  • The basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari is the place where the history of the Catholic Church meets the history of Poland. They are connected by Queen Bona Sforza, who was the Duchess of Bari and lived her last days there.
Saint Nicholas, also called Nicholas of Bari or Nicholas of Myra, (flourished 4th century, Myra, Lycia - Asia Minor, near modern Demre, Turkey; Western feast day December 6; Eastern feast day December 19), one of the most popular minor saints commemorated in the Eastern and Western churches and now traditionally associated with Christmas. In many countries children receive gifts on December 6, Saint Nicholas Day. He is one of the patron saints of children and of sailors.
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas was built in the late 11th century to shelter and venerate the relics of Saint Nicholas that reached Bari on May 9th, 1087 from the homonymous church in Myra. Behind the main altar there is also the late 16th-century tomb of Bona Sforza - Duchess of Bari and Queen of Poland. The tomb stands between two semi-nude female figures, representing Bari and Poland, and two images of the saints Nicholas and Stanislaus.
