For the wire toy you need to put a resistor on the LED like a 1kΩ or anything that will make it bright enough to see. The resistor acts as a diode. But it doesn't provide protection against reverse voltage. It keeps the LED from breaking.

There use to joke shop in my city in Canada that sold prank staplers that shouldn't be sold to anyone. The shock that they gave you didn't seem safe at all it was brutal. I've been looking for those exact staplers forever but I can't find them even online. This was in the late 90's so the company is either gone or can't sell them anymore. It was red and you could hear the electricity when you pressed down and it was hard to let go of it if you pressed all the way down and didn't quickly jolt it out of your hand. This was sold to children and that same company had joke gum also that would shock you pretty bad but the stapler was way worse.
A good idea for the jack in the box is that there are two metal contacts, so one on the jacks hand and one piece on the box above it so when the jack jumps up the contacts close a circuit which will shock you
