If you can find flat bottom and lid containers, you can make the holes with a soldering iron (through both at the same time) and they will join on their own, no need for the silicone. Having the bottom and lid fused makes it strong enough to remain a flat drip tray if you go that way as well.
Thanks for the video, just as someone else mentioned the filter floss maybe better under the foam as you want the muck to go through coarse then fine mechanical filtration.
Nice job! One comment i would set the filter media at the bottom to avoid the filter clogging up. This way the bigger particles will be retained in the previous containers without clogging the mechanical filter. Cheers
Good idea. Better to arrange them horizontally (and modify the pipe position accordingly) or at least the one filled with bioring should be not at the most bottom. The reason is bioring or bioball need oxygen to work properly. Sorry for my english.
I am about to make one ...only that I would be using plastic drawers set . I curious if I can make water drizzle via small holes between compartment . Will it be beneficial
Everything's good, except a missing overflow and a note that the water pumping volume should match the water draining from the filter. Else it'll cause a mess without an overflow valve
Itu saya rasa selang penyambung antar box tupperware kurang besar....jadi air cenderung menggenang dulu... Harusx air lgsg habis turun ke bawah ... Tp idenya oke sih 👍✌😄

Great overhead filter mate, cheap and easy to build plus heaps of oxygenation to keep both bacteria and fish happy. I built mine not long ago but it is not a trickle filter. 🤙🤙🤙
Hey BiTEN!! THis is really cool idea!! May i add something more to help? Adding a cup/glass on the hoses at the top. but leaving the bottom of the glass/cup above the bottom of the dish so air can get in/threw! :)! This will make the entire chamber drain into the one below, and filter the water completely! :)! I really like your idea! Thank you for sharing!
Keep up the good work. I’ve made a number of dumps DIY. If I have one comment it would be don’t be sloppily. If your coming into the top filter box from the side lay your filter pads in vertical.
Can u make a video where single big filter ....for 2 or 3 tanks ... because i have 3. But i want one filter ... because all the tanks are in my bed room ....i want to use less space
crush corals will be good for blackish water fish like molly. it can also make the water ph level high, so i don’t need to add salt. for longer use small holes in the corrals will be home for beneficial bacteria 👌
Useful video, can you please tell me I want to make a filter for my 250ltr tank, which pump is needed for that? And watt? Inlet & outlet pipe dimension remain same for that? Waiting for your fruitful reply.

I ask you ..because It seems that I need some PUMP..something like that... Than you for yours obs.. Best
course mechanical filtration first, then your fine mat and flip your top tray around 180 so the water has to travel across the media to drain to the next level.
Awesome filter man. Did it plug at the top and overfill though? I’m worried the sponge will get full of crap and overflow. Other then that it would be awesome to have. I got all the parts needed. Just leery on the overflowing on top...
Hey hi!!! I have one question?? Can I use the same filter method in saltwater means it's working or not working. Y I'm asking this means I have no sump so only I'm asking ya. But I more interested in saltwater aquarium. What are the fishes I gonna to buy means clown fish, blue damshell, Gobi, yellow tang and butterfly fish is this fish are suitable for this filter. Kindly reply me I'm waiting for your reply. Have a good day bro
Nice DYI mate. Tho I suggest to use coral frags for cichlids only. The amount of calcium that comes from corals is not beneficial for any other fish than cichlid type. On the other hand you can always use aquarium silicone since is totally fish safe 100% unlike that one you used. And third, you can always apply silicone on button and middle media canister (in this case that the sponge is on top) since they aint gonna be washed and make it even safer to leaks. And if you dont wanna have the canister on top of the tank you can use another flexible hose and plug on the side inatead and put the canister somewhere else. Again, awesome job. I might be taking your invention and make it bigger for my tanks. Maybe a 100 gallons media filter or so
Fernando Banchs thanks for the comment. i just used crush coral because i think it aged enough for using it more than 2yrs in my tank and it won't raise a high ph level anymore. Also i just forgot the calcium deposit that a dead coral can produce trough time.
Depends on your tap water. In the US it is common to have chlorine in the water, here in germany it is not. Wo only have chlorine in the water if there are problems with germs and that rarely happens.
This seems easy to DIY! Thank you for sharing. I have a question though. In your setup, isn't the water filter sucking up the "dirty" water? In the long term, will it damage the water filter?
Good job on it, i enjoy the diy aspect. One thing though proofread the text before upload. A couple of grammatical errors as well as typos. It happens and don't worry, being told any problems only helps to correct and better.

Actually have used this setup before. Won't recommend it tho. If you are anything like me and fill tanks as full as possible, this is a bad concept when power outages happen. You can actually just install baffles inside the tank on one side with an internal overflow and use a pump to return water. Allot safer. Looks better than ugly overhead sumps when done right. And even if it leaks.....so what. Its inside the tank. Havn't moved back since I started to do it correctly and you can actually use plastic for baffles.
I’m curious if something like this would work for my (apx) ten gallon barrel pond outside? Everything else seems to larger for a small ten gallon barrel pond.
How is the effectiveness of the filter as the only sponge filters worked perfectly on this project as the drain pipe is in same height as the inlet pipe the water escapes without any media interaction . As I've seen water bypassed with crushed media and ceramic rings too. Please improvise the design as ine inlet pipe must touch the bottom of the container from then water must rise to the outlet
Alex T i think it depends on the size of your aquarium. I only use a small submersible pump for this because my aquarium is 8gal only or you can just make a bigger one
