Im 53 and my teenage years occurred in the 80s but Didi had an incredible impact on me. It felt so real and brought back memories of some painful years even from a different generation.
I've only been following your channel since 2024, but I've fallen in love with your reviews, horror and other genres alike. Thank you for opening my eyes to new films, the comments of other fans and their recommendations, it's definitely been a hi-light of 2024. Thank you all!
My favourite of the year was Strange Darling 1st, Wild Robot 2nd, Anora 3rd, Mads 4th, The Sweet East 5th, Hundreds of Beavers 🦫 6th, The Devil's Bath 7th, The Beast 8th, Nosferatu 9th, and Queer 10th. Your list is great as always Emma totally respect your list here, even though, we're pretty different but it's all good 😎👌🔥 we will see who wins in the awards coming up 😎👌🔥
I'm so pleased Red Rooms has been received so well. I saw it at the local film festival in 2023 and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. Had to wait over a whole year for it to become available to watch again! I think the fact there's no gore or anything whatsoever was a really smart move because, for me anyway, it was quite confrontational. Especially when they discuss the horrible details during the court proceedings and part of me wished I could see what they were talking about and then it made me realise that, even though I like to think I consume true crime content in a relatively ethical way (as much as that is possible), I'm actually not much different from some of the people in the film. It's really made me reassess my obsession. I could talk about this film forever probably, it's just so so good.
@@mattisimo I get what you mean. I quite liked the ending because her motives are still pretty unclear/unsettling and she just seemed quite unhinged, despite it all wrapping up neatly. It wouldn't have been as obvious if we didn't know that, even though she managed to get what she was after, she still acted weird af. so it was never really about solving the case/assuring a conviction.
@@arilith504 That's fair and I don't want to yuck your yum but the journey she took and what she gave up to get there seemed too personal for it to be simply a serial case that had nothing to do with her. It's a film I plan to revisit. Since we are chatting here - I am also a little off about the inclusion of the misdirect friend that went nowhere? What did you think that added to the plot?
My favorite movies of 2024 were "I Saw the TV Glow", "Poor Things", "The Substance" and "The Beast". All of them combine some slight horror movie vibes with drama, satire and surrealism. As a big fan of surreal lynchian and Kaufman-esque cinema it was a great year for me :)
Great list!!! I keep forgetting to check out Monster. Here’s my top 10 of the year (including horror as well) 10. A Different Man 9. My Old Ass 8. A Real Pain 7. Lisa Frankenstein 6. A Complete Unknown 5. Alien: Romulus 4. Civil War 3. The Substance 2. Challengers 1. Nosferatu
Ive been a lover of your channel for so long now, and just thought I would drop a comment and let you know how wonderful I think your videos are! You are so thoughtful and your commentary is always funny, lively and filled with so much insight! This Top 10 is pretty much perfect... shout out to "Red Rooms", a film I will probably never forget! And "Problemista" is a brilliant masterpiece that deserved a much better rollout from A24.
Thank you so much for sharing this list! I only saw a few of them, Anora (which I loved) and Civil War (which was a unique watch for sure!), but I'm going to be on the lookout for the rest - I DO remember seeing trailers for Problemista earlier in the year during the film festival season and I heard a lot of great things, but I'm not sure my local theater showed it where I live. My top 10 Non-Horror of the year are based on pure entertainment value and how I felt coming out of the theater: 10. Wicked 09. The Wild Robot 08. Saturday Night 07. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 06. Transformers One 05. Cabrini (nobody has mentioned this, so I'm probably the only one that liked it) 04. Lisa Frankenstein (maybe it's Horror, but I'm leaning to non-Horror) 03. The Beekeeper (strong recommend, it shocked me) 02. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 01. Deadpool & Wolverine
Really appreciated both of your lists (horror and non-horror), and love the diversity of opinions from others' lists. "Red Rooms" has been added to my watchlist, so thanks for the suggestion. HORROR 1. I Saw The TV Glow 2. A Quiet Place: Day One 3. Late Night With The Devil 4. Cuckoo 5. Speak No Evil 6. Smile 2 7. Heretic 8. Longlegs 9. Never Let Go 10. Immaculate/The First Omen (tie) NON-HORROR 1. Sometimes I Think About Dying 2. Inside Out 2 3. Problemista 4. We Live In Time 5. Perfect Days 6. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes 7. The Wild Robot 8. All Of Us Strangers 9. Thelma 10. Conclave (For context, I'm a former Perthian now living in Canada.)
Saint Maud was my favorite film the year it came out. Love Lies Bleeding was so different, I saw it at an early screening w a bunch of influencers who weren’t familiar with the director. I really enjoyed it!
All of Us Strangers was not only my favorite movie of last year, but it might just be my favorite movie period. Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott really did something special with that one. I will never stop thinking about it.
Thank you for the recommendations! I forgot about Problemista. I saw the trailer ages ago and thought it looked interesting (and I love Tilda Swinton).
I watched Anora for the first time on the 30th of December and it quickly snuck to the top of my favourites of last year. I was completely blown away by it.
Problemista buddies! 🥳it is in my top 10, too. Such a good and creative film. I was sad that I was the only person sitting in the theater when I went for the first showing :(. Also in my Top 10 are Anora, Monster (Kore-eda is my favourite director), Love Lies Bleeding, All of us Strangers and Didi. The Substance is also in there, as the only horror movie. So a good bit of overlap! And my list has Challengers ranked high.
@@spookyastronauts I was surprised, too. Monster and Didi didn't play here anywhere. And since this is Germany, it is always uncertain if we get to see movies that are playing in the undubbed version for a few showings, too. But for some reason the stars aligned for Problemista 🙂
I knew Problemista would be your #1, you raved about it in a wrap up or on Instagram or somewhere. It's so good! So creative, and such a good story about the struggles of immigration and trying to follow your dreams. Tilda Swinton needs another Oscar fot this one
I’ve been debating on watching Thelma and you’ve talked me into it. My grandma was attempted to be scammed in a similar fashion but she realized that it was a scam because none of her grandkids called her grandma she and my grandpa had a different nicknames her grandkids and great grandchildren, she was Nin. I thought Love Lies Bleeding was a great film and great performances by Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian and Ed Harris. I’m so gonna have to watch All of Us Strangers. I love Andrew Scott since he was Moriarty in Sherlock.
love the problemista love! one of those movies that i was trying to pin down the whole time & by the 3/4 mark i realized just how much i was swept up in it. top 10 for me!
TOP 10 BEST NON-HORROR MOVIES OF 2024: 1. Dune: Part 2 2. Deadpool & Wolverine 3. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story 4. The Wild Robot 5. Inside Out 2 6. Hit Man 7. Anora 8. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 9. Society Of The Snow 10. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes
Loved this list and thank you for stopping yourself short of apologizing for the list. There's no reason to apologize for liking something. Guilty pleasures don't exist. Life is too short to feel the need to apologize for everything.
Such a great list! Funnily enough I don’t think I even watched 10 Horror Movies this year, not for a lack of desire but just didn’t end up happening (maybe I did I’ll go count then before I watch your Horror Top 10). But I watched such an odd mixture of movie this year my non-horror Top 10 is all over the place too! 10. Twisters (I loved that I didn’t hate it and it was good!) 9. Saturday Night (I couldn’t stop thinking about it after Iw watched it, it was so good!) 8. IF (I saw this on my birthday and I was a puddle of tears) 7. September 5 (such a great drama) 6. The Wild Robot (the animation was amazing and it made me bawl) 5. Boy Kills World (I LOVE movie like this and this one was even a unique take from the normal over the top action/comedy) 4. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (so sweet, so funny) 3. We Live in Time (just delivered so well in my opinion!) 2. Dune Part 2 (better then the first even and I loved that one) 1. My Old Ass (this is also a movie that I just tell everyone they should watch it cause it’s just so good!)
Great pick for #1!!! I was thinking to myself as you were about to reveal it "I wonder if it's the one I think it is...surely it can't be because it didn't get much hype" But yes it's AMAZING! Very good and agreeable list
I watched #9 thanks to your video it was in, and I thought it was amazing. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days and I rewatched it 5 more times to catch everything I missed.
Horror is so hard to define, i think the first halo video game becomes a horror game when the flood come out and turn people to basically zombies. Anyway, happy new year
From your list I haven't yet seen Didi, A Different Man, Red Room and Problemista but these were all on my radar. Thoroughly enjoyed all the other ones you selected 😊 my personal favourites also include It's What's Inside, His Three Daughters, Das Lehrerzimmer, Hundreds of Beavers, A Real Pain and Anatomie d'une Chute.
Hi Emma! Here is my top (I will put this 👀, if I urge to watch it) 10. Miséricorde (Dir. Alain Guiraudie) 👀 9. The Hypnosis (Dir. Ernst De Geer) 👀 8. The Apprentice 7. Dune Part Two 6. A Real Pain 5. Anora 4. The Beast (Dir. Bertrand Bonello) 👀 3. A Different Man 2. The Brutalist 1. Challengers Have a nice year 🎉
I remember Anora from the New York Film Festival. We were on the edge of our seats wondering how the hell was this tight mess of a movie which has shades of Uncut Gems going to end. It did not disappoint. That final sequence is everything -- funny but ultimately, tragic. We cried, we cheered, we gave it such a standing ovation.
The way the movie goes from being one thing to ending in a completely different movie was incredible. The protagonist did such an amazing job I ended up feeling so attached to her
@@andresf1876 Yes! OMG -- for two hours I went through a laundry-list of emotions, from not sure what she was about, to suddenly feeling for her and wanting her to get the heck out of this mess the guy she married created for her. Incredible perf.
How interesting, one of your top 10 is actually the only movie I rated half a star last year. Always interesting to see how different opinions on movies can be.
I wanted to see A Different Man and Thelma, but for whatever reason, they passed me by. I will see them eventually, and am encouraged by your thoughts. My own list for your reading pleasure: 1. Dune: Part Two 2. Deadpool & Wolverine 3. Memoir of a Snail 4. My Old Ass 5. Furiosa 6. The Zone of Interest 7. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story 8. Civil War 9. The Great Escaper 10. Anora Honorable mentions: Kinds of Kindness, Wicked Little Letters
All Of Us Strangers is in my top 3 movies of all time! It messed me up for days!!! Woah! Happy to see it on your list! It was bought by Netflix here in the US so I could not buy it on Blu-ray so I had to get a friend of mine living in the UK to buy me a copy and send it to me. Then as fate would have it, Criterion bought the rights to it and put out a Criterion edition of the movie, so now I have both. The latter of course has more bells and whistles (special features)
I just got out of the new 3 hour Count of Monte Cristo and it was fabulous. I would also add two animated films to your top 10: Flow and The Wild Robot. I think Flow is my fave of 2024.
I’m so happy you ranked All of Us Strangers so high, it’s so incredible and I’m surprised it didn’t get more love/attention. It’s very much the Decision to Leave of 2024 for me
Thanks for sharing your non-horror top ten list with us, Emma. Here are my top three non-horror film for 2024 in descending order: 3. RED ONE (2024) - I will probably get into trouble for this, but I loved this film. It was funny, scary, and involved older mythology related to Christmas. 2. THE BEEKEEPER (2024) - A wild action film with Jason Statham playing the hero we love to see him as. 1. GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (2024) - No surprise here as you know how much I love Godzilla and other giant monsters.
I haven't seen Civil War, Didi, Monster, Problemista, or Thelma yet, but I'm so keen to see them! You've definitely sold Thelma to me in particular, I wasn't sure if I was interested initially but I definitely am now 😊 We share a few favourites but here is my non horror list: 1. Poor Things (UK release was 2024!) 2. Dune: Part Two 3. All of Us Strangers 4. Challengers 5. Perfect Days 6. Red Rooms 7. His Three Daughters 8. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (lol) 9. The Zone of Interest 10. Conclave Shout outs though go to Love Lies Bleeding, Nightbitch, My Old Ass, Priscilla, and a doc called Witches which is higher up in my overall list but I feel like docs have to be seperate haha 😅
You're totally right, I did not predict your #1. When you said nobody would guess your #1, my guess was Twisters :P Hmm, "honey movie" haven't heard that term before but I'm intrigued :P
I really liked Problemista while watching it but I forgot all about it until you mentioned it! I have a similar list, but also loved La Chimera and Challengers.
Your non-horror top 10 is always one of my fave videos of yours! Lots to add to my watchlist! Would love to see a future video on ranking top shows you love. Though you need to watch Better Things beforehand 😂
When I watched Didi I totally thought of you and “honey” films so I’m glad to see it make the list! my favorite of the year was The Substance by a mile but taking out horror I gotta go with Challengers or Furiosa. Love the video! (omg also had to add that I LOVE that you loved Thelma, June Squibb is great)
Thanks for Thelma, first time hearing about it here. Yes, a slow film, but one that feels like a real slice of life spending a day with believable elderly folks not seen too much in films. As a side note, I will be misdirecting my friends about it as a Crime Thriller featuring... Richard 'Shaft' Roundtree and Malcolm 'Clockwork Orange' McDowell!
IMO, we are in a golden age of Asian immigrant story films/media. With Minari, Riceboy Sleeps, Pachinko, of which I have read the book because I'm saving the series for a special occasion because I loved the book so much, and now Didi, which I wasn't aware of but will be now seeking out as soon as possible.
oh yes Problemista was such a delight! I need to was it again!! I haven't had the chance to see A Different Man, Red Rooms and Anora yet (and Nosferatu!!), I really liked Civil War and All of us Strangers was so beautiful....
I was not expecting to see Problemista on here! I liked it but thought his TV show Fantasmas that came out later this year was the same concept but executed MUCH better. You should definitely check that out if you haven't.
Huh. I haven't seen any of these. (Not surprising, I only saw one movie in theaters this year and it was The Apprentice. It was my wife's birthday and that's what she wanted to do. Not that it was bad, just...as an American, it's not a particularly pleasant watch. I can't imagine it is for anyone, really.) Once again, I need to go get a pen. Always love your year in review videos - there's always something I've never even heard of.
I really loved Didi and Anora. Didi reminded me of my childhood in the 80s and early 90s as an immigrant to Canada. Anora, also had that dual nationality but being more in touch with the US culture because that's where she grew up (i.e. she understood and spoke some Russian but you could tell she was more America than her roots). I guess these movies are a reflection of me in some ways. What are your recommendations for Sean Baker movies, Emma? P.S. I have the same movies for the best non-horror movies of 2024 on my own list (in no particular order) except I didn't see Red Room and Problemista.
The Dead Don't Hurt, Four Daughters (doc), Mars Express, The Creator, The Promised Land, Civil War, Drive-Away Dolls, COPA'71(doc), Last Stop in Yuma County, Slingshot
Same thing happened to me with All of Us Strangers, it didn't hit me all the way at first, but then I couldn't stop thinking about it. It's very haunting.
Question for either Emma, or anyone who's seen Civil War: in my opinion, Alex Garland's movies/shows never nail the ending. I always feel unsatisfied by the way he ends his stuff. Without spoiling anything, would you say Civil War falls into that category also? Or was the ending satisfying in your opinion?
I would not have Problemista as my number one, but I agree that the movie was very, very good. Interesting that some of this years excellent animated films didn't make your list. Very eclectic and worthy list.
Im 53 and my teenage years occurred in the 80s but Didi had an incredible impact on me. It felt so real and brought back memories of some painful years even from a different generation.

Thank you so much for this list. There were a few ones I dind't know about 😍
Spooky is an angel. This world is hardly good enough for her. Thanks for all you do and all your great work, sister.
I just got Max and Problemista is on there, gonna definitely watch this weekend! :)
I wanted to see A Different Man and Thelma, but for whatever reason, they passed me by. I will see them eventually, and am encouraged by your thoughts.
My own list for your reading pleasure:
1. Dune: Part Two
2. Deadpool & Wolverine
3. Memoir of a Snail
4. My Old Ass
5. Furiosa
6. The Zone of Interest
7. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
8. Civil War
9. The Great Escaper
10. Anora
Honorable mentions: Kinds of Kindness, Wicked Little Letters
All Of Us Strangers is in my top 3 movies of all time! It messed me up for days!!! Woah! Happy to see it on your list! It was bought by Netflix here in the US so I could not buy it on Blu-ray so I had to get a friend of mine living in the UK to buy me a copy and send it to me. Then as fate would have it, Criterion bought the rights to it and put out a Criterion edition of the movie, so now I have both. The latter of course has more bells and whistles (special features)
No Conclave?
Ralph Fiennes was incredible!
Conclave is released in Australia January 9th so...
I just got out of the new 3 hour Count of Monte Cristo and it was fabulous. I would also add two animated films to your top 10: Flow and The Wild Robot. I think Flow is my fave of 2024.
Didi is truly heartwarming! I'm glad it made it into your list def for me is at least top three of 2024
I’m so happy you ranked All of Us Strangers so high, it’s so incredible and I’m surprised it didn’t get more love/attention. It’s very much the Decision to Leave of 2024 for me
Thanks for sharing your non-horror top ten list with us, Emma. Here are my top three non-horror film for 2024 in descending order:
A Different Man, Love Lies Bleeding and Didi are in my top 10 as well. Such a underrated gems
@5:35 wow that was rly profound i love that sentiment
My favourite of the year was All of Us Strangers! Beautiful film!
Problemista is one of those movies that remind me why movies exist in the first place. Magic.
I haven't seen Civil War, Didi, Monster, Problemista, or Thelma yet, but I'm so keen to see them! You've definitely sold Thelma to me in particular, I wasn't sure if I was interested initially but I definitely am now 😊
We share a few favourites but here is my non horror list:
1. Poor Things (UK release was 2024!)
2. Dune: Part Two
3. All of Us Strangers
4. Challengers
5. Perfect Days
6. Red Rooms
7. His Three Daughters
8. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (lol)
9. The Zone of Interest
10. Conclave
Shout outs though go to Love Lies Bleeding, Nightbitch, My Old Ass, Priscilla, and a doc called Witches which is higher up in my overall list but I feel like docs have to be seperate haha 😅
You’ll love Thelma! Thanks for sharing your list!
Excellent review emma 😊
You're totally right, I did not predict your #1. When you said nobody would guess your #1, my guess was Twisters :P Hmm, "honey movie" haven't heard that term before but I'm intrigued :P
Looking forward to it ,ur good as always
my favorite non horrors of the year: we live in time, the wild robot, challengers, kinds of kindness, and small things like these
Problemista is amazing! Also on my Top 5 of 2024. I love everything Julio Torres does.
I absolutely adore Julio Torres. Problemista is an absolute standout.
I don't really have a list, but my #1 for 2024 was Poor Things. I can't remember the last time I didn't think about that film!
Tilda Swinton is a gift. Didn’t know about Problemista, but I’m gonna find it.
I will watch Red Rooms tonight. thanks for sharing.
(omg also had to add that I LOVE that you loved Thelma, June Squibb is great)
Today is my birthday I'm 55!😁
Happy birthday! I’m 55 too 😁
@adamp2029 oh wow welcome to the club!👍
Happy birthday!!!
Thanks for Thelma, first time hearing about it here. Yes, a slow film, but one that feels like a real slice of life spending a day with believable elderly folks not seen too much in films.
As a side note, I will be misdirecting my friends about it as a Crime Thriller featuring...
Richard 'Shaft' Roundtree and Malcolm 'Clockwork Orange' McDowell!
yesss problemista!!! as a salvadorean I am proud to see such a good film from one of us!!
Such a great list 🤩 I just have to have Challengers on my list!
Love Lies Bleeding , Blink Twice and Dune part 2
Thank you!!!
Hey! Emma!! ❤❤
oh yes Problemista was such a delight!
Not on topic, but your hair looks amazing 🤩
Favourite scene of the year - from Red Rooms.
Never even heard of Thelma until now, but going to track it down. That looks great.
Hey 👋 Emma💖
Red rooms was incredible. I think it was so good it deserves to sit up with films like Hereditary and Blair Witch Project.
I loved Problemista too but unfortunately it didn’t make my top 10 of 2024. My favourite movie of 2024 was definitely Dune: Part Two
Civil War is great indeed. Nice list. You'll be surprised but Gladiator 2 is my favorite non-horror movie of 2024
NUMBER ONE IS NUMBER ONE
I really enjoyed Civil War once I knew it was just about the journalists and knew what I was in for. I appreciated how apolitical it actually was
Question for either Emma, or anyone who's seen Civil War: in my opinion, Alex Garland's movies/shows never nail the ending. I always feel unsatisfied by the way he ends his stuff. Without spoiling anything, would you say Civil War falls into that category also? Or was the ending satisfying in your opinion?
I loved the ending that was the most intense part for me.
Civil War was my number one on non-horror list!
Thelma was great. Funny and heartwarming!
Furiosa for the win 🏆
I would not have Problemista as my number one, but I agree that the movie was very, very good. Interesting that some of this years excellent animated films didn't make your list. Very eclectic and worthy list.
Hi Emma ! Love Lies Bleeding was the most memorable film experience for me this year. Glad it was in your Top 10 ! ✅️
But did you like 'Problemista' more than 'The Substance'?
Such different films why compare? Both great in different ways
@@spookyastronautsagreed 😊
