    It isn't the actual first boss, but the first truly tough boss in FF9 is Black Mage #1 and Sealion. Considering that you have to take down both with just Zidane.

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Год назад +1

      I think when I played the FF7R demo, I said to myself, "It's so nice to be excited for a game again." I don't play a lot of video games, and Square Enix has sort of become the only publisher I play games from now (not all of SE's games, mind you, but their games probably "get me" the most, especially their stuff aimed at the new JRPG fanbase). I literally played FFXV from when I got it in February of 2017 until whenever Remake came out...and that is about the ONLY game I played during those years. I just did not find anything else worth my time. This is why I'm happy for this FF7 remake era (aside from the recent Crisis Core, lol...and aside from a few voice acting changes). I know I'll finally be eating good with games for awhile. In the meantime while we wait for part 2 of this era, I'm now playing Nier: Automata (after playing Remake exclusively since 2020) and I said the same thing once more...it's good to be excited for a game again.

    I would talk about Manasvin Warmech from FF13. If the first encounter is really easy at the beginning of the game, the second fight is much harder (and it's technically the first real Boss since we just opened up the Paradygm System). The fight is not easy at this point and many players died on it.

    The opening bombing mission may be one of the most iconic and most important opening segments in all of gaming history. It does such a good job of engrossing players, both in the original and in Remake, and the Guard Scorpion/Scorpion Sentinel is such an iconic boss design. Everything about FFVII's opening is absolutely perfect (minus that poor translation).

    • @gogauze
      @gogauze Год назад +4

      Honestly, there are so many firsts, technical and otherwise, in the OG that I have to tell the story of one of the least appreciated technology leaps in gaming history:
      FMVs had already become a popular way to deliver cutscenes on PCs, in the early 2ks, but no one had ever really managed the transition to FMV and back very well. The technology for seamless swaps between the two modes didn't truly exist yet.
      Consoles, especially, had a rich tradition of doing a lot with very little in the way of resources. lt was so bad that the prevailing wisdom of the time was to create a save state, dump the memory running most of the game, load a video player, play the FMV, dump the player, reload the game, world, and state, then FINALLY return control to the player. As you can imagine, the loading times murdered the pacing and immersion. But whatcha gonna do, become a gd sorcerer?
      Even the engineers at Sony, while creating the PS1, assumed that this was still going to be the case with their console too. That's why we got a player baked into the original Playstation's hardware; the original feature was meant for devs to offload some of the coding tedium with the hardware API, and it would get adopted as a standard. The story goes that the consumer app we got was just a bonus that arrived when someone in the marketing dept hounded the engineering team for sellable features, so someone extended the memory card manager GUI to also use the player for music and other media.
      Anyway, the actual gd sorcerers working on FF7 managed to lower the memory footprint low enough-which is a contributing factor to why we're STILL finding bugs in a 25 year old game-that they could just barely fit a custom player that used features from the hardware API to give it legs.
      It was such a big deal that they showcased it at the very beginning of the bombing mission. That moment the train crawls to a stop, there's a seamless transition between FMV and gameplay. That was the first time that had ever happened in a video game, and it was such an impressive engineering feat that that the devs lead with it.
      Most games, after that, used a variation of that technique until realistic, in-engine graphics were finally ready to take the stage. But, prior to that, FF7 pioneered and used that tech like an artist's brush all over the game.

Hit it hard with thundaga a few times-Aerith's double cast can make this a lot easier-to put him into a pressured state, then que up every stagger building thing you've got between Cloud & Tifa. Do it one more time, just Cloud should be enough this time, because you're about to need Tifa. Have her fully charged and swap to her to rack up the damage % from triangle supers. Then thwack em with thundaga and the Hardedge ability (if you can get enough ATB during the smackdown When you get the countdown, you can stagger him out of it like that if you time it, OR you can use shell-or whatever it's called in this game-you know, protect for magic. That, carbuncle, or a few other things are the only way megaflare won't wipe you. Revival earrings are also an option, since you're in hard mode now and money has become somewhat meaningless.
      Just.. don't forget that thundaga whammy on the last battle in the Top Secrets sequence...

    Sergeant from Final Fantasy II can be a bit of a wake up call boss, it sets the standard about Final Fantasy II bosses boasting high defenses and strong physical attacks.

    I think the first boss that caught me off guard was the the fishman boss from DQ8 I was level 9 and was flying through all the enemies to farm gear and stuff and the guy was still able to land a 30 hit on me but thankfully i had healing magic so i was able to fight the boss hoping he'd die before me.

    I kind of feel the magus sisters shouldn't be included in this. Even considering the first boss of the expansion rather than the game as a whole, the magus sisters are technically the third boss in that dungeon. Traditionally you could consider the bosses beforehand as sub bosses but the game doesn't make a distinction that the bosses before the last one in a dungeon are lesser outside of gameplay mechanics.

    Not sure I agree with all this Guard Scorpion fandom, it did exactly what the FFIV Mist Dragon and FFVI Whelk did. Periodically entering a phase where attacking them resulted in a heavy counter attack. By the time I played FFVII this was already an old mechanic that I was seeing for my 3rd time in a row.

    the magus sisters in FF14 are particularly noteworthy because the dungeon is level 81. a huge majority of players have been playing 80 levels worth of dungeons and boss fights at this point, so seeing orange AOE indicators on the ground is nothing special at all. the problem is just how many indicators are thrown all over the everywhere from the sisters, its just a bit silly for a dungeon boss!
    this is still very much some of the easiest things to do in the game, but the sisters arent going easy on the rookies.
