As far as layout is concerned, I always go for the most minimal spaghetti as I can. Modules with only bottom jacks ( In your case, Beads, Plaits, Dual Dagger, the Instruo at bottom left, Data Bender, FX aid, and the 4ms module, all on the top row. All knobs are accessible without cables covering them. The others all have jacks top and bottom, so it doesn't really matter. I'm just about done on the first of 2 Mantis towers, each tower is 3x Mantis cases fixed together with the proprietary Tiptop brackets - Case #3 and the brackets arrive next week, which will make an 18U 104hp (624hp total) tower on the right hand side. An identical tower will follow on the left between now and Christmas, there are already enough modules to fill just over half of that second tower. I'll hold onto my 4x RB6U cases for the time being and see if I think I will still need them or not. Not sure yet. As a result, if I want my case to be functional, I gotta make the best of my layout. Bottom row of each tower contains only modules with all jacks at the top - Metropolix, Tetrapad, Erica LXR, Scales, and others. Mostly controller modules, or things that require a lot more hands on use. Top rows contain only modules with all jacks at the bottom - Mutable, Joranalogue, Data. The 4 rows in between are mostly jacks on top and bottom - All my Make Noise, plus a stack of utilities and fx/dynamics. I'm getting 2x pairs (maybe 3) of the Doepfer A 180-9 Multicores to bring the far left and far right sides together more conveniently, as well as the top and bottom rows in the same way. Spaghetti is reduced to an absolute minimum on top and bottom rows because of the modules' jack layouts, and between each tower too, with the multicores. Yeah, there will still be a rat's nest in the middle, but that's unavoidable. But at least I can mitigate the upper and lower rows as best as possible, and avoid 150cm cables between L-R towers whenever possible. I was working with 4x RB 6U's up until a couple of months ago, but started upgrading to the Mantis cases. Best move I could have made. In the same horizontal desk space that 2x RB6u's held 346hp with a total of 3.2mA, I can hold 624 hp with a total of 9mA. So, instead of a total of 792hp and 6.4mA, I'll have 1248hp, with 18mA, all in the same desk space. Seriously, as much as I liked my RB's as I began, upgrading to Mantis is the best choice I was able to make without throwing down for a full one-piece monster case. I can still unscrew individual Mantis cases, and change their positions within the towers, without having to re-rack entire cases. I can shuffle cases around the full rig like shuffling modules around the case, if i want to. But generally, I don't - I actually really hate re-racking. Nothing fun about it, for me. Will I keep my Mutable modules vertically within 6U of 104hp of one tower, or horizontally across 3U of 208hp of both towers? I don't know. Still gotta figure that part out yet. In short though, yeah, maximizing the real estate with the most efficient layout is crucial. Keeping modules close to their best partners is important, and keeping the tangle down to a minimum makes things easier. Once I find my groove with the twin towers, then the rig will stay fixed for a good long time. Once it's all in place and I'm happy with the full layout, I'll make sure to tag you in a video of the whole system so you can see how it is. I'm working on the graphic design for a YT channel now, I've got some terrible dad joke level puns lined up, just gotta get the photoshop work and an audio intro done while I complete the build. I always love learning from your videos, so I hope that when I start making my own, I can return the favour.
I hope you enjoyed SuperBooth, I really enjoyed this video, the patch sounds amazing. I own the RackBrute 6U and some decent modules in it, but I do not have the skills (yet) to create such wonderful sound palettes. Thanks for keeping me inspired.
A 6u rack brute feels like the perfect amount of space to get a really fun setup going. I've had mine for a few years. That isn't to say the itch to plug another one into those bottom mounts doesn't cross my mind from time to time 😬
The Crunin on Bass is just such an incredible sound. Sounds so much bigger than that little stereo module would make you assume. Also the Atlas was not something I had on my radar. Looks neat
