Why can't she just respond honestly about the limited government question? Namely, that while conservatives are for a limited government as a general rule, they don't mind government intervening to protect/enforce their conservative social policies. That's the difference between them and the libertarians who want the government to stay out of both conservative and liberal issues.
It's a very fine line.... government should not control what a person should do, but should control what affects a group or the society... and that is a very fine line...
Steve Schmidt is a brave man who is willing to stick to his guns and comes across as someone who could actually have a true debate. I don't agree with many of his ideas but he's not willing to pander, which is something you have to respect
Seeing Christine O'Donnell on this episode reminded me of the episode of Family Guy when Brian went on Real Time plugging his book "Wish It, Want It, Do It", and got intellectually served.
Everyone stop fighting, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and calling the opinions you think are wrong and insulting them will not make them change their opinions. Come at me.
Why, because I can think outside of the box? Because I don't make decisions base on emotions but base on intelligent thought? How am I stupid? It is because I am willing to step back and look at the whole situation and how it effects our society before I make a decision?
Ugh I agree. Bill usually has conservatives on and it's a bit awful to listen to them go on and on about stuff they don't believe in, but this was bad. She was SO out of her league and they all treated her with respect, which made it weirder. She had NO idea what she was talking about, and agree or disagree but David, Katrina, Jim and Steve definitely do. This was painful.
.....Several people do where I don't base on my studies. Also, I have many friends that worked in own small businesses and I worked in one for years. As a result I know a lot about how a small business is ran. While I never studied business in school I do know a lot about it. Experience in a lot of ways is a lot more important than education. Sometimes you have to be leary of people with PhDs. All the education in the world doesn't mean anything if you can relate it to real world situations
OK, but how about aborting unwanted financial responsabilities? Let's face it, abortion is about avoiding responsabilities. It is a right of men and women. Sex is about entertainment, not about reproduction.
I agree, every single law does have all kinds of effects. That is why we can't just straight up pass a laws without looking at everything and getting input from both sides (Republicans and Democrats). When we fail to do that we get into a situation where our countries and it's systems fall apart.
First off, Fox does put people on their show that are intelligent and know their stuff. They just place a different side on the story. Also, just because somebody didn't study something for years doesn't mean they don't know anything about it. My main field is Physics. But from studying that I learned several things to relate to different ideas in life. I learned that in several situations there are several variables involved which is why I don't make any issue black and white....
Ended it via coming down on the Federal side in an issue that ultimately boiled down to states' rights. Were such an issue confronted today, they would side with states' rights faster than Bill could light up a joint.
....understand that there are many variables involved in a situation and we can't just jump to conclusions so quick. That is what I do all the time. Someone comes up to me and says gay marriage should be legal I step back and think of the pros and cons of it happening. How would it affect us as a society? Would it be huge? Would it benefit us in anyway or harm us? Just because I studied one field for almost a decade (including HS) doesn't mean I don't have knowledge of other areas.
I've watch this episode and all I was saying is, "Bill, ok you have her back and I know you want to remain on a good terms but why are you letting Christine get away with so much nonsense?!"
I thought David Simon was brilliant. And I loved the question about gay marriage. Christine was completely wrong. When you have your right infringed upon, the supreme court decides that, not the state government. That's stupid. That's why the southern states were able to hold slaves and pass laws that discriminated against minorities. And great comebacks by Steve Schmidt. Finally a reasonable Republican.
Yes, you are right. Sometimes is the responsible thing to do. But back on the theme. How about men aborting financial responsabilities of unwanted pregnancies? It sounds as a good idea to me.
The fact that those indiscretions became public later is irrelevant. The point is these men had great accomplishments and whatever they did behind closed doors is less important compared with the impact they had on this country. What Simon is saying is if we elected leaders based on character we wouldn't have had those men and if they accomplished those things despite what they did behind closed doors, then we should realize our leader's political actions matter more then their character.
I remember once on New Rules when Bill made a joke and they put up the wrong picture that corresponded with that joke. The crowd laughed at the picture even though it made no sense.
I don't understand why Bill Maher allows Christine O'Donnell to go on and on and on during the show. Why give a person like her a forum? She was so out of her league with people like David Simon, Schmidt, and Katrina. She would be out of her league with a room of kindergarteners.
Strange how marriage is state defined and defined according to RELIGIOUS lobby ... but DIVORCE is entirely a civil matter, and All Midey Gard has NOTHING to do with the dissolution of the "legal" relationship. Marriage is a CIVIL act and ongoing contract. To define it state-by-state when the actors can move to another state and ?retain ? lose that contractual status? Crazy.
What Maher said between 4:35 to 4:54 is an excellent point that clowns on comments or social media or real life even misses which is that abortion is not the same as other social issues, it is more concerning than let us say gay marriage or marijuana in which very little objection if any can be made.
I don't understand why so many conservatives have a hard time answering these questions. Firstly, small government and limited government are two different things. Secondly, no conservative, with the exception of the relatively small number of right-leaning libertarians, advocates for 'no government'. Conservatives aren't in favor of a government that is so weak that it can't pass any laws at all. Beyond that, it's a matter of democratic consensus relative to constitutional interpretation.
Overall, though, my arguement about gay marriage is that is does affect us as a society in one way shape or form. You listed a postive way that it affects us which is great. My big beef about the arguement on gay marriage is how everybody says it doesn't affect them where is does. Allowing it to happen will affect our entire society and people need to be away of the potential good and bad.
Saying that the president's character doesn't matter at all is a bit much, but I agree with the larger point Simon made. Too many people vote purely based on which candidate they like best as a person and paying little to no mind to what they actually plan to do. I remember people proudly saying that they voted for Bush purely because of his religious views. The truth is, as Simon said, get rid of the presidents who had affairs and we lose good presidents. Their political actions matter most.
I usually don't feel sorry for people when they say something extraordinarily stupid but I can't even watch the whole video without cringing. How the guy in the blue shirt didn't just reach over and backhand her out of her seat...HOLY S&%T.
What did she say that was bad? She said that the federal government can't dictate every state's action. I agree with her because it makes the people more involved with their government. This is what makes Canada and USA different. In Canada, the provinces do whatever fits them without federal intervention. Canada's federal gov't is small compared to the collective of the provincial gov'ts, which is not the case in the states. However, neither Democrats or Republicans give this option. )=
I live in a country where gay marriage is legal and I can say unequivically that my life has not changed since its legalization. There is more effect on a country when the political focus is on arguing about the matter then when it is actually legalized, that could go with drugs as well. Imagine all the progress that could be made in the American political arena if they focused on actual issues....
Christine is so dishonest. She would outlaw abortion at a federal level if she could.
I would too but that likely will never happen
Why can't she just respond honestly about the limited government question? Namely, that while conservatives are for a limited government as a general rule, they don't mind government intervening to protect/enforce their conservative social policies. That's the difference between them and the libertarians who want the government to stay out of both conservative and liberal issues.
State's rights. Gimmie a break. The only time states rights are ever discussed is when people want to have the right to discriminate against others.
David Simon should be on tv panels more often!
It's a very fine line.... government should not control what a person should do, but should control what affects a group or the society... and that is a very fine line...
There is a huge difference between the radical republicans and the conservative republicans. They are not one and the same
I am in disbelief here! She saved her best material for last: the civil rights war! Wow. I wish she was a Senator.
It's painful listening to Christine O'Donnell talk
5:12 her nervous laugh when she realizes she just got flamed lol
It is a comedy show. And Christine O'Donnell kept up her end of the bargain. That was hilarious on the infringement of rights!!!
Steve Schmidt is a brave man who is willing to stick to his guns and comes across as someone who could actually have a true debate. I don't agree with many of his ideas but he's not willing to pander, which is something you have to respect
.... Was she huffing her spray tan before she went on or something?
the ending was classic...
She is talking about ending slavery
Seeing Christine O'Donnell on this episode reminded me of the episode of Family Guy when Brian went on Real Time plugging his book "Wish It, Want It, Do It", and got intellectually served.
It was funny to look at the expressions of the other people at the table, and how flabbergasted they were by the crap coming out of her mouth.
Thanks Bill Maher i soo needed that laugh from O'Donnell :) lol
The anguished expression on David Simon's face having to listen to O'Donnell's gibberish on the "Civil Rights War" says it all really.
She's a good fit for the Tea Party.
Christine ODumbell needs to go back to highschool and take some history classes.
david simon is a goddamn genius
Everyone stop fighting, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and calling the opinions you think are wrong and insulting them will not make them change their opinions. Come at me.

I think Christine O' Donnell, is a cutie..
Well it is difficult to defend yourself when you have five people against you.
They are jsut all excited to be on the Bill Maher show, probably perfectly intelligent once they calm down at home later.
David Simon for Pres. Man's gotta have a code.
David Simon's face palm said it all...
You can tell Bill is not trying make her look stupid..... So much for that
Christine needs to shut her mouth if she wants to be taken seriously...
Christine, Christine, Christine : " ... When you have your rights infringed upon.." LMAO! really? You can't make this stuff up.
just watch david simon's face while christine o'donnell is talking
Point taken.
That was a good one.
Katrina vanden Heuvel is very smart and elegant woman!
O'Donnell advocating 'infringing on people's rights' Unbelievable!
Never have I seen someone more convinced of the bullshit that they're talking about.
Geez, my head is spinning after having to listen to the Ompa-lompa on the end. I would rather walk on glass then listen to Christine or Palin!
The guy in blue is like "Fuck this" 6:37
It is scary to realize how close Christine O'Donnell was to power. She's living prof how far American education has fallen.
If it makes you feel better, she went to private school.
.....Several people do where I don't base on my studies. Also, I have many friends that worked in own small businesses and I worked in one for years. They need a full time David Simon cam
the civil rights war? LOLOL
OK, but how about aborting unwanted financial responsabilities? Let's face it, abortion is about avoiding responsabilities. It is a right of men and women. Sex is about entertainment, not about reproduction.
Anyone notice how she said "the civil rights...war" instead of civil rights movement and then talk about the CIVIL WAR about the slaves??
Why do people keep asking Christine questions? Don't they know she'll start talking?
It's also difficult to defend yourself you're wrong.
His name is kinda Bill...
I agree, every single law does have all kinds of effects. That is why we can't just straight up pass a laws without looking at everything and getting input from both sides (Republicans and Democrats). When we fail to do that we get into a situation where our countries and it's systems fall apart.
What the hell, Christine O'Donnell? That was so awkward and hard to watch! The smirk on her face almost sent me through the roof!
First off, Fox does put people on their show that are intelligent and know their stuff. They just place a different side on the story. Also, just because somebody didn't study something for years doesn't mean they don't know anything about it. My main field is Physics. Wait, that lady doesn't actually think that republicans were the first people to ever disagree with slavery does she?
Bill agreed with that particular fact, but that's 150 years ago. Civil rights schooling issue was in the 1950's and 1960's.
Did you all notice that the audience was laughing at Christine O'Donnell....if that was me I would just shut up!
It is sad to see how public reacts to Christine...
The epic expression by Maher at 6:25 :-)
She was super funny on the 10th Amendment, too.
Ended it via coming down on the Federal side in an issue that ultimately boiled down to states' rights. Were such an issue confronted today, they would side with states' rights faster than Bill could light up a joint.
I'd tag O'Donnell.
Christine O'Donnell is a total babe.
I have two republican ex-girlfriends. Listening to Christine O'Donnell speak brings back memories. Bad memories.
Civil war hah , I got work in the morning !
Agreed!
love or hate bill he is right more than wrong
lol paused it at 5:00 to take a piss, and I caught bill maher looking straight into the camera lawlz, so pro
The colour of her hair, face, hands and the table are the same. She's soo coordinated, she needs to be in Vogue.
....understand that there are many variables involved in a situation and we can't just jump to conclusions so quick. That is what I do all the time. I don't understand how she even made it on a federal ticket. This scares me a little.
I've watch this episode and all I was saying is, "Bill, ok you have her back and I know you want to remain on a good terms but why are you letting Christine get away with so much nonsense?!"
i need to go smoke some pot and get those brain cells back that were lost while odonnell was talking.
It scares me to death that there is women and just people in general that think, to their very core, like this woman! God help us.
True my bad, thank you for correcting me. I must had not payed attention when writing.
If the facts don't fit in with your agenda, ignore them!
to be fair she actually seems less dangerous then Palin and Bachman. not less stupid but less dangerous
Dude, we should appreciate people like Christine O'Donnell because she's helping us out giving new voters a reason not to be republican. ;D
I thought David Simon was brilliant. And I loved the question about gay marriage. Christine was completely wrong. She's actually pretty smart. She's done her homework since witch days. Shes subjectively wrong on some issues but objectively so.
"Witch days"?
So they aren't allowed to have an input as to whether or not the child is borne, but they have to be financially responsible for it if it is?
Thank you, I appreciate the correction.

Oh, quit giving Christine O'Donnell a hard time. I wish half of our elected officials were as genuine as her.

the definition of a "republican" back THEN was VERY different from what it is NOW.
how isn't O'donnell embarassed to go on tv and talk about things she has no clue about.

I'd tap that.
If state rights are supposed to be protected under the 10th amendment, why can the federal government keep marijuana illegal...?
but doesn't the first amendment separate church and state?
