I know we tire of remakes, but I wouldn't mind a remake of instincts. Keep the dual wielding and the superhuman abilities, but Far Cry 6 level graphics and all the quality of life improvements they've made over the years? It would be an absolute banger.
I feel like like FC6 has "too much graphics" for Instincts. I'd say the level of graphic fidelity and polygon of Apex Legends or Halo 5 would suit it better.
I wouldn't say they were underrated at the time - the multiplayer especially was a big hit in the early Xbox Live days. But they have become kind of forgotten.
I loved how Instincts grounded the more goofy elements of FarCry (2004). There's still mutants, mercs, etc. but they did a much better job on the console ports in terms of voice acting, character design, and in general much darker world building (e.g. you can find mass graves on Jacutan before Kreiger's mansion and soliders hanged by Crowe in the early game).
What I don't understand is why Ubisoft never released these games on PC, as a PC gamer I totally missed out on them, also I try avoid playing FPS games with a controller as much as possible so not having these on PC is a huge mistake. Is so strange, Ubisoft was never into making console exclusives as far as I know as all their catalog is on PC apart from these games. What a weird decision.
Loved that game FCIP goes down as one of my favorites... Predator mode on custom maps online was such an experience, I hope Ubisoft makes another one like it some day.
You can create the most bizarre maps in this game lol. Even on XBOX. It was one of the only games that allowed for No Clipping on infrastructure. For whatever reason that all changed after this game. Directly after it. You can't create weird ass maps in any of these games. It had the potential to rival Forge mode in Halo. In Farcry. You can create nigh anything and nearly any game type. In Map Editor you can choose you level size and play around in that. The not clipping on structures though is just insane, it's spherical in motion. You can play it however you want.
Love your analysis of the stealth gameplay compared to modern games. It's one of the reasons these games just hit a spot many modern games don't. Bought myself a copy of this in a thrift shop last year to revisit old memories. It's part of the backward compatibility program too, so no need to dust of the ol' 360.
The stealth was my favourite part of the game, would be great to see these mechanics in modern games more often where the devs trust us to use our senses rather than the UI. Currently playing through FC2 and it takes this idea to the extreme!
These two games were a part of the holy trinity of Xbox Live in 2006/7. And yes I consider them as one game. These, Splinter Cell and Halo were the games that hooked me into online gaming, and they will forever hold a special place in my heart. Far Cry Instincts in particular as it was the first game I played where the community really had the freedom to create things. The amount of roleplay, obstacle courses, or just random predator game modes that I played back then were incredible, and the map maker was a great tool to help bring people to come and play with you. One of these Far Cry was also the first game I played where using VOIP would make your characters mouth move. It all felt so immersive back then.
This video was a wonderful nostalgia trip of my favorite childhood game, thanks for the quality video! I miss the gameplay and story so much and wish it would make a return to its feral roots. First time seeing one of your videos and I believe you have a great talent for it, have a good one sir 👍
I deeply enjoyed this game. I just bought it again a couple months ago. I enjoyed how you start so grass roots and eventually become a power house. I also appreciated how this game portrays the "evil" mercenaries. They aren't some super group of lackies. They are just dudes paid to do a job. I'll always remember the later missions when they are incredibly out of their league and just trying to survive. It's a good way to humanize what is ordinaly cannon fodder.
Instincts was one of the formative games that turned me into the gamer I am today. Along with the pre-Blacklist Splinter Cell games, Instincts fed a hunger in me for stealth that other games at the time just could not satiate. Between stealth and turning my character into as much of a god as possible, FCI was the GOAT. Not to mention I have always longed to possess animalistic special abilities in reality, so it definitely scratched a big itch for me. Also, I only ever played Instincts on the Original Xbox, and I can attest to the branch trap being endlessly entertaining. Got around to Evolution about 7+ years after release, but didn't really mind the return to the same abilities and general mechanics as Instincts. Also, I still have never played 2, nor do I have any plans to do so. 3-5 were fine, though never really hit the same, and I was deeply disappointed that none of them brought back any semblance of the primal abilities. New Dawn was an interesting alternative that I didn't hate. Won't ever touch 6, looked like trash, gameplay-wise, and I only picked up 5 because it took place in the States and felt a bit true to life for me. Anyway, great video, man, I left a like 🤘
Nah farcry instincts predator is THE best farcry game, multi player anyway. I was addicted. Our team (clan) was totally unbeaten we never even lost one single game ever. I miss those days.
I was going into middle school when I got my 360 and I got Predator after being obsessed with Instincts on the OG Xbox. I spent every waking moment in that map creator! I hosted lobbies to show off my maps and nobody ever was mean to me for being a “squeaker” lol everybody was so nice and supportive and always asking to see what new maps I made. It was the most fun I had online and is a great memory to look back on. TWIGZnGUNZ, if you see this, I’ll never forget you bro! I hope you’re doing well 💜 “The older the wiser, the younger the brighter.”
A remake of Instincts would be great. However, I would also think that a new Far Cry title with the Predator mechanics could be amazing. I just don't know if Ubisoft are capable of it though..
I loved the old farcry games, they were really cool at the time and I never understood why they got rid of the superhuman abilities. It was what made it unique and fun.
Don’t even get me started on the multiplayer or the level creator when it came out. They had a game type where it was one predator vs 8 mercenary. I loved this game.
I love this game, I have some of the most precious gaming memories of my life with this game, playing splitscreen with friends. That said, the gameplay hasn't aged well. I remember playing it a lot during the lockdown. People were abusing the going prone animation.
What I take away from modern Far Cry is that it condenses down the open levels from the original into isolated sections within an open world. It was something that seemed cool when a console's limitations were hindered but the fact they have since become more abundant in power this same approach has become more exhausting. I genuinely believe that if that same concept from yesteryear was expanded it would make for a truly exceptional experience.
Yes it is still great even though been dead for a long time. The multiplayer modes were superb, loved the way you could throw the sample in their version of CTF and how you could only hold certain weapons while carrying it and the sample lighting up so could be seen better in fog / night maps. Seek & Secure / Capture The Station (their version of Domination) was also very cool how you only had one station showing at any time and when captured it moved to another spot. Predator mode was a lot of fun on the right maps the Predators (hunters) could see a scent trail of the players (Mercs) it worked much better in darker maps or ones with fog, and the heart beat as the Preds got closer it went faster which was very atmospheric knowing they were close but you couldn't see sometimes. You could go prone yet all the other Far Cry games afterwards you couldn't, also you could use your knife and attack other players in the water, speaking of water I think the waves and look of the water in Far Cry Instincts Predator was the best of all the Far Cry games. There were 5 multiplayer modes, up to 16 players, 12 vehicles, ziplines weapon placement in user made maps - for me this game had the best multiplayer modes of all time, in the video the tree traps were shown also you could zoom in with the binoculars and hear other players talking. It was fast paced and a lot of fun. The solo game was quite long winded and would feel a little old now but still a blast and an adrenaline rush in places especially those later volcano type levels, The evolution story was a lot different but some sections were really cool, it is very tough to collect all the samples in the solo game. The vehicles and glider handled better than all the other vehicles in the Far Cry games afterwards IMO, a remake / remaster would be really cool if it allowed 2 or up to 4 player coop. Some of the maps that came with the game were also really sweet especially Hollow Town / Mercy Creek and a few others.
are you emulating the game or playing it on a native x360? i'm asking this cuz i have no idea if x360 emulators progressed to the point where the game is actually playable, i tried it last year and it ran/looked like crap
Far Cry Instincts + Instincts: Predator WERE Far Cry to me. Me and my friends spent hours in the map maker making our own multiplayer maps. I was disappointed with Far Cry 2 and to me it just went downhill from there.
Farcry 2 was definitely a disappointment and nothing like instincts predator. Bought the game on my lunch break the first day it released and couldn't wait to get home to play it. Immediately was pissed off that there were now weapon crates instead of dropping individual guns and the physics of the atvs were different and made to be more realistic (Slower and no jumps). Not to mention that it already came with a bunch of pre built buildings and didn't have as much storage as the first. I spent several hours making a very detailed map and had only completed about 25 percent when I maxed out lol.
Interesting how Far Cry Instincts’ Feral Powers ended up being similar to the Nanosuit in Crysis 1. You have super strength, super speed, the ability to easily tag enemies, jump super far, etc. Only thing you lack in Instincts is Cloak. Wonder if Crytek gave Ubisoft some ideas, since even though they didn’t make Far Cry Instincts, they still had credit so maybe they had some oversight. Either way, once Crytek was no longer involved in the series, the games sucked.
the first farcry stealth is usless cause the enemies spot you from the other side of the island and those damn rocket launcher guys omg they're the worst

The Instincts/Evolution story is pretty bad, but I feel like Stephen Dorff sold Jack pretty well. I've always had a slim hope they would bring him back to voice someone in future FC titles, or even just acknowledge the series pre-FC3 at all, but that seems really unlikely.
I gotta be real, I just downloaded it on my x one and... Yeesh, is this infuriatingly broken. I wish I could post a video in the comments to show you guys the red barrel that blows up ten percent of the time as I unload clips into it from barely 30 yards or the headshots that don't actually kill them. The biggest insult is they did nothing to polish it up between the OG Xbox and the 360, which could have made it the game it was meant to be.
The controls aren't the best tbh, really sluggish and slow. I did get used to it after a few hours, but compared to how fluid everything is today it was still well behind.
That's just how the controls are for Predator on the 360. Unfortunately the controls aren't optimized that well for this game. The better version is the original Xbox version, the controls are much smoother. For whatever reason Ubi screwed the controls on the 360 port.
I know we tire of remakes, but I wouldn't mind a remake of instincts. Keep the dual wielding and the superhuman abilities, but Far Cry 6 level graphics and all the quality of life improvements they've made over the years? It would be an absolute banger.

Awesome video. Quality analysis. The multiplayer in these games was FANTASTIC and the map editor was GOATed. Core gaming memory for me.

I think that calling those Xbox Far Cry's "underrated" is appropriate for once, since they really are not all too well known.
I wouldn't say they were underrated at the time - the multiplayer especially was a big hit in the early Xbox Live days. But they have become kind of forgotten.
