    When I lived in Seattle around 15 years ago having chickens was a fad, and I went all out, ordering 25 day old chicks, raising them in my basement untill they were ready to go out, and building a rather grand and fancy house and run for them in my back yard. I overdid everything, but the chickens actually were worth it, to me. They make great pets, especially if they bond to you when very young. One hen lived more than 10 years!

    Such cute birds. They need some dirt now. How long before they can join the others in the yard?

    • @BackyardBirdsofAustralia
      @BackyardBirdsofAustralia  10 месяцев назад +5

      Yeah I ended up getting them a big bowl of dirt for dust baths. They've grown up a lot since I filmed this so they're sleeping and hanging out with the big chooks now but it certainly took a lot of growing up and adjusting!

    my chicken likes to use sand instead of her dirt to dust bathe 🥲

    • @fexonix1097
      @fexonix1097 Месяц назад

      That's what most birds use. It is called dust bathing and they do it because they don't like getting wet(most birds excluding water fowl and such) and I just found it cool that they use sand/dust to bathe themselves instead of water.

    Dust bath is so important to some birds such as chickens and house sparrows. They absolutely have to have dust baths, if not probably stresses them a little I think.

    • @BackyardBirdsofAustralia
      @BackyardBirdsofAustralia  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I ended uo getting them a big bowl of dirt/dust to have a dust bath in and they'd usually have some good spots outside as well.
