I agree that Management level should get their sleeves rolled up and roll some barrels. I am a Chef for a national chain for kitchen and carvery, over the last twenty years I have worked in all types of kitchen, large and small, and most of them insist that new members, especially managers and supervisors, spend two weeks in the kitchen so they know the products intimately

I'd argue this should happen in all industries; too much management are clueless about the core business they're in charge of.

Ralfy's got to be right about Bruichladdich. I've yet to see one older than 10 years old, which is the starting point for most distilleries' age stated presentations. Bruichladdich has to be sitting on a loch of whisky, no? Cheers!

I remember going to Tullibardine about 9 years ago and it was an incredibly small operation. Only four people running the place and it was literally the fork lift driver who showed me and my GF around and they had a small dusty tasting room. It's a rather obscure whisky as in you would struggle to find it in most Scottish pubs. I drove past the place a couple of month ago and it looks like they have built a state of the art visitor centre. I think the days of going to a distillery, knocking on the door and getting a half straight from the barrel are sadly over. Too many suits are involved
Their Pure Pot was pretty lethal

Have passed it a few times recently and always wanted to visit, but never had the time, and I'm the driver so couldn't enjoy any drams anyway. Think its pretty available in supermarkets, picked one up on offer for barely £20 the other year iirc and I really enjoyed it.

Thank you for passionately sharing your viewpoint Ralfy! A question for you - how do master distillers stay reasonably sober on the job? I imagine they have to nose and taste a myriad of samples every day? Can they stay sober? Is alcoholism an occupation hazard? There has to be some secret because we see guys like Jim McEwan doing the job consistently for decades. A topic for an Extra maybe?

Ralfy. You always amaze me with the amount of knoledge that you are able to share. On such an elocuent and entretaining way. Socials, economics, craftmanship, perceptions, value, provinence, greedines, and much more. I do really appreciate to see an example like you on social platforms. Real love for others work. Interested on sharing knowledge, not alcoholism. Showing that real appretiation takes time and effort. A gentlement to everyone. Then a friend to those who deserve. Oh, so many thinks on such a humble presentation. Thanks a lot for all your hard work. Cheers.

It’s an interesting perspective you have on Bruichladdich Ralfy. It never occurred to me before. Since getting into whisky about 5 years ago I have bought a handful of BLaddich bottlings and have never understood the love. It was my opinion that the corporation that bought out the dream team saw the Gin boom and focused their attention there with the whisky forced to make room on the stage. A visit to the Laddie shop pre-COVID only reinforced my assertions. They really could be where Springbank are now - standing shoulder to shoulder with them but chose to go after a faster buck, let the whisky tread water and let the likes of Kilchoman and Bunnahabhain blow past them and be the ones to give the Ardbeg a few sleepless nights.

I love it when you just go off! 😀
The bummer thing about being in the US is our completely retarded import laws. We are at the mercy of whatever Diageo, Sazerac, or whichever focus group driven investment vehicle wants to market here when it comes to any alcohol product made in any other country. On the other hand, some of the local distillers (I'm in Washington state) are producing some very interesting products. On a few of different road trips over the last couple of years, the wife and I have discovered some truly wonderful whiskys (and whiskeys) coming from distillers in Montana and Arizona. Since most of them are bourbon or rye type spirits, I feel a little left out as I prefer malt whisky or mezcal.

It's funny that people think scotch is an old man's drink. I think it's a sophisticated man's drink. Been on many a distillery tour, I live in Canada so it's been the Canadian whisky distillers in Ontario mostly. That said I first tried actual scotch at my wedding a few years ago, I wish I knew what the bottle was, it was smooth, smoky and just overall lovely, I know the bartender was saying it was a $300 bottle so I'd imagine it was something probably fairly old. I have tried some 20+ year old stuff and that's what seems to come closest. That said the price tag for a new scotch enthusiast is a little much. I've started the scotch part of my liquor cabinet with Glenmorangie 10, Glenfiddich 12 and my special bottle (not opened until the racehorse my wife and I own wins this year) is the 21 year old Gran Reserva from Glenfiddich which was given to me as a gift by my FIL when he found out I enjoyed scotch (he doesn't drink much but will have the odd scotch he's a fan of Chivas Regal)
    Cheers from Canada Ralphy!

Laddie 10 is no longer sold. It went off the market 3 years ago. You can still find quite a bit of Laddie 8 about, especially in airports. The various minor bottlings of organic and specialized barley whiskeys are slowly being sold off and not replaced. It seems like the new owners want to narrow the focus in a big way.

Still kicking myself I never saw that they would drop the age statements and leaving only the "classic". Sure the classic can be a nice dram but when its just a blend of 4-13 year olds, costs $110 a bottle, and every batch is different I look else where.

How can you wax poetic over older Bruichladdichs, yet assign conspiracy theory profit motives to your idea of the distillery hoarding casks, instead of giving them credit for wanting to put out a quality product? Your ideas on "corporate multi-nationals" ignore every basic tenet of limited resources and supply and demand.
