  • Should you keep your crawl space vents open in the summer and closed in the winter? Join Michael Church from Crawl Space Ninja as he debunks this widespread advice and offers expert insights on managing your crawl space vents in different climate conditions. You'll learn why sealing crawl space vents in the winter might not be enough to prevent cold drafts and frozen pipes, and why proper insulation and heating are essential. Michael also shares practical tips on insulating crawl space walls and using heated tape on exposed pipes to keep your home warm and energy-efficient during the colder months.
Summer brings its own set of challenges, as hot, humid air entering through open crawl space vents can lead to mold growth and structural damage. Michael explains how encapsulating your crawl space can control humidity and maintain a stable, conditioned environment year-round. Discover the benefits of using a vapor barrier, insulation, and a dehumidifier to transform your crawl space into a well-insulated, energy-efficient part of your home. Whether you're dealing with a vented or encapsulated crawl space, Michael's expertise will guide you in creating a healthier, more comfortable living environment.

Whenever I’m in a situation such as this I always ask myself, “What Would Michael Church Do?”

Hey Michael, got a question for you. I have a venter crawl space that sits on a concrete slab and has block for the walls. I'd like to insulate amd encapsulate. What I can't understand. Do I first attach foam board using Hilti nails, then encapsulate over the foam? Or do I encapsulate first then attach the foam? If the latter, how would I attach the boards over the barrier?

Sorry, you've got SOO much good info but I'm at like step 0.1 of this process.

Hey! What you'll want to do is Foam Board on the crawl space walls first then Vapor Barrier over the walls. You can also use Insul-Vapor Barrier too instead on the walls. Here is a link to ours - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-ninja-insul-barrier-r-value-r-8-73-100-sq-ft/

Should I go with 10 mil or 20 mil vapor barrier?

Both can be troublesome. We have experience in both. 10 mil tend to be two 5 mils glued together which would create that cat urine/pneumonia after it peeled away. 20 mil tends to be two thick to be used in uneven terrain.
