    I stumbled upon these from an "amish" stove fan. The ceramic Peltier plates. I wanted to make a system that could house them, heating one side on my woodstove, and cooling thee other with a radiator outside. Making voltage. I began a solar project instead. Maybe its something you could build Robert. Thank you. Cheers from East Coast US.

      The 5 GBP cost on that is what makes it prohibitively expensive currently to do that, in addition that you realistically can't series connect the TECs in above a 3S configuration without diminishing returns; RMS has done multiple videos on them, and I hope he won't mind, but Tech Ingredients' channel has also done various experiments.

      @@stevenfaber3896 That was the exact limitation i was getting confronted with. There was just no way to get the output i needed. Luckily they were cheap so it wasnt a huge loss. Wonder if a controller could correct the voltage output? ... probably talking a crazy small amperage at that point and not worth the hassle. Alternative?
      LITHIUM Lifepo4 specifically with a CC and solar array. Lol
      I almost didnt click bc of fear of the title, but i said cmon. Its RMS.

      You should look into a Stirling engine for your endeavour. That will be a far better usage of the heat coming from your stove. They are actually fairly easy to make if you are a bit handy and there are some interesting videos bobbing around on RUclips using that principle to generate electricity. The Stirling engine is even explained on this particular channel if I am not mistaken.

    This is exactly what graphite lines of differing impedance does when they meet. Rob has a video on it already and how to make it. Anyone that is interested in this subject should also check it out. By the way through some self experimentation I have found that not only is a conjunction of differing graphite lines TPV it is also somewhat PPV as well. So it could be used both day and night time for energy production. Thanks Rob much appreciated!

    I remember a few years ago someone said they made a thermal battery that had thermal Pv cells in it and would convert the 2000c heat from the liquid metal into electricity. The only.issue was that it needed iridium, which made it too expensive for the market.

    I have some small USB LED lights, a whole unit with 3 3mm x 3mm LEDs on it is about 1cm x 2cm x 2mm in size.
    I just took a few of them outside in the sun and put the voltmeter across each of them. All read between 2.0 - 2.3V each.
    Pretty cool.

    Thanks for the video... my big issue with the night time solar version is that the media really went overboard with excitement. As you mention, In reality the power output is minuscule at night... 50 mW / square meter or less.
    However, you mentioned heat sinks! So, yes, I think what is more important is the idea of a low cost heat sink ... If you recall, there are "white paints" that can act to lower the temperature of a surface. If you paint the back of the solar cell with this paint, you will improve the efficiency of the cell when it matters most... during sun light.
    For example: Assume a solar panel produces 400 watts and has a temperature coefficient of -0.3% ... If the temperature is 5 degrees C warmer, we lose (0.3/100) * 5 = ~ 6 watts of power.
    That 6 watts is fairly significant vs 50mW. So, just by cooling the panel 5 degrees C in daylight, we gain much more than night time production by ~ 100x more production in power vs the night production.

      It has a way to go that's for sure and i do remember the white paint, two versons i think - one uses densly packed calcium carbonate and the other barium sulfate - but they are trialling production versions so it should be interesting lol

    I sometimes think green energy is being overthought. I visited Finch’s Foundry at Sticklepath, near Okehampton, Devon last weekend. Not a foundry at all, but a forge that used to produce around 400 edge tools a day of various types. All powered by water wheels. Of course you have to have a reliable supply, but of course what you use is returned to the river, and could be used by hundreds further along. No pollution, virtually no noise. I don’t think we’ve advanced at all in the last two centuries.

    Is the solar cell responding to heat? or is it responding to the infra-red radiated from the heated aluminium?

    Will it make power if you put sound up to it?
    Is the oscilloscope and the diode sensitive enough to turn all the lights off and see if it can detect any light coming OUT of your eyeballs?
    If you hold an ice cube to it what happens with the voltage?
    Since you got all the stuff handy I figured I would ask.

    Now that’s interesting.
    So you can generate light by applying voltage to a solar cell.
    With a bit a clever wiring you could make your solar roof make images / spell out words.

    This could be improved by a sand bed on the back of the diode. Sort of a sand battery heated by the sun in the day and holding the heat into the night creating the heat difference.

    The problem is that heat reduces the performance of solar PV panels so you need to cool the panel and store it elsewhere then return it at night & that will reduce the efficiency.

    It's crazy how we think about light & dark but we couldn't have the universe without light. Light is connected to energy, heat, magnetism, electrostatic charge. All these things create the building blocks to form nearly everything in our universe. It really shows the important impact of even the Slightest differences in a given environment. Temperature, density, pressure, charge, etc. Etc.

      The universe already existed without light. It was called the Cosmic Dark Ages, the time from 380,000 years after the Big Bang until about 1 billion years after when the first stars formed. It was dark for hundreds of millions of years.

    Have you done any research into a "super stove" concept that's maybe on kickstarter? Don't have a link but there's a video out on youtube also.
    Seems that it's a similar concept but using heat from combustion to do it.

    You could probably use inside of a compost pile, too.
    Maybe generate off body heat?
    Thinking about a shoe insole made of this.
    Or inside a black orb in the sunshine... A black orb filled with water??? 🤔

      you do need temperture difference so you would have to arrange it so one side was kept cool - but if you did that - then yes that would work

    A while back, you did stuff on making a graphene photo voltaic, and had mentioned you could do a thermovoltaic in a similar manner. It seemed from that that the particle inclusion( you did zinc sulfide nanos for the photo) would be better as something else, and I would wonder what your guess would be for that? maybe nichhrome, as its electric/heat works well?

    This episode lead me to following though experiment
    Let's assume following setup:
    There is a water heat(or cold) buffer
    Durring day heat pump uses electricity from PV to cool down house and heat up water.
    After sunset water from buffer is pumped to panels covered with IR reflective paint and LDPE, and uses Peltier's to harvest some of energy.
    Would Peltier's even power pumps? If so how much would I be able to power with remaining power. How would look in comparison to dumping heat from heat pump to atmosphere and collecting some energy from PV in batteries.

      I think the first part of your experiment is essentially a hybrid solar PV-T panel. Look into those and see how you feel they work. I got really excited when Robert began the video because I plan on using some PV-Ts on a tracker in a temperate climate. However, when I got to the rather paltry energy density figures my enthusiasm waned. I think there are probably applications where the scheme you are describing would work. I just think that in areas where cooling or heating is required it makes more sense to keep the either hot or cold water and exchange their BTUs before the inlet side of a heat pump directly. So cool how this video got everyone's gears turning!

      @@johnlambert7405 My idea does not include collecting heat from sunlight. But it seems like a nice extension.
      Idea was that it would be device for remote location on deserts. They need cold place during day, they are poor so PV and heat pump has to as cheap/as small as possible. Low temperature and hight specific heat capacity of water would increase heat pumps efficiency. If Peltier's would be effective enough to provide energy for pumps and lights on evenings it would be a great win - no need to provide batteries.

    Peltier devices, stirling engines, and thermophotovoltaics are fascinating to me.
    The fact that for centuries now we have used heat to produce mechanical energy through steam turbines seems so archaic to me.
    Direct heat to electricity in a workabke way us the biggest leap in energy production possible that many people would do well to tackle or improve upon with material sciences. If we ever crack fusion, thermophotovoltaic plates in the chamber, along with som traditional photovoltaics with the expekled light, would be the best way to capture that energy in a simple way. To heat water or other fluids to turn a turbine can accomplish a cooling loop, and can be made more efficient than TPV panels, but is extremely complex, and extreme complexity is very expensive.
    If Fusion ever produces so much more than its inputs (accounting for the energy used to run the inputs in the first place and not just the enregy actually added) then TPV could directly use that energy and keave all the complexity to the reaction devices, whehter it be lasers, magnetic field generstors etc. As of now the piping and eputing of fluid around the device would interfere with much of the other mechanisms. TPV paneles theoretically would just need leads in and out.

    I wonder if the heat to visible light effect of a (Coleman) gas mantle could improve the efficiency of your heated aluminum foil on solar cell experiment. Just use the thorium free mantles😊

    If running a voltage across a solar cell creates an IR emission, surely IR would also be the optimal capture. Have we been looking at solar wrongly? Maybe a 'white' LED would capture more actual sunlight.

      Light is spread and a typical PV array is huge to be effective. Heat from sunlight is also spread, though certain latitudes get more than others. Wind relates a lot to heat, but some places get more because of flow off the oceans. Heat however, is also a byproduct of industrial processes and that can be used. Heat also causes water to evaporate, rise, and then fall again as rain. Water drainage thus becomes gravity power and small turbines can capture some of that. Larger turbines are too tied to the water sources to be perfect everywhere (despite being super efficient). So, it may not be created or destroyed, but capturing it requires some ingenuity and converting it to electricity is also a bit tricky.

    (beside not over!! only light and ir).
    The result was slighly more output then in sunlight.

    I wonder if combining this with the ultra white "cooling" paint could increase efficiency. The paint works by radiating heat in a frequency that goes directly out of the atmosphere.

    but im up to 100 salvaged vape pen batteries, i made a 4s pack with them and accidendtly shorted them and the one got really hot the kaptop tape around it started to melt, surprisingly none of the cells died even the hot one recovered, no gasing or anything either, the heat from the short melted the solder joints preventing anymore harmful discharge i suspect, but id hate to be around one that goes thermal runaway, probably best to prepare a containerfor that sintuation, i really wish there was a safer chemistry, heating solar panels? sure, lets dig a hole to the magma below, free energy.

    Why does even the smallest plant need thousands of leaves?
    It is an amalgamation of small energies.
    Such a contraption is necessary to capture such smatterings of energy from a star millions of miles away.
    Life found a way, certainly we can follow in its footsteps.

    Hi! Another very nice video. Have you heard of "Perovskite Solar Cells"? The material appears simple enough, very high efficiency, and cost efficient enough that we should investigate this material for DIY home solar cells! What do you think? Could you make some perovskite material?

      Been under investigation since the 80s with a break until say 2012, U of T has a lab going hard on this, Ted Sargent if memory serves.
      I remember the shift back to perovskites vividly as I was working on dye sensitized solar at the time (mainly etching titanium dioxide nano arrays) and that whole field died when perovskites hit the mainstream again.
      Doing it at home is possible but the chemicals are a touch on the nasty side. I wouldn't want a layman doing it simply from disposal concerns.

      A perovskite solar cell is not easy to manufacture(for DIY). And they degrade much quicker.

    Are you sure its the heat that's doing it and not the light somehow getting through the aluminum? I thought heat reduced the output of pv cells . Why don't you try something hot that isn't glowing with light???

      Light isn’t shining through the aluminum foil. People put it over their windows to block the sun and sleep during the day.

    Heat pump creates more heat than it consumes electricity. Only if we could tap into that extra energy and convert it to usable electricity, we could make a self feeding closed loop :)

    Please please please get a better camera. My eyes hurt (really) watching you. This is because I am wearing glasses, but your video is blurred so my eyes tend to try and focus (which they can't) and that hurts. On the other hand, yo make so many video's, everyone would benefit from it.
    You know I am a long time follower and supporter, I don't make silly comments.
