Cicada Killer Wasp

It’s the time of year when cicadas emerge from their underground larval chambers to look for mates. It can be dangerous though. This is a Cicada Killer Wasp. Cicada killer wasps use cicadas to place in their burrows as a food source for their own larvae, who hatch out of eggs. They are not aggressive toward humans, but they have an impressive stinger to paralyze the cicada. Because the cicada is much larger than the wasp, she appears to be using both her wings and legs to drag the cicada… up a tree? Why would they do that if the burrow is in the ground? The cicada will use the height of the tree to give her the ability to fly a longer distance with such heavy prey!
