I don't know if this is too late but he just used Select > Colour Range > Pick the colour of the window and just accordingly. Based on the selection, add a new layer using the background and apply a clipping mask. Then use any layer adjustment you like.
he used "color range" to select the color of the windows in the rendering. this made a selection and he saved the selection. his "glass" layer was a blank layer. ontop of his glass layer was a photo of the city. he copied the selection from that layer and pasted it into his glass layer, to make a window reflection of the city.
The building and the background are not separate. So the project doesn't stand out and can't be the highlight of the scene, but the skill is fine. I'm sorry that's just my opinion.
