Suggestion: stick a little bit of steel wool or steel scrubby (like used to wash dishes) in all those open drain pipes. Why, you ask? To keep dirt dobbers, wasps, spiders, 🐍SNAKES , lizards, for going up the pipes. Yeeeesss they can clog up a pipe and yes they will crawl up it. Great video

placing blocks with holes vertical will allow them to settle and sink individually and cause your base to tip. To minimize potential tipping / leaning of your foundation, place the 1st set of blocks with holes horizontal.
Something to consider, is on one barrel to put a fitting up towards the top, and one towards the bottom, connected by some clear tubing. This way you can see your volume level in case you have not had rain in a while.
Or (speaking as a complete novice), on the clear tube cover it with black tape and cut out a rectangular slice and cover the exposed part of the clear tube with painter's tape. Then you can lift it up as high as you need to look at the water level and reseal it back down without it being sticky. But what do I know, never done anything like this before - but my mind thinks my ideas could work. 😊
My experience is the rain barrels filled up in about 5 minutes with a good rain. Drain should take overflow as far away from greenhouse as possible to prevent damage.
Nice build! I'm saving this for reference. One suggestion, maybe extend the drip/overflow away from the foundation of your building. Over time it will rot out your wood quicker and compromise that area.
Or dig a small trench under the spouts and angle it to go deeper down a little as a run off as you end it a foot or two away from the greenhouse frame?

Giving me ideas and inspiration, maybe something for others to consider, 1. You don’t necessarily need to glue fittings above your overflows, ie any part of the system that does not “hold” water. Consider mounting brackets for support as needed and maybe two self tapping screws to secure joints. I’ve also used hot glue in non pressure segments. 2. Design your downspout and feed plumbing first to determine the max hight of the top of your barrel(s). Ie water always flows down… 3. Keep in mind water weighs 8.345 lb/gal, your base and ground needs to support 400 lbs / 50 gl barrel. 4. While small diameter pipe is fine for venting, overflow outlets should be sized to match maximum inflow, The multiple small diameter overflows is clever and will probably be able to manage. Consider a T fitting with a short vertical stack instead of a 90* downturn to improve vent and drain. Or otherwise separating the two systems. 5. A 1” manifold is most likely sufficient but don’t go smaller, too small and your primary barrel will over flow before completely filling any down stream barrels. Similar to overflow size considerations. 6 consider adding unions or threaded connections in your manifold to make breakdown for maintenance or moving easier. 7. Add T fittings and screw caps at manifold ends for maintenance, flushing out barrels or future upgrades. Nice system thanks for the inspiration!!
Do you realize that by drilling those holes in the top for venting you could do that by loosening the bung on the top. By doing that you don't have to worry about bugs getting inside those hold even though they're small a mosquito can get in that small hole and start breeding and laying its larvae.

FYI on overflow: area = π*r*r, so a 2" inflow is 4x as much as a 1" outflow. That said, you only have a 1" exit/entry to each barrel through the manifold, so input will never exceed overflow capacity for the middle 3 barrels - only the end barrels. You'd be better off putting a 2" overflow on just the end barrels

I was going to say about the drums needing venting in order to fill, but then you added the overflow to each drum which basically provided a vent for each drum. Looks great and hopefully it does what is required of the system.
If you alternate the blocks from side to side gonig in different directions after each set then you can better lock them in. As seen these will br prone to either falling forward or outwards. If you alternate directions they will lock in better.

Doesnt matter what barrel it goes in. And all you have to do is hold the end of the hose above the top of the barrel and lower it till water comes out that's your water level (pun intended)
Love the idea...I would maybe just compact the soil after you did your first scrap, also the drain/bypass is a bit close to the structure I would probably put a downspout extension to lead extra water away to it doesn't erode to close to structure.

Excellent set up , very well put together , the run off safety measure flood prevention , exactly right . Vents the barrels at same time , netting on bottom of run off pipes will stop insects crawling up into the barrels , just a thought . Your the man Sam . .
With the hydraulics, you only needed 1 overflow outlet on one barrel. The water level equalizes in all the barrels before it would reaches the overflow. You did not need to drill vents for each barrel, the overflow would serve that purpose .

You need a better foundation under each column. You should place two 8 x 16 x 4 inch concrete blocks at 90 degrees to the column blocks. This will give about 1 pound per square inch pressure on the ground instead of the greater than 5 pounds per square inch of your current design. Your columns may start to lean if the ground get wet under the columns. Good Luck, there were some great hints in your video! Note: If you replace the bottom block with a 8 x 16 x 4 inch block plus two more under that one you will end up with the same height. Should be able to jack up the barrels when empty, replace the columns. Once they are all updated then re-level the top horizontal boards.

I'm going to build it , but I will cover the air vent holes by cutting a round piece of plastic mesh and glue them using a glue that will stick to the barrel material just to make sure no bugs will try to enter the barrels . For example, mosquitoes. To tell you the truth , nobody on You Tube explains so well all the steps the way you do . I'm writing from P.R. . In some more months we will have the storms season and what I saw in this video will come very handy . For drinking and cooking water it's just a matter of having stored tens of gallons of it way before the s. season , and the water that will keep being collected in plastic barrels can be used for other things . It will be a matter of just connecting a hose to the faucet in the barrel . You have no idea what you have done for me . GRACIAS !!

@@eddieramos6883 I would utilize the bungs in the barrel bc they are pipe thread and you can screw a pipe fitting right into them. 2" npt. Place the barrels upside down and connect them that way and then vent by drilling and tapping the bottom but now top 1/8 pipe and connect together with cheap compression fittings and 1/4 ice make line to a filter or to a ptrap type air loc. Then the over flow would be plumbed into the bottom manifold and run up higher than the barrel height and 180 back down so you can use full capacity or the barrels but put a vent hole in the top of that 180 at the top to prevent a siphon.

you need a ball inside the first flush tube to stop the trash that will be floating in that dirty water from going back into the rain barrels when the water level reaches the "Y" pipe, Dust, debris, and bird poop will float on the water and rise in the pipe as the water rises. The ball blocks the opening and prevents it from contaminating the stored water.

Stellar work love to see it. A tip I may add is a shut off at the end of your first flush system. It dosent need to drain constantly. Leaving shut off rain will flush and fill up the drain with its dirty water. But the time it gets to the top all dust and dirt will settle at the bottom. Then after each rain just drain that dirt out. This way you no spilling good water after the room has cleared. Keep up the good work!

One cool feature you can easily add to your setup is making your first barrel a radial filter like the one used in aquaponics. Or you could make all your barrels be radial filters so your storage is also an amazing filtering setup. The main con is that you would no longer be able to have all your barrels be equal level at all times. But if you plan on using this water for human consumption I guess it might be worth the effort.

Nice set up. Suggestions since I have a system similiar to yours. On the elbows going into the barrels, there is no need to glue them together the pvc fitting will stay in place. If concern of them seperating just drill and screw two small stainless steel screws to them on either side. This will allow you to remove the intakes if you need to in the future. I’ve done this on on smaller systems and while it’s a nice convenience, it will grow algae even in indirect sunlight

I think someone may have mentioned by now, but why not get a couple more seals and put a sight glass tube for water levels in center barrel?

You could, yes. The netting is paint strainer/filter netting from the hardware store. It's a thin mesh.
a nylon or pantyhose will work too, probably cheaper too.

@@sam-and-angela you're welcome. Yes, I earned that nickname in the military back in 2006. I was a Hull Maintenance Technician in the Navy and spent quite a bit of time in the waste management area. It stuck so I embraced it. May as well make lemonade, right.
I'm going to build it , but I will cover the air vent holes by cutting a round piece of plastic mesh and glue them using a glue that will stick to the barrel material just to make sure no bugs will try to enter the barrels . For example, mosquitoes. To tell you the truth , nobody on You Tube explains so well all the steps the way you do . I'm writing from P.R. . In some more months we will have the storms season and what I saw in this video will come very handy . For drinking and cooking water it's just a matter of having stored tens of gallons of it way before the s. season , and the water that will keep being collected in plastic barrels can be used for other things . It will be a matter of just connecting a hose to the faucet in the barrel . You have no idea what you have done for me . GRACIAS !!

@@eddieramos6883 I would utilize the bungs in the barrel bc they are pipe thread and you can screw a pipe fitting right into them. 2" npt. Place the barrels upside down and connect them that way and then vent by drilling and tapping the bottom but now top 1/8 pipe and connect together with cheap compression fittings and 1/4 ice make line to a filter or to a ptrap type air loc. Then the over flow would be plumbed into the bottom manifold and run up higher than the barrel height and 180 back down so you can use full capacity or the barrels but put a vent hole in the top of that 180 at the top to prevent a siphon.

How about adding a simple float so you can assess the water level, far less work then a sight pipe.
Ooo I like that! I've been thinking about how to plumb in a sight pipe without loosing every bit of water I've collected and flooding the greenhouse. A float would work and save the water, too! Thank you for this idea!

you need a ball inside the first flush tube to stop the trash that will be floating in that dirty water from going back into the rain barrels when the water level reaches the "Y" pipe, Dust, debris, and bird poop will float on the water and rise in the pipe as the water rises. The ball blocks the opening and prevents it from contaminating the stored water.
Sam, is there a reason you put the barrels inside instead of outside? I was wondering if it took up a lot of space in the greenhouse. LOVE the drone footage!
Yep! :) They will absorb the heat from the sun and help to regulate the temperature inside the greenhouse overnight in cool weather.

Stellar work love to see it. A tip I may add is a shut off at the end of your first flush system. It dosent need to drain constantly. Leaving shut off rain will flush and fill up the drain with its dirty water. But the time it gets to the top all dust and dirt will settle at the bottom. Then after each rain just drain that dirt out. This way you no spilling good water after the room has cleared. Keep up the good work!
That soft ground is going to give way over time because you didn't set the foundation properly.
Someone who sees the same problem as I do if front or back settle more than the other it.could fall over

Science FTW! I like this design - not unnecessarily complex, but not so simple that everything falls apart when you try to use it.
One cool feature you can easily add to your setup is making your first barrel a radial filter like the one used in aquaponics. Or you could make all your barrels be radial filters so your storage is also an amazing filtering setup. The main con is that you would no longer be able to have all your barrels be equal level at all times. But if you plan on using this water for human consumption I guess it might be worth the effort.
Wait, I need help. Is there a really good explanation on you tube for this? That's what I was thinking the whole time should we find a way to filter this or do something to be able to drink it

Nice set up. Suggestions since I have a system similiar to yours. On the elbows going into the barrels, there is no need to glue them together the pvc fitting will stay in place. If concern of them seperating just drill and screw two small stainless steel screws to them on either side. This will allow you to remove the intakes if you need to in the future.
