- Aspect ratios, pans, tilts, apertures, rack focus: when it comes to filmmaking and camera operations, there seems to be no end to the technical jargon. But one thing everyone seems to recognize and identify is the humble, common zoom. Everyone knows what a zoom is, right? Well…not really.
While the zoom may be a very popular cinematic term, it is also wildly misused. The biggest source of confusion comes from people mistaking a zoom for a dolly shot. What's the difference? To put it simply, a dolly shot is created by pushing the camera closer to or further from the subject, usually with a platform and set of tracks. A zoom is more or less a simple magnification created by adjusting the focal length of the camera's lens. Still a little confused? Well, you're in luck. This video breaks down the major technical and theoretical differences between the zoom and the dolly. Have a watch, and be sure to stay tuned until the end to test your zoom vs. dolly knowledge! It's awesome that Clockwork Orange's opening scene went from a zoom to a dolly and you could hardly see the transition. Great video!
I honestly still don't understand how Kubrick did this so flawlessly.
As dated as they are I love zooms and love to use them when making films, two of my favourite uses of zooms are the 1967 series the prisoner and tarkovsky’s Solaris
Im 16 seconds in and I am SO happy you have finally clearned this up for those not in the know! Almost got worried when showing the fist clips... Nice job
10/10 on the quiz. I was little unsure with 8 one from CONJURING only because of very tight framing and pretty fast zooming and knowing that this movie in modern. But I also realized that space beetwen object do not changes in time so it fits to zoom. Great vid!
I'm so confused to know what it is, even when I know the definition of them and can you pls post the answer, the link broken
i have never ever ever heard of a zolly. in my experience it's either a dolly zoom or a vertigo shot
The zoom shots in Todd Haynes’ Safe were fantastic
One of the best videos from this channel yet.
Yo i love your vids! You guys have so many, and it’s kind of hard to pick a specific topic to watch. Would be so nice if you could update your playlists so its easier to find videos about directors/ actors, etc. Thanks!!
3,5,6,7,8,10 were zooms and others were dolly.
can you name the movies?
@@2109MI you can look at the top-left
@@berkany.476 hahaha, thanks man, I've missed that
A successful training indeed - got every quiz question right, but probably would have gotten less than 50% before watching
I also find Steven Soderberg's' work for the Ocean's Trilogy to be a great modern use of zooms to establish the location and movement of many different people in a scene
the quiz answers
1. Dolly
2. Dolly
3. Zoom
4. Dolly
5. Zoom

Nice work. Could’ve used some Robert Altman shots. He was the master using zoom to reveal place, character, and sometimes plot.
thanks for the upload!

Crash Zooms look awesome.
Wb the extreme zoom in Grand Budapest Hotel ? How did they pull it off ?
OMG such a great video! thanks
So Zolly is what Edmund used in the Scream painting?
Great Channel. Cheers!
tq infomation..
Two of the 3 videos at the start (Both 'Drive' and 'Magnolia') that you claim not to be zooms, actually are a combination of a dolly, and a zoom. Just something I noticed.
Is number 9, Casino (4:29) purely a dolly? Obviously it's mostly dolly but it feels like a little zoom is thrown in too to me. Can you combine a dolly in with a zoom in?
Sure, a zoom zoom. It's probably up to personal preference in terms of whether it actually has any positive effect on the overall zoom.
Thank you
why is it titled with SFX Secrets? nothing to do with SFX
Well, it's also the abbreviation for "Special Effects", it's a lil more reffered to as "Sound FX" for clarity of circumstances......
@@finalrenderanimationstudio Even then, the zoom isn't a special effect.
Wish I had found this channel neck when I was studying camera movements and stuff
I have literally never heard anyone call a Vertigo "Zolly". Is that even a thing?
NEVER KNEW THIS.
Linus Sandgren went all in on Zooms in First Man
I don't think people call it a 'zolly'
10/10

youre good!
my friend wanted to do directing of one of my scripts... And so I took time to explain him a little bit about a camera. Trying to understand if he knows anything really.
I started about the difference of Zoom / Dolly and he gave up directing LOL
Can anyone tell me what film that is at 0:00 - 0:03?
drive, it is mentioned in top left corner
It's actually called a zolly? I've always heard it called the Hitchcock zoom. But I guess zolly is fine - I can't hate on a portmanteau.
Good video, but don‘t call a vertigo a „zolly“😅

So there is Zootilpani
?
123 dolly ,45678910 zoom
Almost! 1, 2, 4, and 9 were dolly. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 were zoom.
@@jacobvarney23 Number 6 is Dollly: note that objects appear behind the pillar (column) as you approach the actor. Also the girl's head moves away from the pillar (column). Only a change of angle, with spatial movement could do that.
70% not bad

I feel like 8th is dolly
It isn't.
Allot of these are Dolly Shots. Get it together Fandor.
People just don't give a *
My take on this... WARNING, long post.
OPINION? Dolly = Zoom, or Dolly vs. Zoom
There are two schools of thought regarding Dolly shots vs. Zoom shots...
------
1.) Perhaps the more popular opinion is that they are two different things. These folks insist that a zoom is accomplished with a special lens that can adjust focal length either manually or with motorized controls. The dolly shot on the other hand is accomplished by physically moving the camera closer to, or farther from the subject, using a dolly. It's pretty much the same idea as a furniture dolly, only a LOT more expensive. 😆
2.) I was taught what may be a much less popular viewpoint. A dolly is not different from a zoom, instead, it is merely one way among many, to achieve the zoom effect.
------
There are lots of good reasons for #2 being more correct, despite its probable lack of popularity.
First, there is no doubt that there are different types of zooms and the effect can be created a number of ways.
There are actual mechanical lenses which physically alter the focal length. There are cameras, and camcorders that can digitally create the effect. There are even cameras that combine both digital and optical methods for an "extended zoom." There are editing programs that enable you to create the zoom effect in post-production. There are even many other uses of the term "zoom" that suggest a bunch more... if you are on a desktop computer as you read this, you might be able to "zoom" in or out of your browser view to increase or decrease the size of the text and images. You can zoom in and out using the pinch motion on your touchscreen, and you can even use it figuratively, like when you're trying to zoom in on the cause of a problem.
A dolly move on the other hand, is completely specific to one thing only - a particular combination of equipment and the movement of a camera. It's yet another method of achieving the zoom effect.
Second, there is often no easy way to tell the difference between a dolly move and an optical zoom. Yes the actual physical movement of the camera does change the perspective of the scene, but it's often imperceptible. Even this video which claims "A Zoom is not the same thing as a Dolly" ironically starts by fooling the viewer with dolly shots while making us think they are zooms! Are you just messin' with me Fandor? 🤔
Look at Jack, now look at William H., now back at Jack... dolly? zoom? dolly... zoom? They both get larger in the frame = zoom.
You all know what I think the correct answer is... They are ALL zooms, but some of the zooms were accomplished with a dolly move. HA!
Many dictionaries also support the idea that there are multiple ways to achieve the zoom effect, with general definitions such as:
• [noun] - a means of producing an enlarged image (as in a camera).
• [noun] - a camera shot that changes smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa.
• [verb] - (of a camera) change smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa.
These even hint at a dolly move!
• [intransitive/transitive] - if something such as a camera zooms somewhere, or if you zoom it somewhere, it moves so that it makes something seem much closer or farther away.
• [phrasal verb] - to adjust a camera to make a person or thing being photographed appear larger or closer.
So, what's your opinion? Dolly = Zoom, or Dolly vs. Zoom?
movie at 2:30 ?
Event Horizon. The movie title is in the top left corner.
