If you're the oldest of the people to compete that year, you aren't climbing any higher up the ladder if other people die before you. So it wouldn't matter if all or none of the other competitors had died if he were the oldest to start with.

Even though the flag was made before they were defined that way, it still feels a little insulting to group two massive differing continents together. My dad met him for an interview well before he gave it back, and he actually told my dad about it. A few years later, he got all his expenses paid for to travel to the Olympics and hand it back, and my dad got to meet him again before he left.
