  • Meacham’s sure grasp of history and the leaders who have contributed to it earned him a Pulitzer for American Lion, his life of Andrew Jackson; he has also written American Gospel, a portrait of the Founders, and has told the story of one of the last century’s decisive relationships in Franklin and Winston. Now Meacham chronicles the career of George H.W. Bush, drawing on official archives and on the former president’s personal diaries to follow him from his Connecticut upbringing and service in World War II to his successful Texas oil enterprises, and through his long and diverse public career as a congressman, U.S. ambassador, CIA director, and chief executive.

Jon is a great historian and I believe he really tries to present history in a way that makes one want to read and learn more about the people and events he writes about. I love these lectures and interviews as they are very insightful for me as an Australian fascinated with US history. Thank you .

You should also mention that it was Lyndon Johnson who pushed and drove the Civil Rights Act and Medicare and the like. He also predicted that it would mean that the South would be lost because of desegration.

I'd like to hear Meacham's reaction to the revelation of how GHW Bush tried to obstruct justice in the Agnew case.

Why did GHWB launch the Persian Gulf War? To prove he was "tough," or to be a war President like many, or most, other American presidents? Or do you think there were some geopolitical reasons?
