My understanding is that it was created by them and sent back to a time before the 2 realities split.
The fact that they appear in the "prophecies" and writings of the First Ones is because they are the First Ones.
Also Bell was behind all the opposing groups for an end game that the majority was unaware of.
Fringe Divison exists due to a secret committee started by him through his agents in response to "The Pattern" which he is also behind.
The pattern allowed Bell to release tech into the wild where others would work on it to achieve their own goals only to then be caught and the tech retrieved by Fringe secretly under the direction of the committee.
On the primary earth Jones was dismissed by Bell and black listed after which he became a high placed contactor to both ZFT and "the Pattern" while not knowing he was working for Bell while on earth 2 he pulled that Jones into his inner circle and instilled a nihilism into him that manifested later.
ZFT thinks unrestrained tech will bring the end to the world so want to horrify people with science to achieve their goals, this means they can be used to supply and monitor pattern incidents while not realizing there is a "pattern".
On the other side Bell supplies the Department of Defense with the tech they use against the primary world directly or through his inner circle like Jones as well as secretly supporting more radical elements within the system.
His cult like inner circle are also peppered through all factions on that side.
Primary Jones also serves Bell by trying to kill Bell in that Jones was motivated to make ZFT and the like trust and rely on him so he could use them to his own ends therefore he did alot of work for Bell while trying to get to him.
The one thing Bell couldn't do was safely send people between the worlds which Jones solved in order to reach Bell and kill him.
There wasn't a single person not being manipulated in the whole show by Bell just so he could remake reality and humanity.
The Pattern to ZFT to the other side etc are not being switched out they are being zoomed out to encompass the larger picture and all are parts of a larger machine.
Many slaves didn't go anywhere, but just began getting paid, and might have wound up worse off in that respect, given that their employers weren't under any obligation to give them room and board, etc. while also paying them. My essentially White great grandfather worked on a plantation with many of them.

I really don't understand you people, cute pets and animals rescues videos all over Internet. Talking sh*t about people who even hurt them even a little, going ga-ga saying it outrageous. You don't even put a finger on a chick when on video. But like hundred of thousands of bovine animals are killed on daily basis for DELICIOUS FOOD and so called your cute chicks (the male ones) are ground to paste even when they were alive, for animal feed in factories. Then nobody is talks about it. Cows are roaming on the streets of India because people are not butchering them, replace indians with Americans and they all will be wiped out in a day. We don't worship buffalos, goats, pig but we still don't eat them. Americans and Europeans want to be torch bearer for humanity and animal cruelty but criticise other countries on any issue. You can eat and kill what you want, nobody cares, but you hate and make fun of others just because, they don't follow your norms is hypocritical. Cow is a sacred animal in our religion, if it by its virtue can save few million animals from being butchered, and if people from other country shames, makes fun of us for this. Also, if things were opposite like, fictional scenario where if Europeans were vegetarians and Indian were butchering animals. Thousands of European organisations would have been out for blood for us and sh*tting on our head on daily basis for animal cruelties and sh*t. Like indian people are so evil killing innocent animals. Making documentries, fox, cnn, bbc, vice, insider, dw showing how animals are being kept and killed on regular basis to show every European person like show shitty indian or rest of world people are . Making memes out of it and such. But world has no problem with this because Europeans and Americans have no problem with it. Making fun of vegans(of even America) has become a norm now, memes are being made of them. I don't understand logic behind people who makes fun of vegans. As again we don't care what you eat and kill, you can eat what you want cows, goats, dogs, cats, tigers, lions, other humans whatever.
