15:40 Smaller jewelry stores tend to have less security & less "valuable" product. The major jewelry stores you tend to hear about getting robbed have more "valuable" products & more security. Also for why the robbers were wearing coats it's to keep their arms from getting cut on the glass. They don't want to leave blood/DNA behind &/or need a doctor.

George is a fantastic writer and a welcome edition to Simon's already talented roster of creatives, but I'm wondering, is Callum gone for good? Seems like I haven't heard his name in a while 😔
@@ashabasha David writes so explicitly that Simon has at least twice had to refuse to continue reading out loud. He includes numerous asides that have nothing to do with the story and are antagonistic. Not to mention including supposed scenarios that by the end of the video you realize must have been made up because no one who was present lives to the end to have told anyone the story. And that's just from what, three stories of his I've heard? Not a David fan for the most part.
This episode was one of the best. Big ups for the whole team, especially for George for going trough the tremendous amount of work to produce this script. Good story, well edited and well presented. This quality is why I follow most of your channels Simon.
I agree, having the robbery ones in between the murder episodes helps me as well, and I'm sure it helps others too. The latter sometimes gets to be a lot sometimes. So in a weird sort of way... it's refreshing with the robbery episodes. George you absolute LEGEND.
I am such a sucker for these long videos specially the ones I have not heard of like this one. I really enjoy your narration! :) Thank you for your hard work.
Me too, I enjoy these while doing my chores. You have nice content as well, I have watched you Canada Cult video. I subscribed, I will watch more after this one.
I tend to buy audiobooks based on their length, so I’m in complete agreement. I love the long videos and was impressed with the amount of work George put into this script.
@@syyneater ME TOO! There are times I like short videos (i..e during a quick brake) but oof nothing like an hour + video/podcast/audiobook and a long walk.
TF2 "I am the Spy!" I like the "breathing room" the heist episodes give too. As always, a shout out to all the writing staff who do a fantastic job in their research, storytelling, and depth of details in these scripts. Jens' memes are the whipped icing on top of course. Thanks Jen! P.S. I'd LOVE to read more from George (book form or otherwise).
For those who, like me, were curious - AK-47s generally use 7.62mm rounds (including the Chinese Type 56 variant, which is technically an AK-56, but based on the 47), while the AK-102 and AK-107 natively accept 5.56 as mentioned early on. These were not available at the time, however, as they were produced in 1995. Instead, it may be a set of AK-74s, which use 5.45mm, which is close enough that the confusion is understandable.
I believe the rifles mentioned in the video might be export models made by norinco for the American civilian market. If my memory is not terrible they did make quite a few 5.56x45mm AK rifles. Edit: it was the Norinco 84S.
The norinco 84s was only produced in 1989 and the s stands for semi. His weapon was automatic. I think George just made a slight mistake as he makes it a point to say that they were soviet weapons.
I normally hate podcasts but I am OBSESSED with this channel. The writing and delivery is exactly my type of humor. And most importantly, all the victims and survivors get the respect they deserve and I love that Simon never glorifies the horrors the criminals commit.
I loved this episode! I also love that George’s life story is so wild that I can’t even begin connect the dots we’ve been given. I do miss Callum but I do love George’s writing and research.
I know Simon said that the less murder-y videos don't do as well, but I enjoy the episodes like this worlds more. Seeing and hearing the joy and Simon's face, feeling the passion that drives George's writing, it's excellent. A wonderful way to end what was a.. very trying week for me. I cannot wait to see George's next script.
The amount of work George put in, along side the exceptional quality and reliability is well above the vast majority of anything on RUclips and it shows. Heck, it's of an academic quality, and I do not say that lightly. George, my highest praises go to you for this episode in all that you did, not just the final product, but in everything that was also left out to make the product more relevant, despite interesting tangents.
I am growing fonder of the “least deathy” episodes too. I started off seeking short term disgust and morbid curiosity. Now I really welcome these episodes between the heavy material of some others. I care more about the survivors and victims, and I feel like I understand that criminals are humans too, often they choose to do horrific things, sometimes they are driven to them by ill-health or other criminals… but even the most disturbing criminals were innocent babies once. I think this show expands the grey areas, and increases empathy.
They both have their places in the Whistler-verse. I feel like Sam is best utilized in less "serious" stories. His humor and memes tend to be a little darker and antagonistic. While Jen does a damn good job with adding just the right amount of levity without crossing lines of possibly offending people. I love Jen's work, but having a bit of a dark and morbid sense of humor myself, Sam's work tends to resonate with me a little more.
i dont comment much at all but i feel it very necessary to say how amazing this episode was. I definitely love that we get so many different interesting stories from people living in different places where native stories are bound to be far more popular but far lesser known to other places! I usually only extend this silly proposal to friends but I currently work in a library and intend on doing so as a career and if any of my friends were to ever write a book, I'd absolutely break a librarian's technical code of conduct of not being too super biased when making displays or recommending resources but if I were to ever hear George has written such a biography, I will 100% request it to my library and put it on displays as often as possible!! This script was so well written and done that I have no doubt the book would be the same! I only found this podcast a week or two ago and I always start from first episode to newest and this is easily my favorite episode yet! Definitely a nice reprieve from the past few episodes 😅binging them each day whenever i get the chance I've certainly had to take a few breaks to watch some cute animal videos to decompress 😅
What a come back for George! I'm glad that he didn't get discouraged after the unfortunate reception of the Hello Kitty Murder episode. Nicely done, George!
@@sotnos1125 I think it was to do with the fact that the way it was written was so explicit that Simon had to stop reading. It was very well written, it just wasn't sensitive enough about the subject material

Oh yeah, TONS of little meme/joke inserts from Jen, freaking loving this episode.. Officially my favorite episode of TCC so far. Keep at it Jen, doing *_fantastic_* work
Another great video, since you live in CZ same as I, would love to see you maybe cover some Czech criminals like Jiří Kajínek or Jaroslav and Dana Stodolovi!
My favourite of Simon's channels. I went through the worst year if my life last year with the only upside being my Simon Whister addiction. The shows are like an intelligence injection. Fast paced, well researched and engaging. Teamed with a fantastic professional support crew, I am sure Simon will be a staple of the internet for years to come. It's like he's single handedly trying to counterbalance the drivel and rot the internet spews daily with facts and intrigue, tinged with humility and sarcasm.
@@wonwon3251 I'm aware. I subscribe to all his channels. I think you need to, to get the whole picture. The fact channels can be a little dry, you need a bit of caz crim and the blaze to get the human side.
I think every two gruesome episodes, we should have a "wholesome" one with no murders, just robberies or sloppy criminals with sloppier police. It's always amusing watching Simon be like: how the f they got away with this??????
I think these are actually more interesting than ones which are just gore and guts. Evil people are just not as interesting as those that are mostly ‘normal’ but who just slipped sideways in society due to whatever bizarre combination of bad luck, ill judgement, timing, silly laws, circumstances, poor impulse control etc. More relatable. The over the top evil ones just make me hate humanity. This is not a confession.
I know I am a year late, but I've just discovered your channels and have been binge watching everything from the very beginning (love all your works!!) but I can offer some insight about the confusion regarding pronunciation in this vid. :D George is thinking exclusively in terms of Mandarin pronunciation when he gave you the pronunciation guides, but Hong Kong has historically been (especially before 1997) a Cantoneses-speaking region (aside from English, of course, during the British era). The thing with the Chinese language/dialects is that they only share the written characters (and even then, often times each dialect will have its unique characters that is exclusive to that region), but pronunciations can varied significantly (and I mean SIGNIFICANTLY) amongst each dialect. Tsim Sha Tsui is the pronunciation in Cantonese, but in Mandarin it is pronounced as Jian Shazui, but they are both written as 尖沙嘴. Same thing with the name, 葉繼峰, the main antagonist of this story. He didn't "change" his name or "became" Yip Kai Foon. Yip Kai Foon is how his name is pronounced in Cantonese, whereas Ye Ji Fong is how it would be pronounced in Mandarin. :) Hope this cleared up your confusion on why the "English" name does not match up with the supposed Chinese pronunciation. Love your work and thanks to all on the team for an amazing job!
George is an absolute legend in this! That's amazing how much research and legwork he did, those interviews and stuff, very impressive. That amount of work certainly should lead to a book! Also, an autobiography. He is a mystery.
I gotta say, George is one hell of a good writer and I've loved his scripts so far. So I would 1000% say yes to the book! 😄 His writing is really captivating
Long term i can easily imagine this channel creating an almost pavlovian reaction in Simon where he, after time and time again being relieved to see he doesn’t have to read a horrible murder script, starts feeling joy any time he hears the news mention burglary or drug smuggling
Hello Simon and George, Simon, your delivery is always fun and even when you get into the weeds or are miles away on a tangent it is a pleasure to listen to your videos. I was only introduced 2 weeks ago and I am bingeing everything. Can't wait to move on to your other channels. George, you have not only a great talent for researching and collating data from these crimes, you are a very gifted writer. I was particularly impressed by the introduction/cool open of this episode. It gets you invested in the video so fast my first thought was "I hope George uses this talent in trying to get published". I would definitely be interested in any of your future writings not just for Simon's channels and to read a book about Yip Kai Foon's life.
I'd totally buy that book. That would be an awesome read by an awesome writer. Totally look forward to a new episode on the weekends. Simon, Jen, George, and all the other writers never cease to amaze me. Last note: Simon for a gem like that, give George the honor of hosting an episode of his own, or at the very least, a basement with carpet and a window.
George is a fantastic writer. Solid addition to your team Simon. Looking forward to his next script! And I’ll buy his book as well. Possibly even more interested in reading George’s autobiography.
Wow! Just wow! I am always pleased to see content I have not seen before. And, George really blew this one out of the water. Excellent research and awesome writing! George should definitely write the book. Thanks to the whole team--Simon, George, and Jen--for such a great program!
I’m fascinated by the varying standards of writers across Simon’s channels. I won’t name names because we all have different opinions and calling people out isn’t fair, but it is notable that this channel has particularly strong writers. I love the absurdity of brain blaze, and decoding the unknown, explrd and warographics are thought provoking. Highlight history, geographics, biographics are generally ok, with some very strong and some lazy or weak episodes. Today I found out - variable. Top tens I really can’t get along with but sometimes sparks a research spiral. What I really enjoy from Simon’s content is the personality and the range of topics that I wouldn’t otherwise think about. But with these new channels I’m really appreciating the writing quality as well. It’s not going to be perfect and as we all in know, ‘recollections may vary’….. but there is serious effort going in to these ones and I really appreciate it. Thank you team Simon.
Edit 2: massive thank you to George for the work on this. While you're making that book, I'm sure many would be interested in your story as well. AM I RIGHT SIMON!!? Love these, "watch" while I run my route... I do the picture in picture thing and have it on the corner because I don't have yt red or whatever. I just listen while I have my route app open. Edit: don't move to Georgia, USA or stay too long... Humidity makes hot and cold both that much worse. Or just stay inside lol.
Another superb episode, thoroughly enjoyed it! By the way, street names in Hong Kong are derived from the Cantonese-based Eitel/Dyer-Ball romanisation, and always pronounced in the Cantonese way. Mut Wah Street is pronounced in Mandarin/Putonghua as "woo hooah" (and romanized as "Wu Hua"), and in Cantonese as "mutt (as in the dog) waa."
Ahhh, Simon. I love your stories, on all your channels. All day I am amused, educated and frequently blown away. Keep up the great job. Kudos to the writers, they are the reason we all have this entertainment. Epic!
This is probably my favorite episode, partially due to learning about Hong Kong culture from George as someone trying to reconnect to my culture. But also, this was super well written and the research was incredible. He absolutely could write a book about him. If he made this a full series, I’d watch it all. Thanks for this!
George you legend! Not only is your writing style wonderful but that down the rabbit hole research is awesome! I can absolutely understand getting carried away when you find the little caches of information that lead to 5 more & just keep following your nose. How can you walk away from such fascinating people!?! Thanks for sharing as much as you could in 1 episode. I'm unable to read books ( aquired disability), I'd love a podcast version or audio book of the rest of the stuff you found
Man, this was one of the best episodes! I love all of creativeness and detailed information George added. Coupled of course with Simon’s commentary, which I never tired off and Jenn’s (not sure how to spell her name😅) memes! Thanks for all the hard work, I appreciate all of you. And to George, I say yes to the book!
George definitely has some nice connections in China to gain access to so many state resources to this story. George should definitely write the book. It would be a shame to not further utilize the work he's already done. He's a very gifted writer, obviously a diligent researcher, and this is a fascinating tale that deserves the deeper look. Massive kudos, George. Well done, lad. This is one of the best episodes yet.
I listened to this in podcast form at work, however I felt the need after the end to come and comment on how impressive the effort George put into this really is. Bravo
Definitely also needed this episode as a breather. Super well-written, and a great topic--and yes, George should write that book. Waiting for someone to string together all the little life nuggets we learn about George like someone probably has for Danny.
Hey, honestly this has been one of my favorite episodes in a while! Not to say that they've been bad, but you can tell that some of them have been getting to Simon, or that the world in general is being a bit much, but it seemed like all that fell away and everything came down to the story being told today. Well done George, if you write that book I hope it is either in english or has an english translation bc I want it!
As a Mandarin speaker, having visited HK, it took me so long to realize George was giving Mandarin readings of the names. It felt like even the Mandarin people I knew still used the Cantonese for a lot of place names, so the pronunciation guide really threw me off. The names like Mut Wah and Tsim Tsa Tsui are the Cantonese readings. I hope Simon understands he wasn't going insane, poor guy. I wish that difference was explained at the start.
This is one of, if not your best episode yet. George, my man, seriously amazing work. I was as blown away as Simon. Also, Jen is amazing at these edits. Pitching Simon's voice up when he gets a bit spazzy was a stroke of utter genius.
Great episode. My special thanks to George. I am especially grateful that Simon has had an easier episode after the last two which were extremely stressful.
Whistler! Thanks again for all of your content that we love so much! Keep up the great work mate, love hearing all the tangents and family updates. Cheers!
The beginning of literally every single casual criminalist "Hello, thank you to Jen and today's writer - this script is thick" One day, Simon won't think the script is thick and it will be a truely revolutionary day
Definitely love a nice robbery or less violent crime filled episode. I do need to lear not to watch these before bed. George please do write that book. I’d love to hear more about some of the other crimes he committed and / more from the officers. I hope Simon paid a bonus and/or a tip after realizing how much effort you put in. Amazing job.

@@ashabasha i agree with you about David
The level of research is beyond stellar. I really hope he gets to write his books.
This episode was one of the best. Big ups for the whole team, especially for George for going trough the tremendous amount of work to produce this script. Good story, well edited and well presented. This quality is why I follow most of your channels Simon.
Favourite part of every episode is Simon getting himself back on track with a “come on Whistle Boy”.
Amazing episode. Please tell George that we really do appreciate his comprehensive investigation and writing!
@@monsil7752 thank you! I truly appreciate it. I am still learning but I hope you enjoy!!!!!!
As am I.. love these
I tend to buy audiobooks based on their length, so I’m in complete agreement.
George is a legend. I expect him one day to write an episode about some case or mystery he cracked himself.
Oooooo! Wouldn't that be awesome?!?!?
Maybe one involving his great uncle?
@@NoOne-ki3bm Yes! How his great-uncle solved a murder inside the Japanese POW camp and uncovered an informant of the Kempetai!
Three cheers for George, everyone who volunteered information and their stories, and ofc Simon & Jen!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused by the 5.56
I believe the rifles mentioned in the video might be export models made by norinco for the American civilian market.
Interesting I was wondering the same
It jumps back to 7.62 later in the video so either differently chambered rifles or just a mistake.
Great episode, George going the extra mile and interviewing the officer is exceptional, and his life is a mystery :)
I normally hate podcasts but I am OBSESSED with this channel. The writing and delivery is exactly my type of humor. And most importantly, all the victims and survivors get the respect they deserve and I love that Simon never glorifies the horrors the criminals commit.
Yep. In fact, he even berates them for messing up in their crimes. Mocking the criminals as well as respecting those affected by the crimes.
I loved this episode! I also love that George’s life story is so wild that I can’t even begin connect the dots we’ve been given. I do miss Callum but I do love George’s writing and research.

I'm really looking forward to this break from psychotic child murders and into something more heist related. Thank you! 👍
Yeah, these past few have just been awful. This is a nice break, before we get back into the complete pieces of crap.
Same. I passed this by twice today thinking I just can't get in that mind set right now. Thrilled to buckle in for a heist.
Thanks, Team!
I'm with you on that one... although the deathy ones are not as mentally troublesome to me but meh i'm disturbed anyway
I really did love George’s script, but Jen did an amazing job editing had me laughing
Jens edits just keep getting better and better as time goes by
She's just working on catching up to sam who is also amazing edits lol
@@resid3nt3v1l nah, Jen and Sam are equally amazing. Probably at slightly different things! But I love them both equally!
@@terryenby2304 I can agree with that
They both have their places in the Whistler-verse.
I was not expecting I AM I AM THE ONE
i dont comment much at all but i feel it very necessary to say how amazing this episode was.
I agree now you mention it.
I had no idea the hello kitty episode didn't go down well - that's one of my favourites
@@sotnos1125 I think it was to do with the fact that the way it was written was so explicit that Simon had to stop reading. It was very well written, it just wasn't sensitive enough about the subject material
@@sotnos1125 I really liked that one as well I had no idea that others didn’t
That one was stomach-turning. Despite the brilliance of George’s writing, I ended up wishing I hadn’t listened to it.
I think Jen saw my comment on the last video- ALL sorts of video inserts in this video, I freaking love it
Only 10 minutes in and already several audible laughs. Love the work Jen :D
Oh yeah, TONS of little meme/joke inserts from Jen, freaking loving this episode.. Officially my favorite episode of TCC so far.
Keep at it Jen, doing *_fantastic_* work
Would love to see an episode on the Pink Panthers!
They have some truly “too crazy to be true” heists
This was my favourite episode yet. Thank you.
Another great video, since you live in CZ same as I, would love to see you maybe cover some Czech criminals like Jiří Kajínek or Jaroslav and Dana Stodolovi!
George, please write the book. You put in an incredible amount of research on an absolutely fascinating character.
@Jodie Crosby Your comment is so well written that you should worry about waking up in a basement in the Czech Repiblic.
He has a fact channel 👏
@@wonwon3251 I'm aware. I subscribe to all his channels. I think you need to, to get the whole picture. The fact channels can be a little dry, you need a bit of caz crim and the blaze to get the human side.
I hope this year is a marked improvement over last year for you!
Lovely idea for a book George. There were so many interesting points in this story with room for much more depth in the recounting.

Hats off to George for giving us this very special episode!
I gotta say, George is one hell of a good writer and I've loved his scripts so far. So I would 1000% say yes to the book! 😄 His writing is really captivating
Born and raised in Hong Kong, appreciate these HK eps, it’s rare that any western media I follow covers them, thanks George!
Long term i can easily imagine this channel creating an almost pavlovian reaction in Simon where he, after time and time again being relieved to see he doesn’t have to read a horrible murder script, starts feeling joy any time he hears the news mention burglary or drug smuggling
🤣 that would be hilarious
Hello Simon and George,
Simon, your delivery is always fun and even when you get into the weeds or are miles away on a tangent it is a pleasure to listen to your videos.
George, you legend, i was wondering how you got SO MANY details in this episode. Absolutely amazing.
This is why I love academics with high levels of scholarship. Thanks, George!!!
Epic!
Great video Simon, and awesome script George!
I think we need a "meet the team" video!! All the writers and Jen and everyone can tell us a little bit about themselves!
I would love that!
That sounds like a lot of fun. They could each write a small, mostly factual blurb about themselves and have Simon cold read it.
Excellent episode!! Well done George and a great read Simon and visuals etc from Jen. Really enjoyed this one
Best one yet. Good work to the whole team.
That was absolutely beautiful with the research and detail. Great job George!!!!
I would love to read George's biography of Yip Kai Foon. Can't wait for Simon to promote it.
Amazing work George! And great presentation from Simon as always.
I've been waiting for the next episode, I think a neat crime to cover would be the 1985 robbery of the Mexican museum of anthropology
That was a cracking good script George! Definitely would buy that book!
As a Cantonese speaker, Mut Wah is actually pretty accurate without the pronunciation guide, so you're doing alright Fact Boi.
I think George just felt bad for Simon and went with the Mandarin pronunciation instead lol
Amazing episode! Write that dang book, George!! I can't wait to buy it if you do!
Write the book man, also having Simon make an audio book out of it would be a great idea!
Came here to say exactly this, setting an Audible credit aside just in case 😁
George you knocked this one out of the park mate! Well done! Will absolutely buy this book when it's written 👍
Whistler! Thanks again for all of your content that we love so much! Keep up the great work mate, love hearing all the tangents and family updates. Cheers!
The beginning of literally every single casual criminalist "Hello, thank you to Jen and today's writer - this script is thick"
One day, Simon won't think the script is thick and it will be a truely revolutionary day
Definitely love a nice robbery or less violent crime filled episode. I do need to lear not to watch these before bed.
George please do write that book. I’d love to hear more about some of the other crimes he committed and / more from the officers.
I hope Simon paid a bonus and/or a tip after realizing how much effort you put in. Amazing job.
I've been binging CC for about a week and i have to say, I love George.
One more murder story and Simon is going back to Biographics videos full time... greatly appreciate all the great work you do! #The Actual History Channel
