    Ben Folds, a judge for Home Free's season of The Sing-Off, is the one who initially called the guys "Home Fries" during that TV competition. After that it morphed into the name for Home Free's fan base 🏡🍟
    The HF guys show their creativity once again in this video: they used the TikTok format to manage their separation during quarantine ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
    Tim staying so still to keep from falling out of the boat he's standing in--makes me laugh because every time I see him in this I think of the animated pirate dolls in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean. 😆
    And those castanets!! Adam Rupp's percussion and sound effects are second to none!! 🥰

    Thanks for your reaction! How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including sea swells & castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

    Sea shanties actually were sailors working songs, and came to it's peak much much later after all pirate things were already over. All "pirate" thing was inspired by Hollywood using sea shanties in scenes associtaed with pirates😁. Great Home Free performance as always, and a great your guys reaction as always!

    That was a fun one. This was done during "those times" when we all were in our homes, but Home Free was still entertaining us dropping videos left and right. The first singer here Chance, wrote a song they performed for a new Ubisoft game called "Skull and Bones" You should check it out too if you haven't already.

    This was done during Covid so they weren’t together. Yeah some out dressed the others. Adam (beatboxer) was crazy good. Did you hear the castanets in the last song? How does he do that? This was so good that Ubisoft (game maker) saw it and came to Chance (started the song in red hat) and asked Chance to write a song for their new game Skull and Bones. It’s a great song if you want to hear that one…Skull and Bones. Right now they have a lyric video with scenes from the game and a short live one for the Ubisoft crowd. Really fun!!!🥰

    Their Sea Shanty Medley went viral on TikTok primarily in Asia for people to dance to. This video led to Ubisoft to commission Home Free to write an original sea shanty for a soon released pirate game. Chance wrote the shanty called Skull and Bones the same as the game.
    There are two video versions. A shorter live version where they introduce the song at a gamer convention. Chance plays the guitar and Austin the mandolin. The lyric version is longer where they sound like a whole choir .
    The term Home Fries probably began at The Sing-Off which was an acapella competition show. Pentatonix won it the third season. Home Free won the fourth season. Voiceplay also competed the fourth season. Home Free and Voiceplay became close friends despite being competitors. The acapella world is a small cooperative world. Ben Folds, one of The Sing-Off judges, called them Home Fries once when evaluating their performance. The other two judges were Jewel and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men.

    Sea shanties are sailor’s work songs. The practical flannel shirt, white linen shirt, and stocking cap are more historically accurate than the fantasy pirate garb. But the outfits reflect the guy’s personalities. 😊
    Some of these songs go back to the 1800’s. And being passed down orally, the melodies stay the same, but the words change. The Wellerman song refers to the supply ships that would restock New Zealand based whaling ships associated with the Weller brothers, not pirates. Well, not actual buccaneers anyway.
    Thanks for reacting. Like the original shanties, this medley is meant to be a shared experience.

    • @stephanginther9051
      @stephanginther9051 Год назад +2

      I love the history of that kind of thing. One funny thing is, 'The Wellerman' which *started* this whole trend when it went viral...is not actually a sea shanty (or so I heard), its a folk song. That said, I ain't mad at its inclusion. I do love that song.

    • @itzel1735
      @itzel1735 Год назад +4

      @@stephanginther9051 Here’s what I take from the history. The Weller brothers had a flax, timber and whale oil business in New Zealand. Their ships imported a variety of items, including sugar, tea and rum. Which was pay for the workers, in lieu of cash.
      The song lyrics include many references to harvesting and processing whale. Including “tonguing”, which was cutting the blubber off whale carcasses for refining into oil. So the song could definitely be from the onshore workers, but seems to be linked directly to the whaling business.
      But I wasn’t there, so can’t say for sure. 👍🏽

    • @itzel1735
      @itzel1735 Год назад +2

      And the melody could certainly have other origins. It’s common for new lyrics to be put to older music.

      @@itzel1735 Very true. Especially in Irish folk music, they had a bunch of rhythms that were reused over and over, just the words changed. Bob Dylan wrote 'Rambl'n Gambl'n Willie' to the pattern of the Irish tune, 'Brenen On The Moor', specifically the Clancy Brother's sped up version. Its a cool tradition I think.

    Sea shanties are work songs. It takes a lot of people working together to pull ropes and raise anchors. The beat of the shanty made sure everyone pulled together.

  • @richardkawucha1232
    @richardkawucha1232 Год назад

    Breakfast has "hash brown" potatoes, which are shredded potatoes. Home Fries are thinly sliced potatoes fried.
    Sea shanties were used by sailors, on wooden sailing ships to keep a crew happy, to keep a crew in time while hoisting anchor or hoisting the yardarms/and or sails, or for when ships were becalmed and the sailors rowed their smaller boats, to tow the ship into a breeze. Different crews sometimes had different words for the same melody.
    Sailors, in merchant vessels or pirate vessels had no uniform. They either wore what they brought on board, in their sea bag, or purchased cloths from ships stores against their wages.
    For a better idea of the difference in food the hands aboard a ship, compared to the officers watch Russel Crowe in Master and Commander.

    Enjoyed your reaction. I too am an a cappella enthusiast and agree that Home Free, Pentatonix, and VoicePlay are three of the finest groups with tons of content to explore, but you're missing one. That one is a group called Voctave which is different than the others. It's larger and has no beatboxer. Think of it this way. Home Free, Pentatonix and VoicePlay are the combos, and Voctave is the orchestra. If you'd like a suggestion on a starting point with Voctave, listen to their Disney Love Medley, which features Kirsten Maldenado of Pentatonix. You could also check out their stunning Disney Princess Medley which features each of their female vocalists. You will not be disappointed!!!
    I look forward to many more of your reactions to all four of the aforementioned groups... they are simply the best!

    Its a bit of an odd one to do as a first, but I recommend doing it this way nonetheless. Voiceplay's cover of 'Valhalla Calling' by Miracle Of Sound'. They have A LOT of great music and its just as big of a rabbit hole as Home Free and just as worth doing, but I feel like Valhalla Calling is a good intro to them. It even features a former member, J-none, who left the group to join the US navy. J-none was their primary baritone before leaving and Cesar, another *amazing* singer, took his place. He's the black dude with the awesome warrior knot hairstyle in the music video.

The history behind these songs can get really interesting and some of them have some legends connected to them! It can be really fun looking into that stuff!

    shanghai (v.)
    "to drug or otherwise render a man unconscious and ship him as a sailor on a vessel wanting hands," 1854, American English, from the practice of kidnapping to fill the crews of ships making extended voyages, such as to the Chinese seaport of Shanghai.
