    Tommy's story is similar to mine, but mine was a bit different when I was in basic training 2013. I was the platoon guide (meaning I was in charge of my platoon that consisted of 30 - 40 people) with the radio and my battle buddy (battle buddy in basic training means you two ALWAYS have to stick together and go wherever together no matter what). During the night I remember seeing someone moving in the tree line roughly 25 - 30 meters. I radioed up to the other platoons of movement and those who were sleeping at to wake up. Low and behold it was a guy from a different platoon taking a piss in the middle of the night without his battle buddy walking towards my way (He was lost in the dark). Next thing I hear are simulated mortars going off and everything went into chaos. After the AAR (after action report) of what happened and how we reacted and etc. One of my drill sergeants came up to me whispered, "They're in the trees huh private?" Best laugh I had while in the army.

      Really far tangent, but when I was in college at Boston U, I always got a chill whenever I saw the nuclear shelter signs that are still on the buildings like our College of Arts and Sciences building from the Cold War era. You just can't quite imagine the fear and hysteria that people lived with during that time and WWII that made things like that be or at least feel absolutely necessary to have, like sirens.

      i also am, however it's only because in my country they test sirens every first wednesday of every month. This is because in 2002 when the sirens were needed because of massive floods, they were untested and didn't work. So now they make sure the sirens are always ready
      However it's always funny seeing tourists react when they don't know, like "did a war break out wtf"

    I will make a disclaimer I do not think the USA will ever be under occupation because of their isolated geographical position and the obsession with their imperial level army
    But I think we should talk about the idea of a civilian with weapons = the best defense against an invasion, I would say it's a bit idiotic both in WWII and now, especially now, anyone who opposes with guns will be considered combatants
    , and if a large part of the population is considered combatants then there is no reason not to exterminate the entire population (from the perspective of the soldiers they must eliminate the opposition before the opposition eliminates them, which will give them a reason to kill people indiscriminately) from as far away as possible without endangering your troops (naval bombardment, neurotoxic gas, artillery, mass bombardment) and today it's even more horrible, we have missiles that can hit targets with precision from hundreds of kilometers, a single helicopter with optical / thermal equipment can certainly exterminate an entire militia battalion if from about 6 clicks away, if no anti-air is present (SAM's / portable AA Launchers) and not to mention the fragmentation-air-burst 30mm rounds.

      you can already witness this in history, it's something the Chinese employed against the Japanese which in turn made them really ramp up their war crimes count

    • @christianmorales8978

      Why do you think the Vietcong won the Vietnam War? It was because the civilian population was armed on mass and they recruited just about anyone they could. Ofc if this civilian population was out in the open, they would’ve made easy targets and some certainly were for the US military and as a result a large amount of civilians died (also combined with the intentional war crimes of the US and South Vietnamese military). The thing is they hid themselves and used every opportunity to destroy the American and south Vietnamese army. This combined with Soviet intelligence on US operations won the Vietcong the war. Now let’s look at the US. There’s mountains, wilderness, cities, basically almost endless places to hide people and with a highly armed civilian population, with intelligence organizations like the CIA, anyone who attacks America would likely suffer a defeat greater than a thousand Vietnams to America (ignoring the technological and nuclear advantage). Having an armed civilian population offers a great advantage in the situation of war.

    • @Darth_Conans
      @Darth_Conans 2 года назад +7

      A precision-guided missile can't occupy a city. And beginning some kind of extermination campaign against a populace is a sure-fire way to get MORE people joining a resistance movement, since at that point there's no reason to not take up arms if you're a target anyway.

    • @zettour.
      @zettour. 2 года назад +4

      @@christianmorales8978 This doesn't really properly explain the terror of fighting an armed civilian populace. It's already a disadvantage to fight on the enemy's home turf since they can choose to take the initiative at anytime whereas the invaders have to constantly be aware of when to attack or when to retreat as to not be surrounded or cut off from their supply line.
      Now, you compound that by adding pretty much inexhaustible manpower as well as turning pretty much every inch of land hostile. If you just had to fight an organized military, your targets are going to be major cities, military installations, etc. But against a civilian uprising, every house, barn, shed, or forest is now an enemy stronghold. You can be attacked whenever and however. There is no longer any rest for your army and there is no way to predict enemy movements. You'd have to expend much more manpower to securing your frontlines as well as to counter insurgency operations since civilian insurgents could just pop up from your rear at any time and jeopardize the entire invasion.
      You brought up the role of intelligence organizations, but no entity can gather more intelligence than country's worth of people. While the KGB knew the big operations or key locations in the U.S. military, the Vietcong would be aware of the entirety of the U.S. military's. If properly harnessed by military officers and liaisons, you can have eyes and ears everywhere, which is what insurgency groups like the Taliban are known for. There's also obviously the diplomatic side of things. It'll be pretty difficult to prove that all civilians are enemy combatants during the war and no country would look good committing war crimes.

      If you want a good investment, invest in U-boats. Germany spent 2.7 billion on U-boats and the Allies had to spend ten times that to counter them while losing 14 million tons of supplies.
      And that's just in WW2. WW1 U-boats numbered only a third of their 1.1k cohort in WW2 and were able to achieve the same result with the Allies breaking their wallets to fund counter U-boat operations as well as losing 11 million tons of Allied cargo. A U-boat by the name of Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere sank 189 merchant vessels alone in WW1.
