You'd think, but humans don't exactly work like that. In my experience doing contract work for almost a decade, if you "fix" something but the problem comes back, it leaves a bad taste in the customer's mouth, and they are GOING to call someone else, because in their mind you didn't fix anything. If you fix the problem AND find a way to stop it ever happening again, then you make the customer happy and they trust your skills/knowledge. Then when they need work done somewhere else they think of you. They trust you, and want that same service with their current issue. My mileage: guys who do shitty work soon find themselves out of work, while guys like this have too much.
a number of people might go “oh well I wanted to get a new one anyway”.. actually I’m in that process, I did “repair” one by watchinh youtubes like this one.. but honestly want to get a new one - this helps to transition to that mindset.. the solution with this one tho would be to unplug it / drain it and would work again :/ So turn it off and on

We just got rid of ours after numerous issues. Got a Whirlpool. We also have had a lot of problems with the Samsung washer and dryer in the house when my mom bought it. I would not buy any Samsung appliances.
I have a Kenmore that does this all the time. Which causes it to stop making my ice. I will be doing this tomorrow. I am sick of melting the drain hole just for it to freeze back up. Thank you very very much!!
They literally have, that's what he attached it to. It's not planned obsolescence, obviously it's a rare fault and the normal heating element is enough

Apparently that is not enough, but it is not like they could’ve seen that by just testing it for a week or two. This type of fridge shouldn’t freeze over in just a night, and the fact that they have a puddle on the floor every day tells me they have the fridge open a lot and long. Maybe even put in warm meals with a lot of moisture coming off. This shouldn’t happen normally.

As a tech I also recommend pulling out the refrigerator and opening compressor compartment to check drain tube… they tend to close due to gunk build up causing back up. So heat won’t necessarily fix problem.
My samsung had a one way rubber valve at the bottom of the drain tubes where the clog started. They were rock hard and stuck closed. They literally crumbled when i touched them. Thats the root cause of these drain issues i think at least most of them. And its easy to check because they are right on the back.

Sometimes it will have a pan where it will evaporate from, sometimes an heater element in it, sometimes the compressor discharge will pass through it to aid evaporation. Sometimes it has a plastic pan that goes over the compressor for the heat from the compressor shell to evaporate it. Hope that helps.
There's a pan that is under the fridge that holds the water. The special thing about this pan is that it is thermally connected to the compressor so it is heated by waste compressor heat. The water evaporates out of the pan. No emptying required

I did this same thing a number of years ago when my fridge kept freezing over. I also had to change the element but I didn't have one of the specialty tools they required so it went in all mongy 🤣 Stopped overfreezing though.
It's called galvanic corrosion. I'm presuming the heating element is made of stainless steel - which apparently is fine to use with copper as they are close in reactivity.
I would have thought it was secondary route for the hot end of the refrigeration loop, but I guess it's cheaper and easier to just whack an ordinary heating element in there.

That Samsung normally comes with the freezer drainhole plugged from the factory. The plastic punch-out isn't punched out. I assume the factory checklist only says to punch out 'drainhole', and does not specify that there are two..
excellent advice, although you forgot one thing... after melting all the ice, it's now time to remove the drainage tray from on top of the condenser motor at the back and tip it away other wise you'll just get the water leaking from behind and not notice, plus the room gonna get real humid! oh and mould, that water pooling gonna get real mouldy...
That happened to me. My co-workers husband fixed appliances. He did the copper wire trick. This happened when the refrigerator was about 8 years old. It just died at 29 years old. The refrigerator compressor went. Luckily, the freezer still worked and basically tossed expired food and didn't lose good food. I didn't replace the refrigerator until it died because i probably saved myself from buying 2 refrigerators ygat died while the old one worked.
That was Samsungs original intention mate but due to poor design, its not efficient enough to keep ice away from the drain. This is actually what Samsung recommend to their engineers to resolve this issue

@@wow1371 I have as well as a frost-free fridge/freezer, I have a small bar fridge and that isn't frost-free, and so it gradually builds up ice, and one day I will have to defrost it.
@@wow1371it's not user error. This happens naturally when you open the freezer door. The reason this happens is because the drain tube membrane is clogged. It needs to be taken out and cleaned under the tap with soap. And then you need to straighten the metal piece out. That's it.
Ok, so I looked into this and there are some heating elements with copper shells. Given the color tho I reckon this isn't the case. Most heating elements shells are steel and aluminum wire would be a much better choice then

yup... we got a small chest freezer and the normal standup fridge freezer, we just empty either one out(after letting the food run down in one of them) turnn the fridge off and open the door and let it defrost itself... usually better when it warm as it defrosts quicker.. but you don't need to defrost that often nowadays..
Noone ever taught me to unscrew the back of my appliances. In fact, I was taught the opposite. If you're referring to the ice on the bottom at the start - that's what constantly forms when this issue is occurring. As in, you defrost it... it just starts again. Source: two leaking Samsung fridges in a row. Just never could afford a tech so just defrost the inside every fucking 3 or so weeks. Stoked to learn I can do this though.
this is a frost free freezer, it isn't meant to freeze up. But ice slowly formed in the drain until it wouldn't drain, then a puddle forms and freezes.
I've got the same Wera VDE screwdrivers, and Knipex Diagonal Cutters. I'm pretty much a professional now. At least, I feel like one when I use them. Such high quality tools always get me lol. "Buy once cry once"
That's really good I'm not rich enough and my kitchen's not big enough for American style fridge but sometimes that little bit on my normal fridge freezer freezes up and I sometimes turn it off to do that but now I know you can do it with hot water from the kettle I'm gonna try that once in a while thank you again
It looks like there was a metal heat transfer part already installed, but its bent. It also seems like the heating element is too cold on the lowest rung with that metal piece, requiring the techs modification with the copper wire on the second rung. Which, i would assume is still hot enough.
Fair fucks to any technician who prevents the problem after fixing it, you're an honest man (especially for showing people how to fix it at home).
If they fix something, I say thank you and pay them. If they stop the problem from coming back, I'll trust them for all my future jobs.

Be sure to use hot water and not a heat gun as you run the chance of melting the plastic on the back on the unit.

If you're referring to the ice on the bottom at the start - that's what constantly forms when this issue is occurring. As in, you defrost it... it just starts again. Source: two leaking Samsung fridges in a row. Just never could afford a tech so just defrost the inside every fucking 3 or so weeks.

this is a frost free freezer, it isn't meant to freeze up. But ice slowly formed in the drain until it wouldn't drain, then a puddle forms and freezes.
I imagine this is a "frost-free" freezer, that probably claims to not need defrosting.
I've got the same Wera VDE screwdrivers, and Knipex Diagonal Cutters. I'm pretty much a professional now. At least, I feel like one when I use them. Such high quality tools always get me lol. "Buy once cry once"

it looks like it used to have a wire or maybe that tab of metal was longer but it corroded or fell off or something.

Looks to be the back of the fridge, and it drips to the front?
It's draining to an evaporation tray, every fridge has one at the back, it may be behind a cover but it's there

That's really good I'm not rich enough and my kitchen's not big enough for American style fridge but sometimes that little bit on my normal fridge freezer freezes up and I sometimes turn it off to do that but now I know you can do it with hot water from the kettle I'm gonna try that once in a while thank you again

It looks like there was a metal heat transfer part already installed, but its bent. It also seems like the heating element is too cold on the lowest rung with that metal piece, requiring the techs modification with the copper wire on the second rung. Which, i would assume is still hot enough.
Never ever use a screwdriver or hard implement to clear a drain bung! A plastic tool or preferably compressed air is the correct solution!
