100%...we have a few really good pitchers and the best you can get out of them sometimes is one of their great pitches that was left over the plate and you gotta eat when that pitch comes.
Try to pick up the pitchers tendencies before your at-bat, Hunt faseballs early and often, and as a bonus, if your not at-bat see if the pitcher is tipping any pitches. ;)
What is your advice for holding a batter on first so you can preserve force outs as long as possible? which pitch in the count to throw over to discourage the runner? when the runner is most likely to run in a count? All this with the idea of doing enough to keep the runner close so the pitcher can concentrate on the batter, not necessarily to pick off the runner. I hate throwing over to first because most of the time I throw wild and the ball careens into the outfield foul area and runner ends up on third.
My kid did a pick off to first and hit the first baseman right in his knee cap. My advice is to keep the first baseman awake - and aim small for his knee cap.
How can you identify pitches? (for the newer players). Is this easy or hard to do? Does this happen at the high school level? maybe you already have a video on this
@@DanBlewett what is the best way, is it to go to a batting cage and have one of those machines pitch many balls until you can start to identify? maybe it takes a couple years to get good at identifying quickly. I assume you have to identify in say a 1/3 second so that you can adjust your swing to match by the time the ball reaches plate?
id say another underlying message to all this is patience. getting the pitch count up is a game of patience as well, so is waiting for the chance to finally capitalize on the pitchers mistakes and laying off on any pitches that are on the edge of the strikezone or breaking pitches that has too much stuff and is impossible to hit.

The best advice to beat ace pitching is with ace hitting. Swing that bat 10,000 times in preseason - the pitcher likely threw that many pitches. And work on your defense - all it takes to win a real pitching duel is one run.

The count to me means nothing unless its a runner on 3rd less than 2 outs and your my speedy or put the ball in play contact hitters and you get behind 0-1 that's the only sutuation . I want your best controlled power swing until you get to 2 strikes in that 1st at bat I literally want the hitter to decide what am I against vs this guy today can he strike me out? Or was it all hype if he can't guess what you get to continue to hit with 0 count restrictions with nobody on for the 2nd at bat 3rd at bat and so on literally I will not ask them to hit with the count until they show no Disipline. This is mostly for guys who are not my power guys who have been told in the past that 0-1 1-1 2-1 even just put the ball in play. I don't like that I believe everyone has power its just either gap power or fence over wall power and you make the pitchers life very easy when you give your B swing with nobody on and that just increases the pitchers confidence. Another thing I do is break the strike zone up into 12 boxes each player gets a designated 0-0 count zone this is where that power but with discipline comes in. The pitcher never knows where the the mistake is at until we have checkmated him.
