As the Philippines pushes for change, the fate of Jeepneys hangs in the balance, sparking a spirited dialogue on modernization, heritage, and the evolving urban landscape.
It was interesting hearing yours and the locals' thoughts on the jeepneys, and I agree, they are a symbol of the Philippines, but I laughed when you sat down in the air-conditioned one and you loving it. Air-Con will always win out in the end in a tropical country.
@@marcoroams agree that they must retain a limited no. because they are iconic to the country. but also they need to have their engines replace to meet environmental standards.
the notion that actual leftover jeeps from the 'W' became a staple are over exaggerated to say the least. it's the idea of it that caught on. they were replaced with different iterations quite sooner than most thought. anyway...they can enclose the old jeepneys, ad AC, then replace the engines with ones that are more eco-friendly (this was THE biggest reason behind the decision to replace them). the new ones just don't look good, and cost almost twice as much (accdg. to jeepney manufacturers) compared to had they been assembled from scratch. the new ones are only comfortable because of AC but have you seen them during rush hour? ugh...maximum standing mode. the passengers are way more cramped in the new ones and since they're enclosed, i can only imagine the different odors that are in there. at night, it's preferable to have a seat than have AC. i've seen a different one though than these 'modern jeepneys'. it has a lower clearance which means none if this standing room nonsense. i still wish they'd just maintain the old look and just upgrade them with ac and other bells and whistles especially the ones in iloilo and the panay region. they're just so unique.
Haha that Cobra ad is perfection!! Love the videos brother!! I'm off to Philippines for a missions trip again in 2 weeks and have my own vlogs I made years ago which I've been watching to pump me up again which led to me finding your videos. Keep up the good work mate!! Great stuff
Hey Marco!!! Keep up the good work brother!!! Keep creating content like you have and you’ll definitely become a RUclips star. I’d love to learn about your life before RUclips? What else have you done for a living?
Sometimes we need to embrace changes for improvement. Though traditional Jeepney became an iconic symbol of the Philippines when it comes public transportation, well sad to say that alot of old Jeepney contributes air pollution in the country thats why its really needs to replace with a new one. But on the contrary old Jeepney is more durable than the new one.
@@marcoroams the old ones should be phased out to help the air quality a bit good. But the not so old Jeepney should still work as public utility vehicle coz not everyone can afford to have a bank loan to get a new one or better yet they must maintained their Jeepney in good running condition that passes the land transportion test for smoke belching test so they can still have their franchise
Actually some cities had full electrical versions on government grants 4 years ago then somehow two years later they became private owned and replaced by gas vehicles owned by Chinese investors as shown in the video. There is a whole story here waiting to be exposed
The “symbolic” models are those which you refer to as the “original” ones (not from WW2, as those were manufactured here in the 60s and 70s (check out Sarao and Francisco Motors). The new jeepneys can certainly be redesigned for cultural value but imo the whole system (stop anywhere, no clear measure of distance travelled/fare) should be fixed. Take note, studies show that the country loses billions of pesos daily due to our traffic and inefficient transportation systems.
Unlike minibuses, jeepneys are multipurpose. They are more than just a bus that carry passengers to designated routes, they are also... - Daily vehicles (can be owned for personal use) - SUVs (can drive offroad) - Trucks (can carry heavy cargo) - Station wagons (perfect for vacations and road trips) - Boats (can cross wild rivers and floods) - Sports cars (can participate in car shows) And can to be modified in a way to avoid phase-out. Like turning them into RVs and food trucks, adding turbos or other sports car/ modifications to their engine. This is why restomodding is important. PS: There's a Filipino vlogger who makes jeepney content on his YT channel showing jeepneys that have cool modifications.
Change is always extremely difficult. People are just used to their lifestyle and the government trying to take their jeepenys does scare those folks. I feel bad for the drivers

old jeepneys should be taken out of the road and replaced it with the much better mini bus you just rode. you tried both vehicles and you know the differences.
husband speaking age 80 - the new Jeepney's are probably less polluting, but the family's who run the old ones are not getting the new ones. ( don't know that for sure ) I am sure the old owners could not afford the new bus so some one is making money on this for sure.
My thoughts about jeepney's as a student and i commute every single day when i have a class i do loved the old jeepney's than the new ones because the old ones is already part of culture of filipinos unlike the new ones
I think some countries and their iconic traditions and old ways need to stay and not change 🤷 lets face it, most of these places in countries that have kept their old styles and traditions are what keep tourists coming back, and its nice to see and learn these old traditions and cultures. The jeepneys look very tropical and changing them to those bus type vehicles will make the place look ugly
Honest question to my fellow filipinos, why can't you just replace the engine instead to make it more eco friendly if it causes to much pollution? instead of change the whole look of the traditional jeepney?
