      Hi Randy, yes it could have been a lot worse, you saw what it did to our diesel stove, goodness knows what damage it would’ve done to the engine if any of that sludge had got into it! Doesn’t bear thinking about! 🫣 Thanks Randy! xx

    This episode has prompted me to do 2 things, 1 buy a 12v oil pump and 2 use it to take a sample from the bottom of my diesel tank. Good job I did, as I have sludge much like yourselves, luckily Del will be able to come and sort it out early in the new year. Thanks again Julie & Martin

    Hi guys, some very helpful tips there on the diesel filters. It's one of those things you have to keep an eye on, just like the oil filter in a car engine. I have to say it though....Your Pepsi Max don't harf taste funny.🤣🤣😂😂 What ever you do don't put it back in the fridge.🤣🤣🤪😵🥴🥵🤢🤮It's truly wonderful that there are still good people out there who are not out to rip you off. Stay safe guys and happy cruising.👍🏻👍🏻❤❤

      Hi Geoff, so glad you enjoyed this one, we really wanted to show our experience and hope others don’t make that mistake! Also, we thought fuel polishing was only for if you had a problem, we didn’t realise that it should be something done regularly every 4 years! But obviously prevention is better than cure, so it all makes sense now. We’re so pleased we had it done and we’re very lucky that Del was so close by! Lol re the Pepsi 😂🤣 Have a lovely week , thanks Geoff! xx

      Hi Donna, we really hope this does help other boaters, which is why we put it out straight away as an extra video. We didn’t realise that cleaning the fuel should be a maintenance thing, we always thought it was only something you did if you had a problem!! Obviously, prevention is better than cure, so we have now added it to our maintenance schedule! So glad we’ve had it done now, we can relax that the engine is safe from all sorts of problems! Glad you liked it Donna, we try to explain things so that everyone can understand, so really pleased to hear that it does come across that way. Thanks Donna! xx

    @briankennedy5061 Месяц назад +1

    Hi Julie & Martin , I saw your West Ham plaque and thought I would share my knowledge with you as a fellow hammer. The problem with diesel bug is not actually the bug but the defecation from the bug , the bug lives in a layer between the water and fuel an oxygen rich layer. Looking at the diesel from your tank it didn’t show any bad signs of diesel bug just sludge in the bottom so there is no need to add diesel bug killer. The bug lives at the very bottom of the tank as water is heavier than diesel and diesel bug CANNOT be transferred to your tank from another tank ie when fuelling ( unless the dip take of pipe is sat so low and there is lots of water in there). What can be transferred is the defecation from the bug as the defecation is lighter than diesel and so just floats around as a very fine paste so always use a diesel supplier that has a high turn over of diesel. Depending on how long the bug is in your tank as to the amount of defecation in the tank. It takes a minimum of 5 passes to clean diesel which is roughly 3/4 hours with varying filters down to 5 micron hence the term fuel polishing . You can buy water traps to go in your tank if you suspect you have water in there they are called water hogs, they come with string and you just pop it in your tank for up-to 3 weeks and it only collects water. I dealt with diesel bug on a professional basis in my job. Hope this makes sense and helps

    Thanks for this, I was interested to see how it was done. My neighbour had his fuel polished and now has a problem with his diesel stove, to be sorted shortly. It may or may not be connected to the cleaning. Take care x

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  Месяц назад +2

      Hi Alan, it sounds like your friend’s diesel stove uses the main diesel tank and has had some sludge go into the stove. We have a separate tank and Marti. Often takes some out of the back tank with the jiggle pipe and puts it into the Refleks separate tank, only this time he had put the jiggle pipe right to the bottom, therefore sucking up sludge and muck, then without realising, transferred it to the front tank 🤦‍♀️ And because our Refleks stove is gravity fed, it always tajes the diesel from the bottom of the tank. If your neighbour’s diesel stove runs from the main tank, then when the fuel clean was done, it would have stirred up the sediment and could have gone through the stove’s pump. A good clean of the stove should sort it. Your neighbour should be able to do what Martin did to clean it all out. Glad you enjoyed this one, speak soon! xx

    Informative vlog - possibly? will? become a must watch safety vlog. And easy to understand (even for a landlubber😂).
    But the cost Julie? - Reasonable only because Martin had the skill to undertake other "repairs" would have been a cost blow out otherwise.
    Would it be a good idea to have other "fuel users" on board checked as a precaution at the same time? Jan Adelaide

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  Месяц назад

      Hi Jan, yes hopefully this will help other boaters. We always thought you only needed fuel polished or cleaned if you had a problem! But obviously prevention rather than cure applies here, we wouldn’t want any of that sludge getting into our engine, we were blissfully unaware that it was there until Martin dragged it up in the jiggle pipe! We’ve added it to our maintenance schedule now too and hope that others will do the same! We thought that Martin had spotted it before any got through to the fire, and normally, if anything else runs using the diesel from the back tank, it would have been isolated before the treatment started. Our Stove has a separate tank at the front that is not connected to the back tank, so until the fire started burning wrong, we hadn’t realised. So glad you enjoyed this video Jan, thank you for your comment! xx

I know it can be hard to feel what you're doing while wearing gloves, but getting diesel all over your hands like that can lead to some very serious problems. It's a shame that there isn't a way to filter as you are refueling. It wouldn't solve the problem of dirty fuel altogether but it could make it better overall. It's kind of good that Martin did get down to the sediment otherwise you wouldn't have known. It caused a lot of work and extra expense but now you know it's all good. Peace of mind has value! ❤

These things are always going to crop up when living on a boat, it’s how you deal with them isn’t it, we feel good knowing we now have clean diesel, so a happy engine! I bring diesel for our boat with me (I get it off a mate who has a large farming business so has a large turnover of diesel) I’m surprised how many bits of muck that gets in the mesh of the funnel I use when filling up I often wonder when I buy a some off the canal side how much dirt get into the diesel tank as it doesn’t go through the funnel mesh The tanks on boats are designed to hold a bit of sediment in the bottom as the outlet is normally a inch or two from the bottom

    Curiosity question, in the U K do they restrict usage of the red dyed diesel to narrow boats and agriculture equipment? Here in the USA the dyed fuel is for agriculture equipment primarily and is priced cheaper than diesel fuel used for passenger vehicles.

    • @robtheplod
      @robtheplod Месяц назад +1

      Yes its illegal to use in road vehicles....

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  Месяц назад

      Yes Norman, it’s very similar over here in the UK. The red diesel is for agricultural vehicles and boaters for heating also. The diesel we use for propulsion has to have tax paid, so when we buy diesel, we as boaters declare a percentage that we are going to use for propulsion and a percentage to be used for heating, so in the summer, it’s higher for propulsion, as you’re only heating water, yet in the winter, it’s mostly heating. Hope this makes sense, thanks Norman! xx

    What a total waste of money fuel polishing is the biggest con in narrowboating never have this done it causes more problems then in cures. You have now had somebody stir up all the silt in the bottom of your tank he will tell you it's all cleaned out but that is just not true if left alone it just sits on the bottom and is no trouble now being stirred up it could cause no end of trouble.If you ever get water in your tank a stiff pipe lowerd to the bottom of the tank carefully and your 12v pump will suck out the water no problem don't wiggle it about that stirs up the slit causing problems

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  Месяц назад +1

      Hi BigKDL, we would rather be safe than sorry, we saw the muck coming out of the tank and clean diesel going back in, plus all the gunk that was left in the filters and bowls at the end, so we feel it’s money well spent. Thankfully we’ve never had water in the tank, but yes your suggestion of using the 12v pump would be good. Thank you for your comment, much appreciated! xx
