Doorstep of Opportunity: Hamilton (1946)

Doorstep of Opportunity was a video produced in 1946 by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. This is the only known copy of this video (35mm with sound). It is very apparent where edits have occurred to the audio: the splicing technician didn't have a voice that closely resembled the original commentator. Regardless, this video (and it's amusing soundtrack) portray a Hamilton, Ontario, very different than today. In 1946 when industry and business were booming in Steeltown, a dedicated workforce was necessary to "supply the steelmaking infernos" with labourers. Although much has changed in Hamilton in the 60 years since this video was produced, there are still many familiar and nostalgic vistas visible throughout.
