3 in 30: How to Make a Woodblock Print Like Kawase Hasui

VMFA Curatorial Assistant, Madeleine Dugan, celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by exploring Kawase Hasui's artistic practice. This presentation examines the collaborative Japanese woodblock making process of shin-hanga, or "new prints," that developed during the first half of the 20th century and compares Hasui's rare, original watercolor designs to his final woodblock prints produced by publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō.
