  • If you were shocked when you received your last energy bill, you're not alone - news emerged today that electricity users are being overcharged by as much as $3 billion. How have energy companies been getting away with it? Watch & share this video that explains.

Yes and no, the problem is that within the current frame work they lobby for prices to go up so that they can invest in infrastructure but there there is no rationalisation of spending and no mechanism for costs to go down. Its like upgrading the M2 highway so that you can raise the price forever.

Damn Paul Keating and his cocked up electricity vision.

Labor governments were the most recent to privatise the energy sector, though I suppose they could be considered conservative as well these days.

If they don't then they'd have trouble dealing with their conscience. Better we're numbers on a piece of paper than actual people.

Profit from all physical industries comes from charging more than the actual cost to produce the good or deliver the service.

At least we have a system that provides a state of the art supply chain. The US is in a terrible shape with the system that governs it's infrastructure spending. I personally don't mind (and can afford) paying a bit more, but then I am a single young bloke, so I am empathetic towards families and the less fortunate. It'd be a good issue for open debate... and I think I saw an Insight episode on this issue not long ago. You'll be able to find the free video podcast of that on iTunes.

There is benefit to the consumer as the towers will not need replacement as soon and there will be infrastructure available in areas when/if population expands. Australia is only lagging behind the small developed Asian nations, such as Singapore/Japan/Taiwan/South Korea, we are already ahead of America, most of Europe except for the UK and Germany but those two countries beat us because they regulate contention ratios unlike Australia. People who don't understand the internet are on both sides.

If you have done any form of work for any tier of government, you will soon realise that they treat the taxpayer like a blank cheque.

what do these energy regulators gain from us spending money on an unneccessary piece of infrastructure.
Do they make money off it? If so how? If all the money is going in to building then where is the left over 'profit' and how much is it?

Not saying they don't exist, just saying I want links to them. Do you have them, I would be keen to read.

Thats a rather American perspective. Peaceful demonstrations on the issue would show that Australians care about the problem. As well as petitions to government and also changing our energy retailers and telling them why we are switching. If enough people follow through then they will take notice.

The Labor NBN is gold plating, the investment in infrastructure today to save money in the future, how can you be selectively against the practice. Broadband plans have already increased in price too to be in line with NBN pricing schemes.

Makes me glad that my stste government did not privatise its electricity corporation.

Thank you for that. My only comment is that it would be great to link to a page of facts and figure, as I will almost certainly be asked for these if I bring it up in conversation. Slightly off topic - I watched a documentary on the ENRON trials called 'ENRON - The Smartest Guys in the Room' about a month ago. If you're outraged by this, watch that documentary - this sort of behaviour is nothing new. @mysty tell your friends, change power suppliers, ride a bike to work and turn off lights.

Interesting conclusion.. basically a free market philosophy. Instead of promoting some kind of transparency or regulation, they say consumers need to be informed to then allow the market to self regulate. Flawed.

but couldnt abbot just stop gold plating after he stops the carbon price and then say the decrease in bills was because he "scrapped the tax"

why not go to the media and start educating the public about what a huge rip off by energy companies and governments are doing about electricity bills. Let them know it isnt climate change but an underhanded way to over charge us customers.I think it should not be privatised . Necessities like electicity and water should be government run.

What they don't know is they use gold plating for a good reason in the long run getting gold plating will cost less and the good plating used in this video was very over exaggerated.

Except.... When an electricity company gold plates a transmission tower, there is no benefit to the consumer. What people like you seem to be ignoring, is that Australia is lagging behind in the tech world, because we have no fibre.
Im willing to pay premium for fibre, because its worth it. Either which way, people who don't understand the internet, probably shouldn't be governing it.
