I was working at a warehouse a few miles away from 63rd and Wallace when I read a small article in the Trib, sometime in the early/mid 90s about this place. Then I found out it was only half the story. I don't think it was discovered until the trial for all his other reprehensible crimes, which apparently was bigger than OJ. When they did discover the building, they found a large crematorium in the basement and a chute that ran down there from an upper floor, like a giant slide that he would drop bodies down, so he wouldn't transport them halfway across the city to dispose of them. 63rd St. is far south side, Fullerton is 2400 north, around 11 miles through the city to transport a cadaver. (fun fact, my high school was on Fullerton, twice I've lived within a stone's throw of it and for the last dozen years I lived a little over a block south of Fullerton) But about 15-20 years ago I was watching a program on WTTW about the 'Murder Castle' and the post office that was partially built on its foundation, and although I don't typically believe ghost stories, the employees were talking about some pretty freaky shit going on down in that basement. Still, I don't think I'd be as scared to go down there as I would be about fucking around in Englewood.
Just chanched upon this and blew my mind to realize I lived on the other side of the viaduct - the other side of the wall east of the post office. I lived there in the late 50's across the street where the Aldi's is was a old cinema movie theater that was enormous, at that time it was no longer used as for movies but was converted into a "Community" department store, similar to a budget Target etc.. the theater was called the Southtown.
After reading The Devil and the White City, I went driving around the south side of Chicago looking for the site. Unfortunately, I became disoriented by the modern buildings and therefore unsuccessful (I did see the post office, however!). The story i heard one of his victims survived and somehow managed to get to the police. But they didn't follow up on the investigation for whatever reason .When the police went to the murder castle and found the persons clothes in the basement by a furnace apparently about to be disposed of. & after the place was searched they found bones and other things buried in the floor and stored behind false walls.
I went there when I visited Chicago. My kids were teens; they thought I was nuts, but I was curious and I've always been interested in true crime and serial killers. Chilling to think of what happened there but there seems to be a more peaceful energy there now.
I lived two blocks south of the "castle" back in "78" I knew it was there and would drive by and get the creeps LOL. Great vid as always. Much Love and Respect to my favorite Duo. Peace.
Excellent editing once again. HH Holmes murder spree began long before the Murder Castle. He was a charismatic con man who murdered men, women and children.
I remember hearing a couple years back ...well, maybe more than a couple of years. That Hollywood was going to make a movie with Robert Pattinson , playing H.H. Holmes in a movie.? I remember reading it in a magazine that I still have actually. I just have to dig it out. I think it is time magazine and the entire magazine was dedicated to American horror stories. If there were any time for Hollywood to make a movie about H.H. Holmes? It would be now! Wow, Y'all are brave! Going to Chicago in a bad area! All of the crime that has taken place in Chicago Is scary enough! Great video! 😊
One of my favorite books of all time is The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson. It tells the story of H.H. Holmes and the Chicago World's Fair and is an unforgettable read. As always, loved the latest Grim Life Collective video. All of your videos are well-documented and interesting as hell to watch. Thanks, guys!
I agree, the book is fascinating! Erik Larson did an amazing job of bringing to life, through his vivid imagery, a wonderous fete, the Chicago Worlds Fair, and the horrific nightmare of H.H. Holmes and his murder castle 🏰.
Agreed! Erik Larson tells stories like nobody's business and Devil in the White City is my favorite! 🤓 Great video and commentary, Michael and Jessica - thanks so much!

That is an awesome video Grimm Life! I have always been intrigued by H H Holmes and I work for USPS so I wish I worked at that office so I could see the basement. Lol. Thank you!
@Grimmlifecollective , This video was AWESOME! I love walking history with you, the good or the bad, it must be remembered. Please keep matching up photos of the site from then to now. That is so fantastic. If you and Jessica had a television show I would definitely be watching. You stated Lizzie Borden in Fall River, Ma. started you on this incredible journey. This case and Lizzie actually have a connection. I am still trying to binge watch all of your videos. They fascinate me, educate me and horrify me at the same time.. You did a Lizzie Borden video from my birth city of Fall River, Ma. , another excellent video, so we can actually connect that video to this one in a macabre way. Lizzie Borden was found innocent in the summer of 1893 and spent a few weeks in Newport, RI. She wanted to go to the Chicago World's Fair so badly, some of her friends urged her to go before the fair closed so she was actually in Chicago at the World's Fair in the Fall of 1893 while H.H. Holmes was committing his horrendous murders. Two very famous murderers in the same city at the same time. Imagine that get together if they had met for tea? :-)
Brilliant job on this video!! I absolutely love the before and after photos u had included!! I truly love anything to do with history (*especially if it's creepy and dark...the darker the better lol) but you did a great job doing this video and narration!! ...I'm sure H.H.Holmes would be proud!!

What an awesome video!!! This was interesting and love how you put it together. Thank you for sharing this story and showing the pictures of before. I love what you guys do finding these places. I am so appreciative.
I'm always impressed with your storytelling abilities and your willingness to go onsite to show where things happened. Given your gift of storytelling, have you considered branching out to other things that qualify as Grimmlife? You live in California now, and that state is known for its gold rush and its native battles. Would you consider going out to the locations few people ever go to, to film the area and tell your viewers about what happened there? Lots of people lost their lives, and as you mentioned in this video, it's important to remember history good or bad. I think these places and the people who lost their lives there are worthy of remembrance. Regardless, you do a fantastic job. Keep up the great work!
The one story part of the Post Office building, to the left, uses part of the original "Castle" foundation. Over the years, some employees began to refuse to go down there. Once this was publicized, the USPS refused to let anyone down there anymore.
Very well produced and done. Appreciate the work you guys put into this. I've always wanted to know what stands in the place of mudget's old, "murder" house/Castle. Comparing and contrasting the original with present day really made this video awesome. There's not much on the actual real site as far as information goes which is why this one was awesome. Thanks again.
Thank you for the tour. Holmes was worse than anyone could imagine, as well as his greed for money. He married women for their money then killed them. One had a young daughter and when he killed her mother, he also killed the child and sold their skeletons to medical school, as he had done with other people he killed. I had read the non-fiction book "Devil in White City" by Erik Larsen that some of your commentors mention. The book details H.H. Holmes' crimes, but also describes some Chicago history, the challenges of building the 1892-1893 World's Fair (The White City) with first Ferris Wheel, the main architect of White City's fair, and the detective who hunted down Holmes. Fascinating and informative book - I recommend it.
I like how you say legend of HH Holmes. Because most of the story we hear isn't completely true. There is an expert on Holmes. He does tours and written books about him. His tour company is Mysterious Chicago
Such a really interesting video, there is rumor that HH Holmes is jack the ripper and came from England , Never been to that location in Chicago really cool to see what it was
Excellent storytelling ☠️! Love how you match up the photographs with the modern locations. Also enjoy how much enthusiasm and appreciation you have for subject matter being discussed. Great video ☺️!

Damn I wasn't expecting this to be that good. You explained things I didn't know. Most channels just tell the story but I never knew it was torn down or that he even had another business. Great job 👍
I loved this. Please keep them coming, I subscribed!
What an awesome video!!! This was interesting and love how you put it together. Thank you for sharing this story and showing the pictures of before. I love what you guys do finding these places. I am so appreciative.
Another great video! Obssessed with history ,as wel- the good, the bad , and the ugly and this channel covers it all! Lots of love from LAS VEGAS! ❤❤
Thank you for another amazing video
The one story part of the Post Office building, to the left, uses part of the original "Castle" foundation. Over the years, some employees began to refuse to go down there. Once this was publicized, the USPS refused to let anyone down there anymore.
🙌🙌🙌 Great Videos Keep the great work
Very well produced and done. Appreciate the work you guys put into this. I've always wanted to know what stands in the place of mudget's old, "murder" house/Castle. Comparing and contrasting the original with present day really made this video awesome. There's not much on the actual real site as far as information goes which is why this one was awesome. Thanks again.
Thank you for the interesting trip!
That's a great book and very intense read. That ferris wheel and the colossal size of it was crazy.
Love this. You guys rock. All of your videos are just excellent. Good job.
I like how you say legend of HH Holmes. Because most of the story we hear isn't completely true. There is an expert on Holmes. He does tours and written books about him. His tour company is Mysterious Chicago
Great video.Ive seen practically everything on this bloke. But this is the 1st I have seen someone go to where it was 👍
Such a really interesting video, there is rumor that HH Holmes is jack the ripper and came from England ,
Never been to that location in Chicago really cool to see what it was
Great Video! I too love history and enjoy tracking down and doing before and after photos. Keep up the great work!
Excellent storytelling ☠️!
Love how you match up the photographs with the modern locations. Also enjoy how much enthusiasm and appreciation you have for subject matter being discussed. Great video ☺️!
More than you know, We all appreciate the time and effort y'all make to share with us all of the amazing places. Thank you so much, and congratulations on all of your success!
Just another incredible adventure through history. Thank you for your incredible work. Always very impressive.
I forgot about H.H. Holmes murder castle was in Chicago!!! Awesome video guys!!!✌💚👻🐈⬛
I heard Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to play him in a movie about his life. Glad you guys stayed safe and thanks for the newest video!
Yes I heard that as well. He definitely would be great in it
@@odalisgonzalez6875 I had also heard that they were considering Johnny Depp for the role. But this was before all of his personal and legal issues.
Leo did Shutter Island...id be surprised if he does do another type of movie like that
@@robertschuster3528 Johnny Depp would be great in this role as well
I freaking love your videos!!!!! Thank you for another awesome one!!!!
Great video! I worked in Englewood around 18 years ago and always stopped to think what happened there. Always thought the post office was where the mansion stood but judging by that pic, the empty lot seems correct.
