  • I've always had it in the back of my head that I'm no longer a kid.
That I need to have a plan of action.
That I need to make money and be successful
And for some reason the more I tell myself that, the more lost I feel.
I know this video could sound all over the place but I wanted to share how I felt, and not only that, but the best way I can go about it.
I can't be the only young person that feels like this, I know it.

Jack I’m in my 50s and a university level educator. I have had so many adults enter our program in order to become teachers late in their lives. I’ve had students in their late 40s thru early 60s. People who were entering a 2nd even third profession. What they all had in common is deciding to go thru motions after high school because it’s what society and family expects. College, job, relationships, marriage, house, kids. They weren’t happy, in part because they weren’t doing what they truly wanted. But didn’t know what that was until later in life.
I tell people all time. Your 20s are to get to know yourself. Who are you as a person? What matters to you? What are your values? That’s why gap years between high school and college or trade school is so important.
It’s ok not to know what’s next at your age. You mentioned that living on the boat has become routine. Life on land, with the day to day of going to work, commuting to work, coming home to whatever responsibilities are there…. That’s routine. It can become monotonous for people. For far too many very little distinguishes one day from another.
Give yourself some grace. Whether you continue with boat life or decide to stay on land for a while …Try not to put pressure on yourself to figure it out right away.

I'm 23 and I agree 100%. That is the best answer you could give to someone that is trying to figure out what he/she wants to do with his life.
I spent 4 years in college, graduated, but now I realize that it didn't make me happier.
What I want for now, is to try as much things as possible (including travelling far from mom and dad) and we'll see where this leads me to.

this is a good point. I am one of those who re-entered university in my 40s more than 20 years after my first degree. I was a stockbroker for 15 years, but now I`d rather read about the Roman Empire and learn how to read and write runes. Don`t stress, just keep learning and growing. There is not just one right path for you. You can make new paths or follow multiple. Some people get to work with their passion , but most have to work for money and realize themself in the freetime

Jack, I’m 69 years old and have changed my career 3 times and have been successful in all of them. Don’t pressure yourself to figure it all out at 20 years old. Life is like sailing in a way, strong winds, light winds, storms and a whole lot of pleasure on your journey. Go easy, have fun and know that if you are good to yourself and to the people around you everything will fall into place. Best wishes, Rob

Jack, I am 68 and the biggest piece of advice that I give to my children and grandchildren and their friends as they have all struggled through the time of their lives you are in now is this: trust your heart, don't listen to all the "logical" noise your brain is is sending you, it is just that, noise. don't compare yourself to others, really none of them have a clue either, no matter what it looks like from the outside. Your heart will tell you what is right for you. Open yourself to as many experiences as you possible can and eventually you find that something that you just cannot ignore, that is a passion. and that is the dream to follow. And somehow along that way you will find the people who will fill your life with joy.

Surprise. You’re totally normal. It’s natural to want to spread your wings AND a complete complement to your family that you feel strong enough to WANT to. Maybe you could start by hopping off somewhere and working with teaching sailing or water sports? Like at a posh resort? Like a “gap year”.. Discovering what you don’t want to do, can lead you to what you DO want to do😁

I’ll say this, buddy. You were raised on nature and adventure - and you know how to do social media; you don’t have to be constricted to a boat with your family to do that and even to make a living doing that.
So I would say keep those things with you and there’s no limit to what you can do and experience. And keep Finn close.

Turning 20 in 4 months, a student in college, and question every aspect of my life everyday. There is something so human and heartful knowing that someone else with a completely different lifestyle and experience is feeling the same exact way I am. These videos are such a breath of fresh air, day by day I do believe we will figure it out, never completely but at least some parts of the puzzle. Your potential is only limited to what you think you are.

As someone from your Dad's generation I say there is no rush. When young we think we need to do something and catch up and that we are being left behind, it's human nature. You are exactly where you need to be. What your parents have achieved took a lifetime. They have given you a head start in life and experiences that will help you throughout. You have to work at it, and I think you have the right mindset and openness but be patient. Don't just work for works sake find that niche, find that passion and you will be happier for it. You have 51K followers on RUclips. At your age most people have never left the US. If I was to give any advice, I would say to do some remote study course while traveling get some business class / certificates etc. and finance certificates. Look at understanding more about those areas. I hear your Dad's advice and trust me his words are wise. No Credit, work for what you want and don't work for Credit. Good luck and God bless to you and your family.

You are not alone! You are normal. I am 80. Your feelings are completely normal and have been for centuries. Times change, but human nature does not. Main thing is don't panic. Ride it out. You will land somewhere you like. Might be several changes, but it will work out. In the meantime, whatever you do to earn money, be good, and dedicated to what you do and go beyond what is expected. Ultimately people notice. There will be times when you feel screwed over but ultimately, someone will notice your dedication and will springboard you to something greater. Every job you are doing is the most important job in your life at the time. Treat it that way.

Your a great guy, who was brought up by a great family. Trust your heart and your intuition. If you feel like bigger or greater things are out there then by all means go seize the moment and do what you desire. I have a feeling once you leave that boat with your family's support, you will be planning trips back to it to be back in paradise soon enough. It's a big world out there and ripe for the picking, stay smart and stick to your morals and you'll be fine. Can't wait to see what ya get into next brother. 💪

What a heart-felt video. You're entering adulthood after an amazing childhood. If you set out on your own, you can start your own travel videos with all of your experience you've gotten from your boat travels. Or maybe do research videos for science or production companies. There's a whole world of opportunities out there for you to choose from. But when you leave, keep very close to your siblings and your parents. When I left home, I became somewhat estranged from my family, not because I wanted to, but because we all lived in different areas of the country. Now, as a retired person, I'm still trying to catch up on what I missed. I regret not calling everyone regularly and planning vacations to see them. I just got caught up in working for a living and trying to survive. I'm sure that you and your siblings will do just fine as you progress into adulthood. Happy travels to you all.

As an almost 18 year old that lives in Los Angeles and is prepping to go to college, not me nor any of my friends have it together. It might seem like we all know what we're doing from the outside but we're all struggling and just as confused as you so just know you're not alone. We're all stressed as hell about our futures even if I live on land and you live on a boat.

I am also 20, and it is always a relief to know that other people out there are struggling with the same things. It makes you feel less alone, and the problems seem smaller.
Theres something about realising we have completed two whole decades of our lives and are now adults makes everything seem much more serious. But really we have only been adults for two years and are still learning how to live.
I feel like there is such pressure to get 'life' started and it's hard to remember that life is not a race and we don't always have to be embarking on some great endeavour. We don't need to achieve something to be valid in our humanness.

We just saw our fourth child off to begin her life on the mainland. We live on a tiny island, and much like a boat, there’s not a lot of opportunities to launch one’s life here. She feels just like you, but we are confident that she will find her passion and forge her own unique path to success because we have given her the tools to stay grounded. Your parents gave you those same tools, we can clearly see it. So, when you get to America and slide into the river of life, you’ll be equipped to ride the rapids and avoid the whirlpools. Jacko, mate I am a mother to a 20 year old boy, he’s just finished 4 years apprenticeship & is now a fully qualified plumber.
Now that he has his qualifications, he’s not sure he wants to stick to plumbing the same crap every single day.
He’s also a long way from being able to save for a house, as the market is un-reachable.
It’s normal to stress about the direction you want your life to go in & it doesn’t always go to plan.
My advice is to just be open to new opportunities & let the universe guide you organically.
If you do enjoy boat life, there are always vessels that need to be taken across oceans with crew.
I hope you look back fondly on your life. It’s been awesome for us watching you grow up too.
Don’t overthink it too much, mate. 🤙🏽

As a parent of four kids, now ages 25-35, here are my undoubtedly imperfect observations. First, a varied travel experience over 7 years has educated you in ways that rival an academic experience. Probably even better. But you won't realize how much you've learned until you move on to your next phase and get the new perspective that inevitably comes with it. Second, even travel becomes routine and, after 7 years, and, after living under the same roof as your parents, it's time to strike out on your own. Third, It will be a trial and error process finding the right path. The saying goes it takes 10,000 hours of doing it to be become expert at something. The trick is to keep trying until you land on something that suits your needs. Good luck, Jack.

    Hey Jack :)
I'm famous for long letters. And since you don't really have a permanent mailbox I thought this was my best chance.
This could not have come at a better timing. I turned 21 today and have spent the last 6 years diving deep in my thoughts. I am so introverted and such a deeper thinker that I feel like I skipped the 'I don't care' or 'reckless' side of being a teenager altogether. I was born in New Zealand, but my parents come from Germany. My first language is German actually but I spent most of my life in Australia and graduated at a Steiner school here. I have moved many times throughout my childhood and being bilingual has given me a lens through which I can see the world in 2 versions of life almost.
As I graduated year 12, I spent a few months working at a cafe and partly online doing data analysis. I never had a dream of becoming something. I just wanted to be me. But man I had no idea how hard it was to just be, rather than become something like society (most of it anyway) sets as an example for us. I got really homesick for my European roots and have spent 10 months with my relatives since October last year and I'm so glad I did.
While other people my age live 'typical' lives, going to uni, studying abroad, or even, on occasion, seeing people similar to my age travel the world and being bold, I couldn't for the life of me travel alone for a long period of time. I mean, I could, but my mind struggled. And somehow I ended up working full time as a marketing assistant remotely, landing back at 'home' in Australia with my parents and sisters, living life how it has always been but at the same time it doesn't feel like it will ever be the same again...and I'm feeling a new chapter shaping, no matter if I'm conscious of it or not.
I have so many interests, like photography, travel, mindfulness, personal growth and gardening. I feel like there are so many lives to live that 1 life won't be enough. Sometimes the unspoken expectations of the majority of society whisper in my ear and I spiral into self-doubt. But that won't lead me anywhere. Even if it's 'comfortable' or 'will keep me safe'.
I want to lead by example. Authenticity and living life at my pace is what I want. And a family. And it's hard admitting this because I've made it to 21, still living at home, never been on any dates or felt like I have become fully independent. Yet I have the most loving and patient family that I could ask for so I sometimes wonder how my mind can block me so stubbornly of the life I could be living. But I'll find a way. One step at a time. Maybe those steps aren't as lonely as I first believed them to be :)
I guess what I'm trying to say is; Hi, I'm another soul that can relate so well with what you expressed and I wanted to share part of my story in case you see this and realise that you're not alone with walking a different path honest to you. Whatever that may look like. I think in the end, all that matters is that we live life that fulfils us.
Do what makes you happy, even if it's a full plate of interests.
Keep going with whatever gives you energy. Keep sharing. Keep growing.
    All the best from Australia,
    Hannah Endres

SO WELL SAID Jack !, I'm 61 and this picture of me is sailing in Hawaii in the 90's, I had no idea what I wanted to be at this point, I did want to be married to the girl I was with and we're still together. But, family has always been more important then things to me. My Uncle sparked my love of sailing. We would sail the short distance to Catalina Island off the shore of California, and on the return - he'd let me take control of the tiller "Just point toward that hill" He'd say and the few times I did at 9 -10 years old would be my last until this day in Hawaii off Lahaina, and to this day I regret not giving up... other less important things, for life on or near the water, if only on weekends. "What if all works out" Dream big like your parents, Love well like all of you and you'll find what your looking for - Go get your dreams !!!, Cheers, Scott

Love this post. I’m here to tell you those feelings come up a different stages of ones life, it’s normal and yes can be frustrating. I’ve found out the trick is finding balance but being at peace regardless. You have done so much at such a young age. My advice is to change course and see where it leads you. You already know what Jack wants you are just struggling on how to obtain it. Wishing you the best of luck. Don’t be hard on yourself, we all go thru at some point in our lives and more than once. ⛵️

Jack you have something most of us don't have, world experience at a very young age. And great parents. Thank your parents for that wonderful gift. You have your whole life a head of you. Everyone makes mistakes in life. Learn to get back up and grow from these lessons. Life is a long road of twists and turns. Stay the course, you have the tools to navigate through these rough moments. Success comes with patience. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter of living.

No one has their life together at 20 years old. Find a passion, stick with it- stay away from social media influencers- most of the time it’s all show. It’s time to build yours. It won’t be easy but life a journey. From the looks of it, you have a great support system to help you along the way. Growth takes time and patience. 🤙🏾

Listening to you just now, I flashed back to a twenty-year-old version of myself, and I had the same thoughts then as you just communicated now almost word for word. 20-year-old me was nervous because I wasn't following the plan that everyone else was, and I felt adrift. I didn't know what I wanted to do other than live in the moment. Being adrift worked out, because I found a path that led to another and another. Now I know that I've always been where I needed to be. You have a unique perspective; you and your family have done what a lot of other people dream about doing, keep doing what you are doing, and your talents and passions will choose a path forward.

This video came out exactly when I need it most. I'm also in my young 20s, I also travel the world, and live a very unconventional life. I feel so grateful I get to see different parts of the world every day but at the same time it becomes routine and you feel guilty asking for a 'normal' life and going through 'normal' 20 year old things. RUclips has helped me document and appreciate the places I travel to but at the same time raises a standard of trying to make your life look 'aesthetic enough' if that makes sense. I'm with you.. because finding out where you belong in the world is hard but I can't wait to follow your journey and see where you decide to take your life. sending you best wishes, we'll figure it out xx

Jack, that was beautiful! I love this serious and thoughtful side of you. You are asking the right questions! You are already clear on some of the most important thing, the ones you listed are amazing. Of course the agitation about not yet knowing is totally normal and healthy. You are already many leagues ahead of most people your age… And most people far beyond your age.
At 50, looking back it is the fear of doing the “wrong” thing that has held me back the most, has led to my biggest regrets. My concerns that I didn’t (and still don’t) know my right path, my purpose, my next steps were what has caused me to hesitate and miss opportunities. I tried too hard to get it “right”.
I’m sure you’ve read this one from Rilke before, but it is a great one at these times: “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
    Rainer Maria Rilke

My advice brother continue to travel and try new things until you find your passion. Once you find your passion you’ll know what you want out your life and sometimes that comes late. I didn’t really figure out who I was as a person until I was like 23 and found what my true passions are. That’s where happiness is. Don’t chase money, don’t chase lust, or material things. Chase experiences, and try new things until you find what makes you happy and everything else will fall in place. 💯 you have a head start on people your age believe it or not.

I got to travel, meet people, and learn. From the time I found myself when I started living life came to me as I worked hard, loved people, and lived purposefully. I try to live this way now. Struggle makes us! never waste a good struggle. It will build you. For that purpose is my faith, Im a pastor and every day is an adventure because I live with a purpose not because I travel. Hi Jack. Thanks for being so honest and brave to share this.
I often tell my kids (18 and 19) that getting old is easy. Staying young, having fun and learn through play with a childish mindset is hard.
Do not rush things. Try different stuff and it doesn’t matter if it takes 4 months or 4 years. Suddenly you know what you want to do.

I really resonate with what you said at 4:14. I feel like it's a great privilege to be able to decide what we want to do with our lives, but having so many choices feels like both a blessing and a curse. The pressure to not choose wrong is immense. I think something that's reassuring is knowing that most people feel this way at 19, 20, 21, etc, but that we all inevitably figure it out. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

The world is your oyster & mine & I know you will feel so different in a year even if ‘nothing’ has changed, just as I’m sure you’ve felt every passing year this far into life. I hope you find inner peace & love & continue to be vulnerable in your journey. You’ll do great things simply by being your truest self everyday. i hope you are well. with love, Ave

Powerful and clear headed, that was. Love your honesty. We all go through it. And it doesn't stop. You think you have to sort it out now? You do. And again, like your own father, you will have to sort it again. But, having said that, I would point out this; think about what you are good at, think about what gives you pleasure in the doing of, think about the you that you would respect most. And don't think about the money - that will follow. That's the easy bit. You will go through this again and again. Most of us of have 3 or 4 different lives. I agree. Discomfort creates ambition. Coming from someone who left home at age 16 and got her own apartment and job due to extremely abusive parents I never experienced these anxieties. I had to make something out of myself out of survival. I worked my entire life and strived to raise my son in complete comfort without any trauma and he lives a similarly comfortable life except on land having all the love in the world and everything he needs. He is 18 now and suffers from the same anxieties about life. And I'm not biased because I'm his mom but he has these anxieties despite being one heck of a good looking boy and the best personality in the world, much like yourself. I tell him it's okay not to know where you're going right now, spend this time enjoying life, learning about yourself and what your values and beliefs are and save your money for when the time comes for you to strike out on your own. His anxieties will pass and so will yours. As someone who started life out with a bang, getting it together, and all the ambition of rising to the top what is left behind is the scars that put me in the situation that forced me to do so and a different kind of much more serious anxiety. The anxiety you have will leave no lasting scar because it will be gone but those people who you see on social media who "have it so together" guaranteed they suffered from something that forced them to get it together which has left some degree of scar and trauma that will never go away. Take comfort in that because your route to making your own way is both a blessing and beautiful. And I don't mean the boat life and traveling the world. I mean the love of a great family, the spiritual uplift of nature all around you, and the time to reflect on one's self and the world. Also, if it makes you feel any better I tell my son all the time just because the government says you are an adult at 18 means nothing. The Government are stupid and are the same people who once upon a time said women can't vote and it was legal to have a slave while at the same time claiming to be the land of the free. Your brain isn't done growing until age 25. In Ancient Greece people weren't considered an adult until age 30. At age 20 you still absolutely need the support of your family both financially and emotionally.

Jack, one thing I can tell you and know for sure, you will be successful at whatever your heart desires. Your parents and the relationship you have with your brother and sisters is very special. Your parents have done something amazing taking you on this journey of life that we have all been part of. You are going through what everyone of us goes through, living in a boat and travelling the world certainly isn't a negative it's a huge PLUS. Iam 55, and have had some amazing jobs and one piece of advice I will give you is " do what your heart desires, what makes you happy"
Don't ever think some hum drum 9-5 job is the answer. (Not saying you do)
Do what makes you happy, take opportunities and remember life doesn't have to be too serious. Most of us go through life always asking the question what do I want. Your are 100% normal and hearing you share your feelings with the world, those of us who tune in and watch your adventures I have to say you have just earned so much more respect from us all.

Hi Jack, I've been following your family's story for a long time. Your parents have done an outstanding job. Now you have grown up and I'm sure your parents are apprehensive, but they know this day had to come. They already seem to be planning for a day when it is just two of them on the boat. You are an outstanding sailor and they will feel the loss when you leave, but it has to happen. Plus, it will give Finn a chance to step up, just as you had the chance to step up when Anna left. I have a couple of pieces of advice. My first suggestion (as a high school educator whom has helped many kids through this transition and a parent of two grown up legends myself) would be to go and spend time with your older sister. She has negotiated this transition and she knows you probably better than anyone. Secondly, I am sure there are people with boats whom could use someone with your skills. Maybe sail on a different boat for a while. Finally (and this is pure caring Mum advice) As a dual American/Australian citizen with a lot of years on the planet, now is not the time to base yourself in the States. If I were counselling you, I think I would suggest you reach out to the podcast "Diary of a CEO". I know he is looking for video editors and you definitely have a good eye for content. London could be cool for a while! You got this.

Some good advice in these comments. Enjoy whatever time you spend with your parents and siblings-they’re lucky to have you and you’re lucky to have them. You seem like a good guy, Jack-if you decide to explore life on your own a bit next, the people you encounter will be fortunate to have your life touch theirs. You don’t have to do any one thing for the rest of your life, either-you can try different things and live in different places over time if you want. Since you are a person who wants to help others, you’ll naturally find ways to do that wherever you go.

Jack, you already are useful! You're so capable, we see that every video. Whether you're 20 or 40, we all wonder what we're meant to do, how we can best contribute. Seems the key is to figure out what you most enjoy doing, don't put a huge emphasis on making money. We all need money, but it should not be your top consideration. Give yourself room to figure out what you most enjoy doing and whether it could be a fulfilling career, whether it meets your criteria of contributing. And allow yourself to make many changes throughout your life. I finally found my passion at age 40 and made a huge change in careers. It's ok to stay on the boat too, if that is fulfilling to you. I have confidence in you Jack.

Jack, I’m 19 and I have no freaking idea what I’m doing with my life either. You’re not alone in feeling like this! I always question my choices or feel like I’m not good enough to do the thing I want. Im also torn between choosing a job with good money, or follow my heart.

Hey Jack, i'm 30 and just getting my life together. I was trying to figure out what i want to do thorugh all my 20's. And i still don't really know what exactly i want or where my goal is in life. I started studying this year(pretty late with 30) but i think someone is never too old for anything, expecially learning and imporoving oneself. You already have so much in such an early age. You are intelligent, you learned about other countrys and saw the world. You are in a position to be everything you want, and i can tell you, just go with the flow.

You have already started building your foundation through laying it out in this video and spoke about what you want including a family. You are going in your own direction whether you know what it is exactly or not. Your 20’s are for growing and changing. Wishing you all the best and just keep a open outlook and it will fall into place. Keep up the great work and we appreciate that you share it!😉

Jack this was an amazing introspection of where you are and what you are not satisfied at doing and what to change. Take your time and slowly mentally or scribe your ideas and projects away for the future. I am sure you will find it by continuing to learn from your Dad, Mom and many others you are blessed to come into contact with. Happy sailing to you and stay mentally and physically healthy.

Your father is such a great mentor. I’m the same age as your dad and I see how much you enjoy helping your dad. I know your a young man and want to do so much my son’s work and they have never been able to see everything you get to see. This whole time your dad has taught you to sail and work on the boat. You know how to change oil on very expensive diesel engines and maintenance that young people have not a clue. Your parents have showed you how to save money and do the right things with your money. You don’t have the influence of other kids my son is a recovering heroin addict at least you don’t have that in the middle of the ocean. I’ve watched your family for years and you have become a outstanding son and you have some great parents enjoy life with your parents cause when you come back to the states and you all get off that boat your going to miss it all I guarantee you.

I'm 23 and totally relate. You said, "I wanna be useful". There, do that thing. Every day keep that as your compass. Your path might vary every day, but I think you have the perfect mindset for where you are in life. You're actually way smarter than most our age, and you know you're in control, even if your humility makes you want to say "I dunno".
I think your dad would say "bull by the horns, Jack". You really have all the mental resources and tools to deal. You'll end up having made more right decisions than wrong, but as you said, you're not alone. Family is always there to help, and they will be honoured to do so.

The fact that your thinking about your future and wanting to be responsible shows a lot about your maturity. I went to college and changed my major three time and ended up in a trade school only to go back to college later in life to pursue what my true passion was. There are so many opportunities out there and we don't always see them even when they are right in front of us. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors and stay safe out there on the water.

Hey Jack! You're asking yourself all the right questions (yep! you're totally normal!). You're asking them much earlier in life than most of us. ...and after more experiences and adventures than most of us will have in our entire lives! I know the feeling of not having the answers right away. It can be frustrating, but stay calm and confident knowing you'll get answers. ...and stay alert because they may come to you in unexpected or unusual ways.
My 2 cents ...and, from what I've read, you've received some very good answers...
    Oh and great video!

I will pray for discernment in what direction you take & when. Remember each step is just that, a step. There is always good & not so good in each step. You can always get back to the family on the in betweens. You've got this.

Bro I'm 30. Started law school last year after spending most of my 20's traveling and simply trying to live life to the fullest. I still don't have it figured out entirely. Your general outlook on life will take you places homie. You'll find your path.

Hey man, you should be in absolutely 0 rush to figure out what you want to do. I just turned 21 in June and I’ve had your exact same thoughts and concerns. Our twenties in general is for us to figure out how to be an adult! You figure out what you like/don’t like, meet people, save money, and just live life. You got this brotha. Reach out if you need it. Or don’t, I can’t tell you what to do…
