BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 17th year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.
Tremendous episode. What a terrific couple. They have been through so much and it looks like they have come out the other end better and stronger and happier. I wish nothing but the best for them all. These builds always bring a tear to my eye, watching families struggle, for better or sometimes for worse. But the vision they work toward is an enviable goal, which many of us will never experience.
We must have been watching a different episode. Toby bullied his thoughts and ideas all over this project. Guilt tripping his wife just because he had leukemia, she even said so essentially.
They didn't agree once throughout the whole thing. The house is BIG, yet some of the rooms are pokey and laid out awkwardly. Nothing about this episode or build was warm or loving
I watch this show from siberia. I amaze how beautiful English architecture is. You anglo-saxons know how to build cities. Amazing
What a lovely outcome, I also cried at the end, really so well done, you bring joy to me and what a lovely wife you are blessed with. Thank you for sharing and seriously, we done!
Love the show, always
Kevin, you have the most absolute way to speak building, in ways I envy.
Stunning couple... stunning home, fantastic vision , blissful.
Thank you , absolute joy❤
A very.moving episode. I hope they got through Covid safely in that beautiful rural refuge.
well done Toby, you have a blessed wife. The house is amazing .
🤓 …hats off to the Builder and his Crew who made sure this learning curve was a healthy hiccup for everyone who passed on his knowledge, while I like the house and thoroughly enjoyed watching this build, I do not understand the need for such big rooms 🤓
Toby is a wonderfully obsessive artist and visionary…who knows what he wants, and he did an extraordinary job. I doubt Margot has ever lived with an artist before. I would have loved her to have more faith in her husband’s vision. As they say, worry is the worse use of imagination!
Margot? Don't you mean Libby? And isn't Libby an actor which puts her firmly in the realm of artist?
You always give us lovely projects .🎉
Fantastic project, fantastic couple!
I was very sceptical but i like this interior designs style. It seemd costly for a lot of DIY but i guess it does have the extra loft and work studio. I applaud him for his vision. Hope it’s durable and well isolated ect.
Muy buenos video, seria muy interesante si se pudieran ver subtitulados, no da esa opcion
Super Home🎉
Almost 4 times the money of the somewhat similar (large, U-shaped, steel framed) "Hull"house of the previous episode. Odd...Great house though and great story of holding on to a vision despite the world's skepticism and being proven right in the end.
He is reckless. He gives no consideration for anyone but himself. He will not compromise in any way with his wife...and why she has not divorced him and disappeared is a mystery.
¿Podrían activar los subtitulos para los que los vemos de otro país?.Slds
Knight this man, Kevin.... I ask that you get Knighted... oh you do need to be ❤
I don't think Kevin likes it any more than I do....
Way Cool😎
Awesome show and people as always. However, the more times I see the strain it takes on people to do the work themselves to save money, is there really no volunteer workforce in this country? Payment in food and tea/drinks and work experience perhaps? I would definitely volunteer to help out on a project like this.
Volunteers don't have the skills or often the care factor to do the job well. And they also need constant supervision, which can be so much more draining.
If you are happy with "good enough" and a finished product that may need maintenance sooner, then go for it with the almost free help.
From experience, I don't advise it unless you have no other options.
@@ygjoeytran I was thinking even if it's something as simple as clearing up rubbish on the job site. Doesn't have to be the actual building of the place. Just something to help out for a few hours at least?
I have it...house by Ikea.
agreed
the site supervisor didn’t have the heart to tell Toby off..
I understand why these kinds of projects make such good television programs, but this house is stupid large for a small family, with unneeded and redundant spaces. At least one of the buildings could have been left out entirely.
Toby had the vision, we don't know the exact drivers but can only commend him for seeing it through. He now has a studio, a full guest wing and space for himself and his family. He can produce music, have bands out to stay/record, can charge an arm and a leg for that sort of thing and not have to leave the house. Good on him I say 🎨🌈😎
Lovely, spacious, voluminous spaces. Gorgeous and light. Imagination made real. I appreciate actualisers.
I thought the same, very moving life story. I really dont like the building, inspired as i imagine by a long hospital corridor. I like the light foundations, tree, wood etc. But its way too long/big for 3ppl. Who wants to airbnb a part of sbd house? Its not london. My favourite Host was way too soft on them
Are you looking at a different house? The rooms are not large at all.
@@kszaczyszcz What a stupid comment. Airbnbs attached to people's homes exist all over the world. I have just rented one in France and it was great.
I seem to be one of few not finding the house one bit impressive. Ugly on the outside and crazy expensive for what you get. Half the cost would still have been way too high. I desperately want to drive by their house and color all those silver knobs on the outside. Looks absolutely horrible. And no garage for that kind of money?
agreed. I surprised so many comments are positive.
He loves to say we but does a lot of me..
Never understood why people living in a country known for getting a lot of rain dont incorporate garages into their house designs, an £800,000 house should have at least a 2 car garage.
I chuckled when they talked about the winter weather and how it was so cold at -6, here in Canada they but up houses in -20's.
Because garages are ugly and so are cars. The point of the house is to look at that beautiful tree from every angle. Brits complaining about the weather is just their identity, like canadians being friendly XD
As a Welshman, I grew up in Wales. I moved to Japan 33 years ago and the first few winters here I felt were warm, despite the temperatures being well below what I experienced in Wales. I can remember going night skiing and whereas everyone else were turning their heaters on in their cars after skiing, I turned on the air conditioning to cool down. Despite having rested after skiing and changed. It was simply a different kind of cold. Much drier (despite the snow) whereas I was used to very damp, high humidity winters. Banging on about how Canadians work in -20C isn't a real comparison as to how one's body feels. Before you tell me that Japan is warm, there are plenty of places in Japan that in mid-winter drop to -20C with a few places even lower. My particular area, does not do so, but the winters are so dry we need to use humidifiers. Unthinkable in Wales.
@@andrewjones-productionsi agree. Im from the north of England where 2 degrees can chill you to the bone because of the damp. Now living in Sweden where I wear just a t shirt outdoors when shoveling snow at -8 degrees. It’s all about humidity.
Why would they mount the steel to concrete at ground level? Couldn't they have raised the concrete pillars 60cm to avoid the steel sitting in water half of the time? I imagine those beams will look really rough in 30 years.
Im surprised so many like this build.
Toby bullied his thoughts and idea's all over this project. He full on guilt tripped his wife just because he jad leukemia, she even essentially said that. When she asked questiond or had concerns, he basically had a face like thunder.
The house has no warmth, and there was no joy when it was being built.
A big weirdly laid out house with so many small awkwardly laid out rooms.
That rain will come at angles under that walk way between the different wings. A major slipping accident waiting to happen.
At the end Toby talks about his health and having a home for his family if anything should happen etc etc. Wjere were those thoughts when he skipped 4 months of follow ups??
im surprised too! Its one of the ugliest builds i've seen. And for that much money too. Poor libby.
Too large and a bit monotonous and not much cost effective per square meter, perhaps.
If only they went for half as much space and used some nice high quality materials. It would have been a 100 times nicer looking. Still it looks better than I was expecting.
That building is far too large for such a small family. 50% of the size would have resulted in 100% better materials...and it ends up being an expensive, expansive Anderson shelter.
You've forgotten to add one very important sentence to your comment which is..."in my opinion"!
And I'd say:
Everyone to their own!
@@agassi071his stating it so clearly his opinion. You say each to their own, so let him have his opinion lol
Awful. A hodgepodge of outback buildings. I have never not liked a design on this program. First time for everything. Lovely couple.
370 m2 - so stupid!!!! How many m2 does a family need ??? Dont you know anything about climate and enviroment???
Mmm sounds like a refuge when the bugs bite. Hence bigger than usual. Fyi. 😊
The wife is negative and not supportive during the built.
The wife has concerns and questions, that's not being negative. She is helping fund this project so why must she keep quiet? He bullied her throughout this entire show
@@nickyshaw7677 wow I didn't know u can decipher a lot about the husband from that 50min show- beig bullied and all. What a choice of vocab to use.
For me, I didn't see the "bullied" part. What I saw is a differing opinions between 2 individuals.
And I didn't say in my comment that the wife should keep quiet did I? Being negative , the wife could construct her sentence better to be understood and offer solution , not just comment 'oh the ceiling is too high' for example. Offer solution, tell the builder , architect what id the preferred height fir example.
I can deduce that u are all about women\ wife empowerment- from that short comment u made.
I ll stand by my choice of words for the wife - negative and not supportive. You stand by your own choice of words dear, as long as u dont misinterpreted my earlier comments .
@Khairul-wg1km Firstly, I'm not your dear. Clearly, you deciphered your own opinions in 50 minutes, just like I did. You also assume I'm all about women empowerment, because in my eyes he was clearly bullying his thoughts and ideas. Clearly you assume a lot lol. The husband could have also used his words better instead of shutting her down immediately. It goes both ways
@@nickyshaw7677 well Nicky , what would you expect from your OWN choice of words like "bullied" , and of course I will counter your reply with women empowerment. You did decipher a lot based on what I initially said and what the show portrayed. Clearly in the show It didnt portrayed the husband as a bully.
Well your above reply is a better descriptive sentence - " like he shut her down immediately ". That is more accurate and what is shown from the show.
@@nickyshaw7677 I agree Nicky. He made almost zero space for her input and had "a face like thunder" (to borrow another commenter's phrase) every time she tried to raise her concerns. I'd hate to be building a family with such a difficult personality in the partner. Doesn't help that it was her inheritance that was used and his ideas were...less than great...actually quite an ugly house for a lot of money.
SUPER!!!!!!!!
wish his wife treated him as the man he is, respect is needed, you can see how she has worn him down with her need to be more than him,,,, disgusting
Dude what are you talking about. She's been with him through thick and thin and allowed him to live out his dream and risk their finances for his vision, which clearly he didn't allow her to be a part of, it was just him him him.
@@Frontbumlover69 Yes! Seems whstever she suggested, he was just 'no'
Are you looking for a fight or are you just stupid? She's supported him throughout everything. All he is done is bully her during the entire build. She also mentioned inheritance as being part of what paid for the build. Guarantee it was hers.
This is hilarious how different all our opinions are! I'm shocked that some see her as the problem. I see it opposite. She has had to suffer through his selfish approach that resulted in quite an ugly house that cost a lot. Honestly none of us should be judging these people, we dont actually know, the show was only 50 minutes. But I sure got the sense that he made no room for her in the decision making process. It was all about him and his dream...and her inheritance. Didn't see him hug her once even as she was crying. Poor woman.
