Pledge of Allegiance: Why do we say it, what does it mean?

Every morning, children and teachers across the nation start their day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. But do we really THINK about what we're saying and WHY we're saying it? What does it mean to "pledge allegiance", and to what/whom are we making that pledge?
