Funnily enough my husband and I were in the Harry Potter shop in London's Kings Cross station just last week and they had convertible mittens for sale. I told my husband that I had a pair when I was kid and of course he then asked me if I could knit him a pair. You have just saved me from going down an internet rabbit hole looking for a pattern! Thank you, thank you! 😘😘
This video came at the right time , as this is the point in the pattern where I did not understand the written instructions. You just saved me a trip to my LYS. Thank you 😊
Oh my! Thank you for this video. I ahve a pattern to make convertable mittens but could not figure it out! This technique makes it much easier for me to understand! Again thank you so much!!
I was working on a standard pair of mittens for my husband when he asked me if it was possible to make convertible mitts. Here you are with the absolute BEST tutorial on RUclips for convertible mitts. Thank you for sharing these easy to follow instructions. I can’t wait to go to the fiber festival near me next week to shop for some special yarn for my hubby’s special mitts. Love your content. Keep doing what you do! ❤
I forgot to mention that the standard mittens I was knitting were The World’s Simplest Mittens. Now I get to knit a familiar pattern with your modifications. How perfect! Thank you.
Thanks for this! I have a pair of gloves that are a bit thin but really soft and I didn't know what do to with them. Now I'll just make them convertible!
Thank you so much, Caleb! My convertible mittens (not self-knit) have worn out, and I wanted a new pair. I'm definitely going to try this and knit my own.
Oh Caleb! Thanks for this! Perfect for our below zero temps right now. I’m finding it necessary to double up a glove and a mitt to keep my fingers from freezing.
@@DrowninginYarn Right on. I have thin driving gloves with grips on the palm and phone friendly finger tips that I’ve been using with a mitt. Can’t wait to cast yours on. Brilliant!
Fairly new knitter here. I was a tad intimidated at the thought of this modification but it came out great. My first glove, I should have tried it on before I started decreasing because it’s just a hair to short but the right handed glove is great. Thanks for the tutorial
Thank you very much!! I’ve been wanting to make a mitten like this, but haven’t found a pattern I like. I appreciate you showing us your nice trick! Thanks again…I think I’ll pull out some yarn and cast on today 😄
@@DrowninginYarn At first after you started doing the second ribbing before blending it together to work in the round, I was like- huhh?? 😳😆 Greetings from NYC!! 😁🗽💖💐🌹
Thank you for making this video! I've been wanting to make a pair of convertible mitts, but I hate using patterns (for various reasons that are too many to list. So I inevitably just make my own patterns) and this flip top part was the one part I've been puzzling over, on how to attach it easily and pleasingly. So thank you!💜
Thanks for the tips! Got the pattern, and working on a pair with a cable pattern to match a cowl I recently completed. Trying to figure out how to continue the cable into the “finger flaps”. I love your videos, your editing is great to keep things rolllllin.
My tip would be to add a little more to rye hand than you would think so the flap overlaps. I like convertible mittens with less chunky yarn since ribbing is doubled on the fingers.
Interesting video! I wonder if adding a lifeline where you'll pick up later would make it easier to see later, if you use something thin like embroidery floss.
Perhaps if it's something you find you have trouble with... it's really quite easy though and I had no trouble even with the fuzzy yarn I was using. I only showed it on the swatch because it did not read well on camera on the mittens I was making.
This is a brilliant and very timely video as I have been wondering how to make regular mittens into convertible ones. Makes me wonder if the thumb could also be worked convertible in the same way?
I would love to do something similar to this to a fingerless mitten pattern that I love (but I loathe fingerless mittens!) - wish I felt confident enough in my own math to try it!
Love it! But curious, can you do a longtail cast-on BEFORE you pick up stitches & just join after picking up.....or when you knit them on??? So it's "stretchier"...
I’m not sure… I haven’t tried that. For these stitches, you won’t really need them to be stretchier. They have plenty of stretch and you won’t want the mitten top to stretch out over time.
@@DrowninginYarn Kewel!! Thanks .... I had a friend commission me to make 8 pair of fingerless mitts & I was thinking about that as an option on a couple & couldn't figure out how..... I really didn't think it would be that easy!! 😂
Love your tutorial! I've never made mittens (just a pair of hand warmers, tons of sweaters and a few hats and shawls) I definitely want to try this. I think convertible mittens are the best! Thank you! When are you doing to do a LIVE again?
Thank you! 😊 I'm not sure when we are going live again, but I've been thinking about it and we have plenty to show. So I'd guess probably sometime within the next few weeks :-)
I noticed that you were doing a twisted rib. I’ve always ktbl and purl regular, but it looked like you k and ptbl. Do you notice any difference between the two, or is it just personal preference? Also, I’ve got you in suuuuper slo-mo to figure out how you are doing that backwards loop co! Haha You do it so effortlessly. Thank you for sharing with us 😀
I think there must be another way to pick up stitches that doesn't leave the row of "dimples" where the flap connects, but I can't figure out what it is. I have some alpaca flap mittens that I assume were made in peru and the flap joins totally seamlessly and with no extra tension at the connection point. I'm hunting for that technique!
I know this was a year ago, but I’m trying to do it now. I am having trouble joining in the round because of how tight the stitches are. They don’t reach each other. I’m trying to use 16in circular needles. Please advise. Thanks

These will be perfect for my granddaughter. She is in marching band and needs fingers gloves but yet needs the mitten after she plays. Thanks Caleb.
You’re so welcome!
I did the exact same thing with the tin can mittens to make convertible mittens for a six year olds Xmas gift. Works great.
Oh awesome! I’m sure the mittens made for an awesome gift 💚

OMG I LOVE this! I need convertible mitts while walking my pups! Amazingly clear tutorial, THANK YOU CALEB!!
I have to wear them when walking to dogs as well! My hands would fall off if I didn’t 🤣 I’m so glad you liked the video 💚
Wow, wonderful adaptation. I love the Tin Can Knits patterns, I have bought several.
Thank you! They do have great patterns!
I’m a (very) beginner knitter but I find your videos so inspirational - beautiful work!👍
Thank you so much! That’s such a lovely compliment 🥰
I highly recommend The World's Simplest Mittens by Tin Can Knits as your first mitten pattern. It is very easy!
I use their mitt patterns all the time and will definitely use your mods - Thanks!!

Hi there thanks for the tip have you ever used Roxanna Richardson's method for picking up stitches in the middle of fabric?
thank you so much for this!! i wonder if this will be possible on double pointed needles too? or is it mainly for circulars?
I noticed that you were doing a twisted rib. I’ve always ktbl and purl regular, but it looked like you k and ptbl. Do you notice any difference between the two, or is it just personal preference? Is there a crochet version?
This pattern is only knit. I haven’t crocheted mittens before.
I can't find the pattern on her website?
The pattern is lined in the description of the video :-)
Why would you not put a little lifeline in the stitches you want to pick up when you decide you're about to knit the rib?
Why don't you use a life line instead of going back and pu stitches? Why don't you CO first and then knit the back stitches?
