I'd love to see a full 15 video series on construction documents like you mentioned in the video. I run my own solo practice and finally made the switch to Revit after being a lifelong AutoCAD user. Since I don't have coworkers, I've used videos like your to learn tips and tricks and see how other people use the software. Thanks for creating these videos! The modern kitchen renovation series was great and this was even better!

Thank you for the roof tip! Using an underlay and then the line work tool to see the roof overhead!! I just modeled it as detail lines which were then wrong when I made a change. I will definitely be doing it this way from now on!

When i worked in high end design built, we modeled every single component for construction. Was pretty crazy when i went into traditional Firm that not alot of firms do that and rely heavily on 2D Drafting view. I started modelign alot of custom trusses etc in our architectural models which in turn helped structural engineers know exactly what we want.
100% the more you model the better!!! All day long!!!
Great video, I recently designed a barn with a basement which was tricky for the construction drawings! Love the layout of the drawings too, great job. I'll be recording my next barn conversion project as they are very impressive! I always like your style of videos.

Another amazing video, to your point about using the live model for detail sections, I found that constraining 2d elements such as insulation and top/bottom plates to the geometry works pretty well too as when things adjust those items for the most part will adjust appropriately too, still requires a QA but should reduce some detailing rework.
Yes! The more model elements the better! It’s a fine balance between effort to model and maintain… if you have the time to model more, it’s always worth it!!!

So if you have the Revit model and you produce all the 2D detailing because you haven't, for example modelled certain elements like maybe rafters, and you then amend the model, changing rafters etc, all the 2D detailing will need to be updated as well? If so, looks like it worth modelling everything first time.

Thanks for sharing process, tips & tricks. I'm wondering is it better to use detail item tags for annotating or just the simple text?
I used the two ways, but I think the first one is quite smart if the template is good enough.
What do you think about this?
As I mentioned in the video …. Keynotes, tags, and smart detailing are all great ideas. When it comes to this small scale residential where I only do a few projects a year with one two wall sections in them … I just use simple text. Putting in place a system for smarter detail tagging is 100% recommended by me! Lol
Hi jeff , just wanna to know ..hw u do or achieved and produced ur construction documentation drawings in ur practice ..do u link all ur Architecture structure and MEP files and started to do CD ..or u used the links file as only as a reference and started to draw traced over it with detail annotation , detail line and fill regions etc...I think its nice to have a videos' of ur series ..how the actual construction documentation works in a real world practice in revit ...Thank you cheers !!
It all depends on the project... For residential work it might all be in one model. For commercial work its usually by discipline.
Where do you callout the finishes notes on your elevations?
Usually just notes or keynotes on the elevations.

I find giving rough openings yields better results from framers around here …
Curious, do you print in color? I'm noticing you use a dark purple often for annotation items and view references. I like the visual fidelity when working in the model, helps my brain see what is what. However, we always print in a grayscale, so not sure how those may read in the end in that case.
Yes, I do! With only 5-8 sheets on projects of this size it is worth EVERY penny to have these printed in color. If I have to print in greyscale I have view templates to flip all the views to be better suited for that (shadows off, etc..).
@@TheRevitKid Got it. I'd love to print in color too, but sadly working on public schools in MA and CT we've always printed in grayscale. I've been told it's what is required 🙄
@@quiksilver723 it can get expensive with 100s of sheets lol! If those damn state reviewers would just allow digital 😡
I print in color all the time for schools we just require the contractor to have access to a color copy on the job site and most of them do this by keeping some sort of tablet with the superintendent and one color in the job trailer. They have all come around they baulked at first but they appreciate it now.
@@ryanstell4718 I’d think everyone would appreciate color drawings. Obviously it’s a big cost consideration if you’re physically printing them. But I feel like the more digital we get, the more of this we might be able to start doing.

Hi Jeff do you use your linework thick?
I use all kinds of linework weights... however, you may be noticing that I use the temporary thin lines one and off to work through details when the thick linework gets in the way,....
