A comment on 1 Tim 5:19. It's no different to 2 Cor 13:1, where it's clear that ordinary congregation members also require accusations to be backed up by two or three witnesses. Pastors and elders don't get special treatment. It's no more serious to accuse an elder than another person in the congregation. Deut 19 is very clear about the procedures and about false witnesses. The problem with 1 Tim 5.19 is that it's used to intimidate those who seek to bring truthful accusations against Ezekiel 34-type elders. The problem, over and over and over again in our current context is finding pastors and elders who get away with great evil, more than have false accusations raised against them. The systemic abuse also deters people from 'rooting out the evil man from among you'. Instead, there is the misuse of 'how dare you touch the Lord's anointed',-ideology, and closing ranks. Perhaps that would be a good topic to pursue, for the many hurt congregants out there. .Thanks.
