    My father purchased an Adler 189A around 1958. He loved the machine and used 3 in 1 oil to lube the mechanical parts. I remember the machine sewing very fast and smooth. High quality metal was used to construct these machine. Dad passed away but the Adler stands in it's original cabinet in my mom's hallway. it's going to stay in the family.

    My mother had the same machine. I think they got it second hand as this was in the early to mid 60's. Mother did a lot of sewing back then, repairing torn jeans. As there were 5 of us kids, and back then you didn't run down to the store for new clothes every few months. You patched. The thing started breaking needles, found out the pleated timing belt was bad. Dad got the new belt, but couldn't find anyone to repair it. Somehow that task fell to me at 11 years old. My older brother watched mostly, but we got it back in time and running! trouble was, I got the direction control in wrong and it did the opposite direction as labeled! It worked well other wise, so mother figured leave well enough alone and ran it that way from then on! Also, grand mother still had her treadle Singer, so this modern Adler caused them to buy a new modern Singer, which I saved from the estate, just to save it. Back then, in High School, all the girls were required to take Home Economics, how to be a house wife, courses. One of the required Pass/ fail tests was to fully make a dress from scratch. Both my older sisters used that same machine, for their dress making. I'm not sure which sister ended up with the machine after mom passed, hope it's still in the family.

    My mother sewed virtually all my clothes, growing up in the mid-50s, 60s & 70s, on an Adler machine. She did the most beautiful work with it! Wish they still made them, I'd buy one for sure.

    Hi! Is there any chance that you could make a video on how you use the knobs, this one is focused on the stitches and the performance. I would love to see what changes you did on the controls in order to get the stitches you showed not only on how fast and nice it works. I will really appreciate your time and dedication, many of us who have the adler 189 will be very thankful.

      I could use a manual for mine. It's never worked for me, found it at a recycle center for nothing with its original purchase certificate from 1959. It came with color plates of how to operate the cams for different stitches and a comically paternalistic guide on how to choose a sewing machine, but no manual.

      Unfortunately no. The only way to get quality results on those materials is with an industrial "compound feed walking foot" sewing machine. Go to my "industrial machines" playlist and you'll see several examples of those kinds of machines. The cheapest option would be a vintage Singer 111W155. Consew 206/226, Adler 167/267, Brothers LS2-B837, etc. are what you want. You'll be horribly frustrated trying to do proper upholstery with a domestic machine like this Adler. The quality of work will be poor as well since you can't effectively feed the material or use the proper thread with proper tensions. Goodluck!

    • @AzurBaumi
      @AzurBaumi 5 лет назад

      Threading is the same as for the Adler 189. The only difference between the two models is in the hook type: 153 has a standard CB hook, 189 has a rotary hook (higher number of stitches per minute possible). I think you should be able to figure threading from this video. I have an 153 and an 153A (189 is hard to get, 189 A/AB is almost impossible). Beautiful machines.

      If you're doing more clothing construction and working with lighter weight materials I'd go with the Adler. If you're working with more denim, canvas and heavier weight fabrics I'd go with the Necchi. Both are great machines but there is a refinement in the feel of the Adler that I appreciate.

Does this machine use a reverse direction motor or can a standard motor be used? Also, are the stitch patterns formed by a single cam following arm or two? From the looks of the cam you show, it appears the cams have two layers and I'm wondering how the needle bar is driven. Thanks for any info and for the video!

      Glenn Thomas Back in 2003, I bought this same model of Adler on eBay. When it arrived, I discovered that the seller had failed to mention its shredded timing belt in the ad. I never got a refund, nor could I find a replacement for its deteriorated timing belt... at that time I was told by several sewing machine service people that the replacement timing belts for these machine were NLA. The machine's timing belt was nothing more but a granulated plastic fine powder and many nylon? Strands. Adding to that, the machine was frozen (completely stuck) , and disassembling it to find he cause, I found that the needle bar was broken into two pieces. I cut my losses at that points not, and the machine went to the metal recyclers. It came with no attachments, cams, or instruction n manual. not even a foot control.

    Buyers take note: These machines use a synthetic timing belt that disintegrates over time. Be sure to tip the machine up and verify that the machine's upper and lower shafts rotate as they should, and verify that the cogged timing belt is in good shape. A replacement timing belt was NLA in 2003, and I do not believe that has changed. I found this out the hard way, after buying the machine from a dishonest seller who was so to be kicked off of eBay. I never got a refund, and the machine wound up going to the metal recyclers. It came with nothing but the machine head itself.

Apparently he sews a new belt for this. I have no idea how much this would cost, but I believe he can do it. He's from West Africa, and I don't doubt his or his colleagues' ingenuity.

      A few of the European sewing machines have this issue.. The Pfaff # 130 has two fiber gears and a timing belt made of hemp. I had a Swiss "Calanda" machine with the same issues. The Singer #'s 206-306-319 all had hemp timing belts and they stretched when soaked with oil ( Throwing them badly off time ). No replacement parts are available for these machines.. A better machine ( hard to find ) is a Bernina 117… No fiber or nylon gears and no belts..
