I enjoyed your tour de force on this, my transmission. It has served on my e34 tds for 335 000 km by now. Two oil changes these past 200 000 km. My e34 is now largely restored, except the M51 engine that will see a complete overhaul this summer (I'm only worried about the chains, but the improved power output will definitely be appreciated, once the job is done :). Feel free to search YT for "My e34 touring: from stock to stock". Congrats also on your excellent English, including the technical terms! Are you from Scandinavia? And I am truly sorry, you lost your e34 in an accident. :(
Great Video! How many parts are inter changeable with 5HP19, especially on D-G and F Drums, they looks pretty similar. I am thinking buying a 5HP18 as spare parts to repair my 5HP19 which had broken D-G drum.
Hello Frank, I'm writing in English now, but I think you're Dutch-speaking like me :-) I drive a 1992 E34 525TDS with 190,000km. The ZF works pretty well but I have a problem I think. When I drive on the highway (at 110 km/h for example) the engine runs at +- 1900 rpm. When I accelerate a little bit, the engine immediately turns up 500 rpm and after a few seconds it picks up again and starts to run at 2000 rpm. It's as if it slips for 500 rpm before it picks up. When I give a solid amount of throttle, it reacts almost like a kick down. The revs shoot up and it shifts down. Can you give me some advice on where to look for the problem ? Grts Patrick Antwerp
Hello, I have a bmw e34 and my gearbox broke last year, today I got a new gearbox but te connector is different, is it possible to swap it over? I have a few more questions is it possible to connect to you anywhere to ask about it? ( Ik ben Nederlands, volgens mij jij ook )
Don't scrap anything! The gearboxes for M60 engines are very rare. It was a pain in the ass to find an exact same 5HP18 spare for my 530i. But I got a question. My gear selector is broken and the car is stuck in Neutral. Is it really necessary to remove the whole valve body, or is it possible to just remove the rear part of the valve body to get that broken piece out? Nice video!
With removing only that one valve housing, you risk losing some tension on the gasket in the middle. Just do a complete valve body clean and fit a new gasket and new selector. It really pays off!
I have the issue with this transmission, i do the GM 4 speed to this ZF 5 speed swap into my e39 and since the swap was done the transmission acting weird, random knocking noise from transmission when idle and moving (in any gear position), and its shift bad when coasting to stop at 40-50 kmh or 20-30 mph the transmission cant find the suitable gear for that speed, its always shift 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd (up and down) in the rage of that speed all the time, and one time it shift very bad the car jumping forward and it trigger the traction control, So should i overhaul or change it to another. (low budget)
@@poeliewoelie1987 I'm done the complete swap with wiring and TCU from the e39 pre face (mine also pre face) form the shift problem i suspect the tcu but the knocking noise(loud) are more concern to me
im not sure that fail tcu can cause any physical knocking noise? is it possible? but the noise problem occur when doing hard turn or sometime it just come when idle or moving, but the sound gone when car start to accelerate. its just random, which is PITA

@@poeliewoelie1987 yes, it slides while in motion. the oil smelled exhausted, the color was not bad. I changed the oil and filter but the problem remained. bmw e36 325i
This is very need video. This is brilliant video. Thank you very much.
Love your videos, much details !

can you give more details what upgrades are available and where to purchase? thanks
Do you happen to know its overall length from the bellhousing to where the prop rubber mounts?
Im doing an auto to manual conversion you see.

When my gearbox is in P position the wheel won't lock, what should I check?
The lever that hits into the geared wheel. This lever has a notch that can break when the transmission gets old.
Where is the lever located?
