Salisbury Plain Military Aviation in 2020

- Military Aviation which took place on Salisbury Plain Training Area this year 2020. A mix of general training flights, confined area landings and larger military exercises as seen on the SPTA and nearby Keevil and Middle Wallop airfields. SPTA unmanned airfields filmed are Deptford Down and Everleigh DZ.
Deptford Down is an unmanned grass runway on downland in the west of the Plain. it has a public footpath running along the southern edge of the runway giving excellent views of military helicopter training.
Everleigh airfield is an unmanned grass field on the eastern end of Salisbury Plain. This whole area has permissive byway access on the tracks but the grass airfield is out of bounds due to regular dangerous activity. It is used for military helicopter training and is the main parachute drop-zone for C130 and A400m aircraft.

Thank you for posting this, especially of the Puma heli's, they brought back some good memories of military excercises in Germany, some years back, the scene at 25:00 with all the troops on the ground and the heli's flying in, in formation and forming up, I remember well kneeling down in a stick/squad of ten men, next to five other sticks spread out across a farmers field or forest area somewhere in Germany, as we waited for the Puma heli's to arrive. They would arrive; each heli hovering low above the ground in front of each stick, then when the pilot gave the thumbs up, you jumped up and ran to your respective heli where the despatcher grabbed and heaved you inside by your webbing kit, then all six heli's once loaded would fly off in formation to the next dropping point where you would be disembarked in reverse into another field or forest clearing or something, then onto ground completion of your next task before tabbing to you next pick up point some kilometres away and then being lifted out again; so thankyou for that bit of nostalgia, great to see it and reminisce :)

thanks. i agree it is good to see the older types. the b212 role has been replaced by the Puma so no more Army 212s. sad.

It’s a shame the MoD are selling off the Hercs. I’m convinced the Atlas 400 can’t be thrown around like the workhorse of the C130, taking-off on rough ground etc. Still, awesome footage and please keep it coming!
totally agree. ge c130is smaller but that gives it different capabilities. i hear the SAS want the Herc. thanks for the en encouragement. will gave the new spta 2022 video out soon.

Some of these whirly birds are so old, surprised they have not been replaced. I used to fly about in Puma's, Chinooks and Lynx's back in the 80's! And C130's time for a serious upgrade.
Pumas and Chinooks have been upgraded since the 80's. C130 is the J model, again an 'improved' model of the K from the 80's.

Peter, you are right! Same types for 50 years. But only the Pumas are old airframes. They have just had a 50 years in service birthday! They will be going soon though.
