    oh wow I've never contextualised contraception in that way - I've always thought it was unfair women have more pressure on them to be on something, but comparing years of artificial chemicals to 20 minutes (at best) of wearing a condom has really blown my mind

    I feel this sense of ‘mania’ and anxiety that you describe whenever there are significant changes or uncertainty in my life. It’s really affirming to hear you describe this too!

  • @sportybeth
    @sportybeth 3 года назад +23

    Hey, I have bipolar and what you are describing actually sounds pretty accurate. Mania usually lasts a week or more and the same for depression, it’s worth speaking to a doctor about it. That feeling that “it’s gone again” is definitely something I experience and my episodes are triggered by stress. I’m mostly episode free nowadays except extreme stress.
    Great video thanks for doing this, I’m coming off hormonal contraceptives this week, super helpful and interesting.

    I have just recently gone onto the merena coil, I completely relate to the strange feelings of guilt you speak about. When you get your coil fitted (this goes to anyone reading) I would highly recommend asking your partner to take the day off and come with you to your appointment. It also means they can be on hand to pamper you for a day and it made a massive difference to my experience. It's the least they can do!

      100% when I got my copper coil fitted my partner came with me, I felt fine walking out the doctor's but then within 5 minutes I was SO dizzy, like sat on the pavement couldn't stand up kinda dizzy. If my partner wasn't there to call a taxi to get us home I don't know what I would have done!

    I came off the pill in January and my biggest difference was mood and brain fog both lifting - I was actually frustrated that I’d basically been in a bad mood for 10 years because of the pill! I’m now using Natural Cycles and it’s working for me, but I’m married and I don’t drink so 100% get that it’s not for everyone.

      Also, natural cycles isn't birth control! Important to note because they advertise themselves like they are! They are a cycle tracker but not really reliable because everybody is different.

    Re: back acne - I hate it, its truly the worst! I'm sure you've tried a lot, but in case you haven't - the only thing that finally kicked it was a glycolic acid body gel that I put on my skin (and left it there) after I showered. It sounds intense, and if I did that on my face it would not be okay at all, but doing that daily over a month or so cleared it up massively.
    Also I feel you about resentment towards men. I swear my doctor must be sick of me coming in every two years, having the contraception chat, then never following up. I just can't face it. Why do we have the be the one to make all these decisions? Even when boyfriends offer to pay, are happy with whatever you pick, put no pressure on etc. women take on so much emotional labour about it, even if you don't end up doing anything .

    That's for being so open! I completely relate to the guilt-ugh. Even though my boyfriend is very respectful and kind and even though being on the pill wasn't necessarily horrific- I still feel like "it's my job" to go on the pill or get the coil etc. because otherwise I get PREGNANT and it's my body that changes and its my hormones that go haywire...
    That being said after a chat with my bf, we decided that going off the pill was better for me, I'm only one month off it but i do hope the side effects don't hit so hard

    Hi Lucy, I have endometriosis & can completely relate to almost all of those symptoms along with added chronic pain. I have been on birth control since I was around 15 & it infuriates me that men don't have to experience this huge chunk of unpredictability. I'm also currently on an injection called prostap which is causing me to fall into a 6 month 'menopausal state' it has taken some of the pain away, but the after effects are awful like 'hollow & creaky bones' & basically feeling like a 90 year old. It's a crazy crazy journey that we shouldn't have to go through & making videos to document that takes down stigma & that's so amazing. I hope the coil is good to you

    Hey ! Adding my own experience here :) I was on the pill for many years because of my acne (I used to take the "Diane 35" which later got banned lol): those pills were very heavily dosed with hormones... I had very serious acne and wanted to do the Accutane treatment but because of the side effect this may entail, I didn't want to be both on the pill and the treatment at the same time... So I went off and went for a 5 years copper foil. I am a lucky woman and never gets much side effect, but I noticed this: once I stopped the pill, I lost quite some weight ! I don't really track this but many people around me commented on it and some clothing became a bit more roomy. For the copper IUD, I don't get much side effect except that I lose more blood during my period (but nothing crazy, it remains manageable) and it is a bit more painful but again, nothing scary as I had heard before ! There you go, thought I would comment cause I have a very good experience on the copper IUD and you don't hear about them much haha

I will say though that do not feel any kind of shame if you wanna pack it in and stop after a few months if you find it unbearable. Some women experience hellish cramps with it in and while mostly my cramps aren't too dissimilar from what I used to experience but every now and again there's this one cramp out of nowhere that honestly stops me breathing and it's almost like the pain outlines the shape of the coil haha. Horrible but luckily rare for me.

    As a person with bipolar, my symptoms do get worse when I have a hormone imbalance, and many times before diagnosing it they'll check your hormones because the symptoms can be very similar to those of bipolar disorder, so it's completely possible you felt "manic". I wasn't that lucky though, I'm stuck with it lol.

  • @TinkaLaura
    @TinkaLaura 3 года назад +1

    Regarding you gut struggles as well as your mental health, maybe MCAD/ MCAS is something you might want to look into. I have recently been diagnosed with it and apparently it is very underdiagnosed because many doctors don't link the various symptoms together and look at them as separate issues. And although the treatment is a total pain in the bum, it feels so good to finally have some clarity about all the nasty things that have been going on with my body as well as my mind for most of my life.

    I also came off the pill about a year ago now (lockdown in NZ for 7 weeks meant I could get away with the acne flare up and not be as bothered haha) at 25 and have had similar experiences. When I was 19 I also tried coming off it but had the worst acne I've ever had in my life and immediately went back on 6 months later because it really affected my confidence. This time around the acne still flared but no where near as bad - I think this could be because I basically don't eat dairy now other than the occasional chocolate. I only really get acne now around my period. Period only lasts about 3 days, is still pretty inconsistent for me - it can be anywhere from 25-35 days between each cycle. Definitely get bloating the day before.
    I found that I'm hairy-er which is slightly annoying. Also like you mentioned in your previous update, I feel like my mood swings aren't as sudden or 'strong', but I can last longer in my down days even though I have them less frequently. Experiencing a TONNE more hair-loss also, but that would also be because I get my hair bleached now.
    Overall getting off the pill has been a massive blessing in disguise though. I never knew how bad the side-effects actually affected me until I stopped taking it and it was out of my system. I was on the pill from 14 years old (for acne) until I was 25. I didn't even know my body at that point and was still going through puberty so kind of just assumed that what I felt and how I acted was normal.

And I feel resentment towards the men who particularly have an issue with wearing a condom, and voice that over and over, even though it must be such a slight discomfort compared to getting a copper coil or taking a pill for YEARS
    Edit: I also used to feel guilty every day that I put off getting a copper coil, because I never wanted to take the pill, and my boyfriend at the time would periodically bring up how he didn't want to continue wearing condoms 🙄
    (I'm with an angel now. He's never even tried to weigh in on the kinds of decisions I make about my own body. Which should be the norm, and he agrees)

    I came off the pill and decided to get the five year copper coil too! I loved it for the first year - but then I started getting a lot of UTI’s and my theory was it could be to do with the coil. I had it removed after a year and the UTI’s stopped 🤷🏼‍♀️ everyone’s different, but thought I’d let you know 🙂

    Hi Lucy. I'm 2 weeks off the pill after taking it for the last 15 years so this video was very enlightening! Just wondering if you've thought about using an app such as natural cycles? As an alternative to the copper coil. I totally feel your resentment to men on this matter!

    I know you'll have done your research but just know that the copper coil is likely to make your period heavier, I ended up going with the jaydes (and if anyone tells you it's painless to get it removed, THEY LIE! 😂)
    All that aside, I would never go back! I love my coil, my periods actually stopped and they jaydes has the lowest amount of hormones excluding the copper coil so it feels like a great balanced of pros and cons 😁
    Good luck with your copper coil experience, can't wait to hear about your journey x

    About the digestion thing with the fibre, I'm actually not so surprised to hear that a lot of fibre can make you feel a bit worse. My dad has some kind of gastric thing (sorry idk if it's chrons or colitis or what) but he has found leafy greens can be quite bad for him (especially when in the midst of a flare up) and that oddly things like cheese are totally fine. Lucky for him as he lives in France haha.
    He tends to eat a lot of probiotic stuff like yoghurt etc which you already have explored I think. But yeah totally not surprised to hear fibre can make you feel worse!

    I relate so much to your feeling of resentment towards men and guilt about taking conraception. I've been struggling with simmilar feelings over the last year. I'm also concerned about the effects of contraception on the environment so I've been looking into the coil, but I'm kind of scared. Will you keep us updated with your experiences on the coil?

    Would recommend a sulfur-based wash/soap for your back acne. I was prescribed one for my rosacea flare-ups and I’ll put some on my back before I get in the shower and then wash it off, it’s worked really well on clearing up the texture I have on my back.

    Babe copper coil decreases your iron levels as copper in the bloodstream rises.
    Make sure to keep an eye on your levels and if you feel tired etc take an iron supplement xx

    • @elletseB
      @elletseB 3 года назад

      My iron was always depleted on the pill. Not before and not now after having been off for five years and on the copper coil for the same amount of time. I had my levels checked just before coming off the pill and a month later with the copper coil in. My iron levels went from really low to an acceptable level within a month (without supplements) and since then have further gone up to absolutely normal, despite slightly heavier periods.

    hi. yes, it is very unfair that we need to think about contraception. I see that you don't want to put any hormones into your body, make sense. but copper coil will make menstruation longer and more painful. that is what they tell in London Sexual Health Clinic. I never was on a pill but already 5M on hormonal coil. happy about it. they tell hormones don't go to blood stream because it is local and that is why dosage of hormones is much lower than in pill. hope you will find right balance. thanks for raising important subjects.

    I've had too much trauma for IUDs and I've had horrible reactions with both estrogen and progesterone hormonal birth control.
    For those that like it, I'm happy for them.
    But I'm happy tracking my cycle and using condoms. I'm really sensitive to changes anyway so I don't think going without a condom would do me any favours when it comes to yeast infections anyway.

    I've been on the pill, had the copper IUD and now have the hormonal Mirena IUD. I got the copper IUD because I didn't like the idea of ~hormones~ anymore. However, I have extremely heavy periods that obviously the copper IUD did not help with and my iron was starting to get really low so I decided to switch to a hormonal IUD and now my periods are extremely light and it's like a dream. It is worth noting that, from my understanding, though the Mirena is hormonal birth control it only has progestin and the hormones are more localized, so you are less likely to have weird side effects that you do on the pill. I recommend everyone who can get an IUD, hormonal or copper, they are the best.

    you are looking gorgeous lucy! Also some of the things you mention in this vid + in the comments are so interesting biologically! There has been recent research potentially showing that people are more attracted to people that are genetically dissimilar to themselves based on scent alone (maybe bc scent indicates smth about the immune system, and it is good to have children with someone with a v different immune system to yourself) EXCEPT when women are pregnant or on the pill, and from everyones experiences here it really seems like the pill masking your natural body odour is definitely a thing!
    Also maybe interesting that contraceptives for men have been trialled and rejected because they produce symptoms similar to what women experience on the pill uggghhhhhh double standards (+ by the standards of modern medicine most commercially available contraceptives would not get through phase 3 trials nowadays)

    I reccomend Reading the book period power for every women! My mind is blown by what our body does. Its normal you are all over the place when you don’t work with your hormones. It explains the stress in every part of your cycle ! Must read

    • @TheSecretbysarah
      @TheSecretbysarah 3 года назад

      Your feeling of anger is your testosteron coming back. Normally your progesteron would balance this towards the second part of your cycle But when in a lot of stress it can be that your body creates less progesteron. This is the hormone that makes us feel relax, sleep better ,... But also slows down your metabolic system to get all the nutriënt it can from your food intake (in case it has to support a baby).

    My hair has gotten so greasy since coming off the pill 3 months ago, I feel like my body is in oil-producing overdrive since being deprived for all those years! When I was on the pill, I could go 5 days without washing my hair, now it takes 2 days to get to that same level of greasiness. Because of this overproduction of oil, I’m also experiencing bacne, but it’s manageable. Overall, I wouldn’t go back on the pill just to manage these, I guess I have to change my lifestyle a bit!

I bet they have many mates but that is just a secret.

  • @anna-maymoon1001
    @anna-maymoon1001 3 года назад +1

    I want to preface this comment with "everyone's body is different, so you might not react the way I did and I was under a lot of emotional stress at the time*" BUT I tried to get the coil fitted and oh my god it was the absolute worst. I feel like no one's talking about how much it can actually hurt and I would hate for someone not to be mentally prepared for it yaknow?
    Like, for me I've had my smear test which was okay, not the most comfortable thing, hurt a little in the way that an injection does. So I was like 'okay the coil can't be that bad' but it's like the smear but 10x worse.
    They try first with some numbing gel, basically have to shove a speculum up there, then they pinch the back of your cervix (which hurt) and then MEASURE your inside (somehow???) and then theoretically they put the coil in. I only got as far as being measured, it is NOT "a sharp pinch" it felt like he had punched me. Put some more numbing gel on there and then tried again.
    The nurse bless her goes "at least you didn't swear" like... jfc WHY do they not tell you it can really hurt??? I was offered some local anesthetic but I declined bc I was like, 'you can't even shove your fingers in there I don't think you're going to be able to get a needle up there and have me remain still unless you want to strap me down'. Like I can't fault the service I just wish I'd known "most women don't manage to get it put in there because it hurts too much" like.. thank you internet.
    *Cue a small mental break down bc I am fed up with hormones, I also can't really have them bc I get head aches/migraines, I don't get on with condoms because my fanny is sensitive AF and my relationship was breaking down and it's like... What now? I have since broken up with the boyfriend as I asked him to walk down to the surgery to pick me up because I was upset and needed a hug, so naturally he had a right go at me. So that was a waste of 5.5 years and the good years of my 20s.
    Idk I'm off the pill now, I have been for like 1-2 months (2 periods) and I can't put my finger on if I feel like myself because I'm not in a stressful relationship or if it's because I don't have hormones running through me.
    Idk it makes me laugh with all the vaccine stuff because it's like "4 out of 11 million people got a blood clot" uh-huh and how many random side effects does the contraceptive pill have? People fucking DIE from taking it and yet it's not being boycotted? Don't get me wrong, I want my cake and I want to eat it; I would rather not be pregnant and I would like the choices I'm given, but jfc can they not make a pill that doesn't really fuck you up? Can they make a pill for men? Can they make vasectomies reversible? Why can't men get their tubes tied and have to sit and mull over various side effects and try to work out if they're angry because of where they are in their cycle or if their partner is just being a total dick? The amount of things I have supressed because I'm a week before my period and then trying to work out if my cycle still works the same because I'm on the pill like... Bruh. Being female sucks.

      Omg I’m sorry you had to go through that with the coil, it sounds horrific! 😩 I feel so much resentment towards men too regarding contraception, we already have such a hard time with our hormones and menstrual cycle yet we then have to make it even worse by adding more hormones in there with extra side effects! It just sucks so much and I really hope things change in the future. I’m sorry your relationship wasn’t great but I’m glad you’ve ended it now and I hope you’re ok ❤️ sending love ❤️

    I feel weird if I eat too much veg too. I feel like if you're both happy using condoms there's not much point in adding another contraceptive on top, especially when it involves an invasive and painful procedure. My friends on the coil always say 'I was in agony for a week, but now I won't get pregnant for 5 years!' It hasn't convinced me yet tbh!!

    What I think is really funny is that our reactions to taking the pill x stopping the pill are oposite. I don't normaly have a smell if I don't put on deodorant and my skin doesn't break out normally, but when I'm on the pill, all that apears. So yeah, we have reverse experiences, but that goes to show that one way or the other, artificial hormones do make huge chages on our body and it's so important that us women talk about it, so that we understand what is a hormone related symptome and what is something else, because let me tell you, doctors love to invalidate the symptoms I am sure are related to the pill.
