, showing off their characterization perfectly in a little 4 minute moment. It's one of those scenes that should be taught film school, in a movie that most people overlooked.
Ofcourse none of it would work if they had simply revealed earlier who Hannah was, looking back it does seem very strange that her scenes do not at all mention her parents separation and impending divorce.
I actually was taught this scene/ film in film school, several years ago now. I had seen it in theaters before school and had watched it many times before but this script was a part of my curriculum when i went to school for screenwriting. The whole script, and movie overall is a masterpiece. I highly recommend people watch it but also read the script because there are many changes in the final script to what actually ends up on the screen and that script is incredible on its own.
@@mnomadvfx pl

So right. Everyone was shining the whole time.
Hannah being revealed at Cal and Emily’s child is one of the greatest curveballs in cinema.
It's Kevin Bacon's "I don't even know you!!!" line that always gets me lol, everyone there knows who he is and what he's done and he's just strolling in like he owns the place 😅
Lmfao it’s a pretty brazen move to waltz into someone’s backyard and mention their wife left her sweater in his car right in front of the him. He deserved to get popped in the face 😂
I love how Jacob is the audience surrogate for this scene from the moment he walks on: he's confused, he points out Julianna Moore is a hot mum, he knocks down Lindhagen and he laughs at the wrong moment.
And he gets a knock on the face!

The first time watching it was a masterful twist and genuine "oh shit" moment that now you'll never get back.
I stumbled across this scene randomly today then decided to watch the movie and I definitely wish I hadn't seen it beforehand.
Aw goddamn I'm gonna regret having watched this scene only huh..... Damnit
Exactly. It was the epic scene and the centerpiece of the whole movie. I just laughed and laughed while watching this scene for the first time while watching the movie.
Me, I am unfortunate soul
I haven't watched the movie yet and have no idea what's going on.
I like how Jacob is the least hurt in the fight and the only one not visibly thrashed at the end
I love how Ryan Gosling loved his boy so much that in the heat of battle he decked the guy that broke his boy's marriage up. We all need friends like that
So, while I completely see where a lot of the comments on this video and others are coming from in regards to Jacobs reaction to Lindhagen I feel something is very often missed. To be clear, I totally agree that it shows his character and willingness to stand up to his best friend even if they’re in the heat of a fight themselves. But, I also think there is another layer to it. Its not confirmed and its only a somewhat subtle hint but it is implied that Jacobs mom also had an affair.
If you rewatch it and notice two parts, first when Cal asks Jacob why he’s helping him and Jacob says “lets just say you remind me of someone” and second is when he’s bonding with Hannah the night they spend together and he’s talking about his mom and dad. He mentions both positively but rewatch it with this lense and I feel youll pick up on the implication!
So he is standing up for his best bud but he’s also taking it out on a similar house wrecker and saboteur to the one that came in between his parents.
That Kevin Bacon smile at 2:27. So naive. He has no idea what he's just walked into. Everyone is so great in this movie.
Not really though, he works with the mother so he knows what Cal looks like - coming up on an argument involving a woman and the guy she was married to for decades because you slept with her is a very bad idea under normal circumstances, but rubbing his nose in it by demonstrating she was in your car like that was just asking for an ass whoopin.
@Ddhfacetyy His picture is in her office.
Not to mention that they've been married for years it's not a stretch to imagine that he has been to her work before.
Ryan Gossling’s character shows his true class when david comes in lol.

The film is from 2008 and tells the true story of Admirla Kolchak and his young lover Anna Timiryova. Kolchak abandoned his family for a younger woman. As the story is real, there is no way to criticize it.
