One of the cleverest little hints that it would turn out this way was waaay in the beginning:
At the reception they all attend in what I think was the very first episode, the piano plays a song from Mozart's "The Magic Flute" - the (omitted) lyrics to which are sung by a bird-catcher who boasts about his prowess in luring and trapping birds - and in a later verse he also sings about wishing to catch and lock up girls.
I didn't think anything of it at the time - but upon this amazing reveal (beautifully acted by Kristen Bell and the always wonderful Ted Danson), it was one of the first things I thought of, and I was just speechless. This clever, ever-so-subtle hint made it even more amazing. Bravo!

Also in “The Magic Flute”, the Queen of Night is introduced as a good character, but later reveals herself to be evil all along.

one of the first hints i thought of for the twist is when way in episode 1 when micheal is giving his speech he says "everyone here.... is a good person." and when he pauses there he looks directly at eleanor and smiles.

Do you remember questioning it during the first episode? Seeing your suspicion fade & knowing the reveal would still blindside you has been one of the great treats of watching you watch this series.

And yet there are SO many hints. A rewatch of the season reveals them once you know where to look (actually, there are hints for everything, up to and including the end of the series, although of course a simple rewatch having seen only S1 won't make them obvious).

this show uses the concept of "Hell is Other People" which the originally story where the quote is from is about 3 people in hell that were perfect to torture each other. but this show takes a more optimistic view of people that turns the quote to Help is Other People.

    • @PariView

I like how the show gives that optimistic perspective.

Been waiting for you to get here. You might think that after this amazing twist, the show wouldn't have nowhere else to go. But you'd be surprised, they draw it out and then stick the ending. But they never insult your intelligence, no matter how stupid their jokes are.
Ultimately, this show is about moral philosophy. And as somebody who is kind of a geek on that, Indian philosophy is a leader. I don't know how much of that y'all have studied, but this show is a worldwide walkthrough. Binging it should be everybody's 101 class.

The clues to the plot twist I founded
•A perfect system confuses 2 people in one neiborhood
•Frozen yogurt instead of icecream like cmon man
•Tahani being the most selfish human ever
    •Any Chidi's flashback
•The fact that Janet can not talk about the bad place, just scare Eleanor about it
•A house not made like is for someone else, but made with things Eleanor hates
•Michael has has a evil smile when he tells Eleanor she is in the good place
•Michael left the top with the scores in a place where Tahani could find it
•Michael kicking a dog to the sun in front of Tahani
•When Chidi wanted to tell Eleanor he love her Vicky interrupts them in that exact moment
•Jantet button being so accesible and the big screen
•That couple that came when Chidi and Eleanor fought
•Michael forcing Chidi to make something different with his life when he doesn't want to
There are more but I don't remember them rn

It really says something about Micheal’s charisma that he kicked a puppy - the signature act of needless cruelty - and half of us just shrugged it off at the time.

Another hint to Michael’s involvement - up until this episode, you only see him when he’s near at least one of the four humans… when he’d _need_ to have that well-meaning guise on.
Also, fun fact, the synopses for Season 2 episodes were being written while Season 1 was being filmed. So those writers knew what they were dong… and which of your expectations to swerve away from.

When it comes to the start of a show; I think people have different expectations.. Sure you can't expect to be emotionally enthralling from the get-go; Which is why I Think that the pure "reaction" based viewing isn't really good to shows and that if there WOULD be one way that is correct it is to accept that the START is specifically a start. Then the start can actually BE somewhat.. Riveting (I think the idiom is).. The thing is.. You are watching the "set-up".. You has to be introduced to the premisses in a way that sound plausible.. also the characters has to be presented in a way that is "easy listening".. Perhaps in itself not engaging, but seriously if you instead think of it as you getting the introduction to the trope then you may get excited about what CAN happen.. And if you look at the concept of "Afterlife".. Where.. Someone happened to end up at the wrong place and want to hide it, and the chaos that may ensue.. If you look at it from the perspective of an introduction that IS kind of an exciting thing. You won't know if they were good enough to MAKE it exciting but the potential was always there... It's kind of like how people talk about Christmas.. The presents under the tree "as they are" are just boxes with slightly funny colourful paper.. but the POTENTIAL.. makes it exciting.. and sometimes the expectation of finding out is where the excitement lies, and when all answers are all in it's not really exciting but you will enjoy the present. (this is even more true about "Thrillers" where they primarily try to use most of the film to build suspense)..
Not saying this to complain, but.. because I think some people may get more positive things out of life if they can appreciate how approaches and perception changes things.. (and yes; I am QUITE a lot like Chidi; As in way too verbose, trying to be too detailed, taking too long to get to the point and in the end often contradicting myself as well. but when you get through the boring part you MAY actually have been enriched by it; Example: Everything within this parenthesis)

You kind of guessed before episode two this was The Bad Place but trust me it only goes up from here, as improbable as it seems - the chemistry between the cast only grows. This show is genius but also just lighthearted entertainment that might just send you into some existential crises from time to time.

CW's The Flash is an overproduced soap opera. It does however drop in writing quality far before it does effects budget, atleast if you notice that even abit of the first season is atleast abit daft, if held to high-average standards. Think about the Warp Zone videos on 23% - 32% smarter Marvel movies.
