He got a bit nerfed a bit like 3 or 4 patches ago, but not since. It’s not that he got nerfed, he’s actually been buffed. But only barely while tons of other characters have gotten huge buffs. He’s not picked as much because his damage isn’t spectacular, and compared to a lot of the characters played here, his moves are a bit slow or lacking in range, and relatively high in whiff recovery. He’s still excellent at what he was before: being a defensive character. But this meta prefers defensive assists while point characters are almost all offense.

Last season, you could just 5M spam with Vegito and got away with it as the recovery was too fast. Now it is much less spamable.

GO1 didn't qualify to the World Finals. He lost 0-3 against Hirohiro and 0-3 against Fenritti during the Japanese regional Finals. He said that the game has changed a lot, it's way more agressive than before and it's harder for him now, since he was really good because of his defense. He also focused on other games like Street Fighter V and Melty Blood.
It has some funny moments, but I see what you mean. People like Damascus and Tyrant are too nice to do it back. Plus, I think everybody knew the French players had an edge to win the whole thing, so that might have played a role in how they commentated - the Americans with a bit more desperation, and the French with a quieter confident grace.
