  • Our hero, Charlie Waterman, is an intelligent young man with the benefit of a good education and a proper upbringing, but he has yet to find a niche for himself in the world. Although he has a job as a clerk he longs for an adventure of some sort to take him away from his humdrum lifestyle.
Excitement comes one day in the form of a mysterious letter from a Mister Edward Sampson, the new owner of Charlie’s ancestral home, where Charlie had lived as a small boy with his grandfather. Sampson has found a sealed envelope from Charlie’s granddad, the Squire of Wilton, who was a noted explorer and naturalist. Charlie visits the hall and discovers that the envelope contains a riddle which refers him to an ancient notebook hidden in the house that holds the key to an age-old secret. The notebook contains pages written in Greek and Egyptian hieroglyphics and many scientific diagrams. His interest piqued, Charlie brings the notebook home with him determined to solve the puzzles that it contains. Could this be the adventure that he seeks?
Charlie and his fiancée, Victoria, visit an Oxonian professor of ancient languages, Professor Brady. He identifies the notebook as having once belonged to Nicholas Kratzer, a German mathematician and astronomer who had become Henry VIII’s court astronomer. He tells them about Kratzer’s research and special interest in sundials. Brady translates the Greek text from the notebook and becomes very excited; apparently it has been written by Herodotus and it describes a secret sanctuary designed and built by the ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep at the behest of the Third Dynasty Pharaoh Zoser. The sanctuary could possibly contain the tombs of all of the 3rd and 4th dynasty pharaohs.
If found this sanctuary would be the greatest archaeological discovery to date.
Charlie sets off to Egypt to follow his dream pursued by others who want the treasure for themselves.
Charlie starts the adventure young, cocky, and immature, but, as he meets and tackles the various problems and dangers along the way, he grows wiser and starts to re-assess his own life. Many of the issues that he suffered as a young boy are resolved during his adventure as he realizes that he is to blame for many of his own problems.
Charlie learns about contentment and happiness and realises what is really important in life. There is plenty of action in the book, some sexual intrigue, two nasty villains, a father/son/granddad feud, and lots of excitement with underground chambers, crocodiles, ancient secrets, curses and double crosses.
The story touches on the eternal question of the meaning of life and examines the reasons and motivations for life. How do we find eternal peace? What do we really crave? How do we achieve contentment?
