Congrats bro, I am so stressed up learning about the sleep waves and scoring I am a sleep tech for 6 months and still struggling with the events and scoring the study and I am studying for the RPSGT, man it is just too much for one person 🤣

Haha it is a lot and overwhelming while you’re studying all the patterns whether it’s for EEG or sleep. Just remember you don’t need to know everything, just enough to pass the test!

Loved the video. The marking and measuring is what I’m having trouble with. Do you have another video like this that’s a little slower and actually shows you parting the hair. I’m having trouble manipulating the hair

I can make a video in the future showing how I make the marks with hair. A lot of the time you can just draw through the hair onto the scalp. It just takes more practice & I think you’ll be fine!

I have 4 months left in my own course , its really nice to see and relate to someone else starting out. Is there anyway you can upload a video of measuring with the head lying down- in sleeping position.? For me measurements are way harder with the patient lying down, it's like I'm fighting gravity lol

Hey Christopher, it’s great to connect with another EEG tech! You’re right, it’s different when doing a real patient because they’re lying down. I suggest practice making good towel rolls to prop the head up to easily reach the occipital electrodes. It’s best to practice on real people, so maybe I can get a volunteer that I can measure on a video. Thanks for the idea!

Can you do an "inpatient" style video where you are measuring with the patient laying down and not being able to move their head on their own?

Good video idea, that would be a more realistic example! To set an inpatient up, I hold their head with one hand and replace their pillow with a towel roll to prop the back of their head up.

Hey there! So glad you have these RUclips videos! I’m at laboure college as well and just start my clinicals this week. I was wondering how long did it take you before you got fast at measuring? Takes me about 30 min with lasting the hair on a mannequin head. I measure my first patient on Monday and am super nervous 😬

I used my phone as a timer and purposely tried to measure as fast as possible. You’ll be able to track your progress and see yourself get faster. That way you’ll be confident enough to be great with your first patient!

@@jaredbeckwith thanks for the reply! I also had one more question. Do you round to get a whole number when you measure? Sometimes I get 35.5cm or 36.6cm and then having to do the math so fast kind of gets to me 😣

I always round up to the nearest centimeter to make the math doable in my head. You’ll also find most people’s heads are similar sizes after enough measuring.

I have no medical experience but am very tech savvy and am fascinated with the brain so I feel like this can be something I could get into. Are there companies that have on-the-job training or their own facilities? Even unpaid training is fine

I’ve seen as low as $18/hour for people with no experience, up to like $28/hour if doing night shift. I can definitely help train you to be a great tech (:

Yes I know a few sleep techs that have made the transfer over to doing EEGs on epilepsy patients. Sleep techs are way more knowledge than a person leaning EEGs from scratch!

Thanks for reaching out Stacy! Before taking the board exam I would go to the ABRET website and do their “ASAP exam prep” questions. They give like 500 practice questions and will give you an idea if you’re ready to take the exam. Most hospitals will reimburse you the $700 to take the exam if you work there after school. There’s no rush to take the exam, just wait until you’re ready (:

Hey I don’t think it’s possible to work full time during EEG college. Being at the hospital 2 days a week and coursework is too overwhelming if you add a full time job on top of that. Even working part-time would be difficult but more doable.

Hey Jared what's your advice for someone looking to get a job as an EEG tech without getting certified or taking a 6 month-1 year training course? I'm looking to do it temporarily so I can get some exposure since I am interested in potentially going into sleep medicine as a physician assistant. I'd want to do the job for roughly 6 months and then probably start PA school. Any potential difficulties/challenges you see with this and any tips to overcome them if they do present themselves? Thanks! I'm in Los Angeles, CA for your reference.

If you only have 6 months and no prior training, I don’t think you’ll be able to get a job. My advice would be to contact local sleep labs or EEG labs and ask to shadow them for a short time. It will take work to get through to these department managers, but the experience will be worth it.
Another option if you need money would be to become a sleep tech or EEG tech part-time over the next few years while taking part-time PA classes. A sleep lab might be more interested in spending time training you if you’re going to work at least a year while doing school.

@@jaredbeckwith Hey Jared, I very much appreciate your steadfast response. Unfortunately, that’s not practical for me to do that since once you’re in PA school, you have to commit to it full-time. I actually did shadow a polysomnographic technologist for one or two nights to see what the job would be like. You don’t think there’s anywhere that would be willing to train me on the job? I have to see if I can find a place that is OK with me working temporarily.

It’s possible you could find some place that would train you on the job. Just keep in mind you’ll probably need to ask a lot of places.

I still measure every time except when it’s not possible like a crying child. The reason for precise measurements is because if the electrodes are too close or too far it changes how the EEG looks.

During college you work at a clinical site hospital and they usually give you a job offer at the end. I had three job offers after finishing school. EEG tech is a relatively unknown job so you’ll be in high demand with low competition.

ok wait, you dont open the hair , but how can you see where the mark goes. My teacher says to use hair clips. do you have another video showing what your doing exactly :-)

When first starting out you can use hair clips to practice before doing real patients. I just mark it through the hair, and part it with my hands later when looking for my marks. With lots of practice you’ll have every spot memorized and won’t need hair clips!

I do need a little help with 10 20. When I do the 10% and 20%, my pz and oz be off a little. I might have a little anxiety because I want that last measurement to be perfect. What can I do to fix that?

I think pz matters more than oz since there’s no electrode that goes there. When crossing fz, cz, and pz make sure it lines up with the nose going in a straight line. Most important thing with the midline is to double check that they’re in a straight line and an equal distance apart. It’s impossible to have a perfect placement down to the centimeter so no need to be anxious. Just make sure you’re less than 5 centimeters off on each one.

My local CC offers a 2 year program and is partnered with a UNI hospital for clinical but I saw that yours is only a 1 year program. What would be the better option?

I’d try to do a one year online college program if they can set you up with a local hospital. That way you’ll pay for one less year of college, and be making money after the first year. If the online colleges can’t set you up with a local hospital, I think the 2 year CC option is still great!
