Hi.. You can go even lighter if you don't take with you a sketchbook but just loose paper sheets of the paper of your choice and a nursing clipboard, one of those that are folding. The advantage of taking paper sheets with you is that you can divide them in different bags or your suitcase, in different sizes if you want to and that you can have different types of paper with you. It is more versatile as an option than that of a sketchbook.
Take TONS of photos and videos! While my Son wasn’t much of a photographer or videographer; I’ve got breath-taking photos, even screenshots, that his friends took of their camping trip to Chomolungma. Some of the best shots I love, actually come from his friends dash cam as they maneuvered an RV on a single lane dirt road, a steep Cliff up on one side and a thousand meter, unprotected drop off on the other side, just before arriving at their camping spot. I rode along with them virtually on WeChat and almost called an ambulance because of the chest pains..I was a nervous wreck…until they turned the corner. It was a very bright, moonlit Fall night, and the bluish glow from snow capped Chomolungma..caused their whole group to stop and get out. One photo a friend took even includes the Milky Way over the mountains. I THINK Xiaowei won an award for that picture. I’ve tried to figure out a way to capture it in a painting. It’s impossible in traditional painting, but my best friend is making the first attempt in western style. Have fun, stay safe (and warm!), enjoy & take LOTS of pictures…so I can get tips on how to paint these incredible mountains!
Thank you so much!!!! I have taken SO MANY photos and short video clips (and yes - video of an insane minibus trip through some hills, and the flight into Lokta!) It's impossible to sum up the beauty of this place, especially as a novice watercolourer! The physical side has been very demanding - extremes of temperature, altitude, the climbing etc. I'm not going to Base camp now because my hips aren't up to it, so I'm staying in Namche Bazaar now for a bit on my own, and will do some more art.
Personally, I enjoy these sorts of videos. Watching you go through the process of downsizing your travel kit, what do you really need to bring, do the items you've included really work well together in creating the image you're looking for? All these sorts of questions are very important for everyone's personal art style and it really helps others in planning their own travel kits.
I love watching “what’s in my art kit” videos… never boring! Wow. Colour me impressed. You have really gotten your kit down in size a lot, I wasn’t sure you’d be able to eliminate things!! It really looks like you have everything you might need in your latest version. I’ve often wondered about those camp mugs, I thought they might not be stable enough. Will have to give one a try! Hope you have a fabulous trip!!
I'm glad not everyone found it boring - thank you! My slightly bigger confidence in watercolours has helped with abandoning other things, I think. I might still find the cup unsteady on rough ground - will just have to see how it goes. Thanks!!
I think your final choices are going to be just perfect for you. I’ve truly enjoyed watching all the different combinations you’ve come up with and the way you research and try out all your colors and accessories. Make lots of memories and have a grand time traveling and also have a joyous time painting on your trip.
Thank you for sharing what's in your art kit! I love seeing what others carry ♡ I feel validated in bringing my color pencils with me in my watercolor kit ♡
Wauw, you did so well in downsizing! Less choices, less stress. The lemon yellow running in your palette makes me think of an unruly kid running around causing havoc. only well behaved colours are allowed 😂 have lots of fun and even if you don't sketch at all, it will have been worth all the sorting and playing an swatching. Because it's just fun to do and see for us 🥰 I love that you haven't packed anything yet but spent all that time on your art kit. That's what I do too. 😊
Tips on packing light are always appreciated! Have a wonderful trip. I look forward to seeing your travel work and what your experiences inspire back home as well.
Yep I like to travel light as well. Pop in a mechanical pencil with extra leads and a kneadable eraser and you have my kit as well lol. My colors are not the same as yours but the pencils, neo2 and water color travel set I have as well. I take mine plien air sketching in my area and its really all you need. Nepal trip sounds awesome. Forgot to say I have my stuff in a kippling bag they are so light to carry and have a great selection of stlyes and sizes.
Have learnt now through your video that wax like crayons can also be used as for Aquarell colours, something new to me, soluble pastels! Great something new to try, thank you for letting me know about them.
U r very organized! Nice that u manage to test your materials prior to your trip! I’m just like u: i can spend hours preparing my drawing materials and leave all the rest for the last minute! 😂
I find it so difficult to pack minimal art supplies as I love them all. It's so hard to choose. When you return from your trip, It will be interesting to see if you find you missed something that you wished you had or what you didn't use in your travel kit. At least you got your packing priorities straight - first art supplies then, oh yes, I might need some clothing and toiletries. 😀
It's been VERY hard to choose!! I'm glad of my (slightly) growing confidence with watercolours though, so at least I can have all the colours. And I have 'mainly' packed now, but a new paint set came in the post and distracted me!
Wishing you well on your journeys ✈️ and hope you all have a lovely time away 🏔️🏕️ and looking forward to see your beautiful art 🎨🖌️🏞️ when you return xx
Another great video. I love your priorities, art first, clothes later. I wish you a very happy trip and look forward to hearing and seeing all the fascinating things that make travelling so exciting. Bon voyage.
Thank you so much!! I did eventually pack, though didn't leave it as late as my son... 10 minutes before we said we were leaving, he said 'Er, so what should I take?' 😬
This travel kit series was so fun and I feel so excited for you 😍 thank you for sharing your experience putting this kit together I felt productive by just watching your videos 😅
Wow I really love 💕 your watercolor choices for landscapes. I have not tried the Caran Dache Watercolor Crayons before. They look like they would be fun to try. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us.
Looking good and WTG getting it down to just 1kg! That's impressive now you can take your thermals. 😂 Have the greatest adventure, take care and stay safe. ❤
Enjoy your vacation! I'm still debating on my travel kit (for going down the road rather than adventuring out into the wider world 😂) and the mini setup you have looks great. Hope it works well for you
It's been so interesting following the narrowing-down process. And such a lovely set you've ended up with. Happy painting (and a great holiday of course!) It strikes me that if it's quite cold watercolour would anyway take a long time to dry, so I think you're right to lower your expectations of lots of plein air time. Though you might sketch in the pencils on location and then paint them later?
Great job curating your perfect travel kit! It's been great to watch! Not sure if your clips will work for this, but I found with my collapsible water cup like yours if I held it in place with a binder clip it wasn't too tippy (but mine was on a lap table). I hope you have a wonderful trip!
Hi Helen this is really helpful, I only started painting 3 yrs ago using watercolour, which I love and I'm going on holiday in 5 wks to santorini, I really want to take my sketchbook and paint set etc. I usually use tube watercolour can I ask are you taking tube paints or the pans ? Do you take any tubes with you too or just what you prepare before going ? Many thanks
Hi! Ooo - I love Santorini! (Went there for my 40th!) I just took what I showed in this video - so the paint pan set. I made sure I had filled up the pans from the tubes beforehand though, and let them dry.
Have a great time in Nepal! Have you been before? Looking forward to seeing whatever sketches you manage to do (weather permitting). I’ve been learning the Nepali language, to speak to people living in my local area. Maybe one day I’ll visit Nepal…
@@helencryer “Namaste” is a good place to start because it means hello and goodbye! Two words for the price of one haha! (Or for an older person you can say “namaskar” which is more respectful). Really been enjoying your art travel kit videos 😊 That case you found is a super find!! It really does hold a lot , which is always my trouble if not having enough space. Have a good holiday and I can’t wait to see the paintings you create 😊
I sometimes just like multimedia. Today I did a watercolour, then added some pencil details. I could probably leave out the Neocolors, but I like the different texture you can get from them.
I'd imagined sitting outside painting, so there'll be less of that along the way. I think I'll be busy socialising once I'm inside the tea houses where we'll be staying!
I will admit, I have not yet re organized my kit, from my comment on the last iteration. I have pulled it out though :D I think this is a great slimmed down version. :D
I rewatched that s in preparation to my own trip. I found it very useful. I adapted the Neocolor Selection to the colours of the places I visited. I wouldnt even have thought of a Neocolor set without this inspiration. Thanks so very kuch, it mademy own packingeasier! @helencryer

I'd like to keep them clean from the shavings - I think they're safe enough in the zip compartment, but thank you for the suggestion!
