It's also interesting that the game that turned Clemson around in Brent Venables' first year was LSU. That wasn't Venables' first game, but it was his first year. And it's Tom Allen's first game in his first year is LSU. Maybe history repeats itself, just hopefully a little faster.
Great commentary ! Military comparison on point. Couldn’t wait to hear what you two had to say….I knew it would be more informative ! Mama Pickett says “Get well soon.”
Reasons for the move: 1. He will not be on the road recruiting. 2. His daughter lives in Greenville 3. His son will also be on staff 4. Keowee Lake House 5. Shares values Dabo on developing young men and spiritual beliefs.
Keep hearing people say that this is a lateral move by Allen or even a downgrade. I couldn’t disagree more. When is the last time Penn St won everything of significance. It took the playoff expanding to 12 for them to even stiff the playoff. Clemson has the second most playoff appearances & 2 national championships this decade. I guarantee you that in the last decade Clemson has had more defensive players drafted than Penn St & I know they have more first round picks. When Venables left Clemson he was making over 2 million a year so Clemson can pay as much or more as Penn St. Clemson has an easier path to conference championships than Penn St. & tell me who would you rather work for Dabo or James Franklin. Also much better weather in Clemson & easier access to high school talent in the Southeast. And if all this isn’t enough the icing on the cake would you rather being living in Clemson on Lake Hartwell or in Happy Valley. I know where I rather be. So don’t tell me this is a lateral move because I am not buying it.
Was Wes forced to coach from the sidelines and not allowed to sit in the box? I've never heard that was so. If he felt more comfortable there, he should've sat in the box. Especially if it suited him better and kept him from "failing". And once so many more staff were allowed, there were any number of people who could signal the calls/send them into Barrett's helmet, etc.
Wes failed himself. He knew he wasn't ready, but he played the system and got a huge payday. That's all he was after. I'm glad he's gone. Such a mistake.
As a Penn State fan, I wish Tom Allen the best at Clemson, but to be honest, I am relieved he is no longer the D coordinator in Happy Valley. First, although Allen inherited a Top 5 defense, he didn’t really develop any players over 12 months in Happy Valley. In fact, their defensive ranking dropped 5 spots in 2024 from the previous year. Lastly, he can’t really take credit for the development and progress of stars like Dani-Sutton, Carter or their D line. Their success is a result of the defensive line coach, Deon Barnes. Again, I wish him the best, but you guys are giving him too much credit for Penn State’s defensive success. All of these stars are holdovers from Manny Diaz’s time in State College and some great position coaches who have been in Happy Valley for a few years.
As I Tiger fan I agree with you. High side for us is his experience and creativeness. He’s not afraid to bring the pressure where we were becoming content with being a true man to man defense. But to your point he was a plug n play with dogs in the backfield at Penn so I’m curious.
@ I will say this: one thing about Allen was - at least during his years at Indiana - his players really played for him. Often times, out punching their weight. Unfortunately, his sample size at Penn State was so small and his time there so brief, it’s hard to really know what kind of DC he would have been over time. He really inherited Diaz’s defense and was tasked with not screwing it up, and to his credit, he didn’t, although the second half against ND was not good, and neither was the Oregon game. There was a series of communication issues that are well documented but you can read about those.
@ By the way, I am not sure if Clemson would ever want this, but as Penn State fan, I would love it if Clemson and Miami joined the Big 10. That would be awesome getting to play you guys.
The whole point was to improve Clemson’s defense. It’s a step up for us. It’s not like he tanked the PSU defense. They dropped a few spots in rankings defensively..Still top 10
WOW, way to go, Dabo. Can't wait to see The TIGERS going at it in '25.

Could be David Hood’s best video work yet. I like the door in the background
I don't know, I kinda thought the curtain in the dark was peak Hood 😆
Man… tough crowd in here. 😂

Hopefully Allen will bring authority to the defense. David I hope you are better soon.

Totally agree!
Agreed! Clemson is a step above Penn State in this era.
CADE KLUBNIK IS HIM!💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥
Can someone upgrade Hood's internet connectin? Goodness gracious.
David, is that a Milwaukee Braves cap? Going back a while for that cap
Hindsight 20/20 moment... "Tom Allen will go get Jimmy's & Joes" but now we're told he will not be recruiting...

It probably didn’t help he went into games with these plays he’d bring part of the game plan and he’d never use them.
They said Godwin might stay on as an analysis
We need to evaluate the corner position. I saw a lack of effort on some run plays. "Terrell" and "Lucas". Almost seemed scared. Tape doesn't lie
Is Goodwin gonna sell his house to Allen like Venables did?
