      The best thing is that he’s done more than this. Creating a whole animated series, producing concept albums, and organizing game jams. The talent certainly isn’t limited to this or that. Part of the struggle is also finding the drive to consistently innovate while fighting your own flaws and dealing with a fickle online ecosystem. It’s all certainly admirable.

    • @Starkride48
      @Starkride48 Год назад +5

      They’re not quite homonyms. The final vowel of “Dokuso” meaning unique is elongated, so it’s technically “dokusou,” whereas the word meaning poison is just “dokuso.” Putting that “u” after the “o” looks awkward so it’s often left off when romanized.

    I just came across the word dokusou (独創) this week in my Japanese studies. I had no idea that specific word was one of Nintendos guiding principles. What a weird coincidence.
    The service Jisho translates it as originality. While these past years hasn't been stellar for Nintendo when it comes to games that expresses originality. I think if you look at the literal meaning when you read each kanji by itself. I would read it like self (doku) and creation (sou): self-creation. specific meanings being Alone/spontaneously/single/(Germany???) (独) and Genesis/start/originate (創). I think that really encompasses Nintendo with always going their own way. Sometimes stubbornly to their own detriment. But often in a way that brings success in an unexpected fashion. While Super Mario Bros Wonder by itself does not look very Dokusou to me. The fact that they still insist on creating 2d mario games and market them as their big mainline game is unheard of compared to other games publishers and is very Dokusou to me.

    • @ariwl1
      @ariwl1 Год назад +3

      That makes sense to me. Nintendo makes what they want and we all take it or leave it. There was a time in gaming where 2D/3D mascot platformers were to games what first-person shooters were in the 2000's. Nowadays, platforming games in the major developer space is dominated almost entirely by Nintendo with the occasional Sonic game here and there. Nintendo really only iterates on themselves, and it works because even if nothing has really changed in years, even games that are heavily inspired by Nintendo games don't feel like a Nintendo game.

  • @GreyGoshawk

    独創
    ど く そう
    Do Ku So U
    When transliterating from Japanese to English. The sounds that extends the length of the syllable is often left out.
    For example, if you directly transliterate the characters for Tokyo and Osaka:
    Toukyou
    Oosaka
    For a native english speaker without Japanese knowlege the odds are they'd pronouce it "more incorrectly" with the actual spelling.
    Another style is to use the line on time to indicate a longer syllable sound e.g. dokusō

    Then i realised it was a bar to show how each item made you feel individually and the excitement of not knowing what was coming made me feel -- high wonder.
    Then i realised if all it was, was a 1 to 10 wonder scale bar why was there vertical waves at different heights? The unimportants of the waves on the wonder bar made me overall feel -- moderate wonder.

And that's for a game that you had to pay $20 extra for the ring! Guaranteed to come back in some way in the future. I'm actually surprised they haven't taken advantage of Ring Fit's success to release a $10-20 DLC pack on Switch with new workouts etc -- would sell huge and be so easy to do.

    Just to clarify on "Dokuso", although it's spelt the same in English they're pronounced differently in Japanese.
    Dokuso (独創) meaning originality should really be spelt 'Dokusou'; the 'o' sound is extended at the end of the word.
    Dokuso (毒素) meaning poison ends with a more abrupt and sharp 'so' sound.

FF7's story just comes off as a bit incoherent, and it was still early days of how to translate JRPGs into a 3D environment, so there was a lot to improve on. FF6 is the peak of the 2D JRPG era and shot for the stars and seems to have delivered and go beyond on all fronts within that standard. That is how I would prefer it done, bring back the real deal rebuilt with current codebase, maybe yeah add some post-game content or maybe some DLC if you want it. But then seriously consider making a sequel that can take some risks on changing how it plays new features/characters similar look/design. The music is getting re-done too, can't wait.

      Arms, LABO, Astral Chain, Ringfit, is about good enough I imagine. They were all received relatively well and sold well enough. But the problem is, all those studios making those games are also working on multiple much bigger franchises as well. Hard to crank out new IPs, when Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Animal Crossing etc, need their new entries as well. I think they may need to invest in more partnerships though, but most third party for hire devs are either dead, were bought out, or are basically porting houses these days.

    Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the Resident Evil remakes past RE1 are re-imaginings, not remakes, and invented new strengths to replace old ones. Thats just making up your own definition of the word "remake" - it sounds like in your mind that remake should be something that is shot for shot the original... whereas remake is really just to make something again. There is no hard rule that says remaking something has to be the exact same as the original. I can understand that's what someone would want, but that doesn't mean these examples are not remakes.

I had already seen FF7 when I played this for the first. This remake looks to 1:1 capture the original style. If they don't mess this up I think this will be the definitive way to play this. As a fan this is exactly what I want.
      But I agree what Kyles sentiment. This would be more in the style of an HD remaster rather then a remake. Though it may be a nitpick. There are similarities to this and Myst(2021) where they went from having prerendered 3d sequences of the original game to actually have the game running real time in 3d.

      Have to look at that and is correct, it looks like the journalists screwed up the write of the interviews since they said: Dokuso (look at 2:23).
      And it looks like the culprit here was the final "o" since is write as "ō", not sure what the symbol means?, but I'm going to guess that is a way to pronounce "ou" in a word.

      @@glungusgongus The game itself seems good and made with quality, but it is fundamentally not what I would consider an acceptable remake. Not just because of the completely different gameplay concept, but the story changes, and the fact that it is an incomplete release that is being stretched to a probably decade-long development time experienced as a new game at each increment. They don't even continue off each other, you'll basically be level 1 each time, so there is not even a feeling of game progress continuity

      He just seems to want remakes that aren't actually remakes. Or actually ARE remakes, depending on your definition of remake. Not just a graphics overhaul, but changes to the entire gameplay mechanics and even changes to the story so that it feels wholly new again, so that it accomplishes what the original accomplished in its day. But that is never gonna happen anyway, since we now are familiar with all these characters and how the story is generally going to go, and that should be a reboot's mission statement, not a remake's, if you ask me. ReBOOT is like what Mortal Kombat 1 is doing, it's not remaking MK1, it is diverting from its conventions entirely (at least story and character-wise)

    • @cosmosofinfinity
      @cosmosofinfinity Год назад

      I expect the DQ4 stuff flew right over his head. But if the game relies on previous series familiarity for its sense of wonder and can't have that come across in the trailer itself, that probably would feed into his point anyway
