My group switched to Pathfinder Second Edition during the OGL mess, and discovered the game we had always wished D&D to be. Super customizable character options and meaningful choices, dynamic combat, and the same ol' roleplay we've come to love without any of the WoTC/Hasbro shenanigans. And all the rules are free online. Definitely worth checking out if you're on the fence about leaving D&D.

Yeah, I haven't gotten to play a lot yet, but so far I'm really enjoying Pathfinder Second Edition (we're mostly a First Edition group).
Fun note, Paizo's also moving their space-faring Starfinder game to its Second Edition and the rules will be compatible with Pathfinder Second Edition, so in the next year or two, there's gonna be a lot of fun futuristic sci-fi options available, optionally if your group wants to add such a thing to their games (I know some of my group is interested).

    • @Firabe
      @Firabe 7 месяцев назад +3

Same here! Although, we started playing a year before the OGL mess. I DM'd Hoard of the Dragon Queen in 5e, and then I mastered the AP Quest For The Frozen Flame, and as DM I prefer the Paizo playstyle. Item progression is much easier and the players find it easier to adjust too.

@@smippycis6285 I'm playing both right now, and I love the mechanics of Pathfinder but prefer the flavor of 5e. If I were to run a game in the future, I would probably have it take place in Faerun with a combination of the pantheons, classes, and racial features from both systems. I would definitely stick solely with pf2e for leveling and action economy, though. Race, class, general and other feats are regularly given in addition to an increase of 4 stats at once (you start with 10 plus any bonuses for each and get your first round of increases at level one), so you can build a more versatile and well-rounded character without sacrificing advancement of your main stat. For actions, everyone gets 3 plus a reaction per turn, which can be spent on movement, attacks, or various tactical moves. There's an increasing success penalty against your roll for every attack past the first, and some things take multiple actions, like readying an action or summoning a creature, but it lets you have more opportunities to make an impact on the combat and not feel like you're wasting parts of your turn when you miss an attack and can't move for one reason or another

Along with these, I would recommend Vampire: The Masquerade. It's a TTRPG set in the World of Darkness setting, where night creatures like Vampires, Werewolves, and half-human/half-vampire creatures called Ghouls and other monsters have integrated into the modern world. It's also incredibly in-depth with character creation ranging from your feeding type to your ambitions and your sire if you want. The classes in the game are different vampire clans with different abilities, like the Toreador who have seductive and hypnotic abilities to stun enemies and prey, the Gangrel who focus on their primal side and turn into ferocious beasts, and the Tremere who have special blood casting abilities, to name a few. Attributes start with Physical, Social, and Mental and break down into more different sub-skills you'll use in various scenarios. There is a lot more I could say, but if you're interested, I recommend you check it out for yourself and see if it appeals to you.

I recommend getting the base World of Darkness books first to learn more about the world before jumping straight into Vampire or Werewolf. While they can be played separately the best way to play is by being able to incorporate all of them into the base World of Darkness setting. Also it's bigger than just Vsmpires and werewolves. There's changelings, hunters and wizards. Also different editions bring some really interesting variations to the world as in Requiem is different to Masquerade, Apocalypse is different to Forsaken ect. I got into TTRPG through the base WOD game setting and I recommend it for anyone interested in anything set in that universe to try first.

Avoid the Fifth Edition games, they're pretty terrible. Revised or 20th anniversary are the better versions of those games.
Another choice is the Chronicles of Darkness, the Second Edition of what was originally called "New World of Darkness." That has a core book for Mortal play that's also a great generic RPG system, and it's built around a better mechanical base and without the heavy Metaplot overhead WoD gamelines have. Changeling: The Lost is also easily one of the best games across both games.

The first couple Remaster books are out, most of the changes are in three categories:
Removing atavisms from DnD that don't actually do anything. Character ability scores, for example for just having the ability Mod.
Changing things that were too similar to the way they are in DnD, like that non-gods don't use the alignment grid, spell names, and so on.
Applying errata to the in-book content that's built up since the 2E launch and fixing things that were really broken, like the Witch.
For the most part, everything's still compatible. There's just some tweaks, like that instead of a Paladin being Lawful Good, they'd have the choice to Sanctify as Holy, while with an AntiPaladin, instead of Chaotic Evil, their god may either allow or mandate they Sanctify as Unholy. Generally outside of that, instead of alignment a character has Edicts and Anathema written down that they follow based on their beleifs.

I gotta put out my recommendation for Genesys - the system forgoes normal dice for a set of "narrative" dice which plugs a lot more nuance into rolls. You can have failure rolls that still benefit you, success rolls that still cause problems...it makes your wins and losses feel more substantial and interesting. Plus, the system is built around being highly homebrew friendly - you're heavily encouraged to create your own worlds and it's extremely easy to do, so if you're the creative sort you're in for a real treat.
Genesys is also great because it doesn't solely focus on combat. There are social encounters too, which are like debates, public speaking, or other social-based conflicts. You can built a soldier or a politician and have just as much viability in a Genesys campaign. Plus, combats don't take near as long and you have the capacity to run a fulfilling campaign in a short time span if you so choose, as the system works well for games that last 10-20 sessions. For people who realize they probably won't be finishing that 10-year-long dnd campaign, getting to FINISH a story sounds mighty appealing.

Other TTRPGs I really enjoyed playing:
Shadow of the Demon Lord - a pretty lethal horror-fantasy adventure style game with simple rules, good advancement customisation, and unique takes on many creatures (goblins and elves, for example).
Genesys - takes a bit of work to set up on the GM's end (you have to world-build a bit and choose what rule to add, or use one of the settings books), but you can run any sort of high-adventure game with many narrative elements. The dice system ends up with multiple possible results to a task: failure, success, triumph, despair, triumph and despair together, and all of which can also end up having an advantage or disadvantage. It's great for narrative play high adventure, and the settings are Star Wars, Android (Cyberpunk), and Runeterra (Fantasy).
Cortex Prime - also takes a bit of work to set up, as it's a toolkit (think a box of random Lego rather than a Lego set to build something specific), but once you get it running, it's a highly narrative game with good elements of character arcs, with more than just injuries (stress/trauma/exhaustion/depression etc are all things that can be affected). The system can be used to make almost anything like superheroes or space westerns (aka Marvel, Smallville or Firefly, all of which have games in the older Cortex Plus system), or high fantasy (Tales of Xadia, set in the world of The Dragon Prince, is a complete game using Cortex Priime).

      @XanderHarris1023 7 месяцев назад

@@icarue993 The following excerpts are just copy and pasted from the kick starter page. There is also free play test material available.
Cloudbreaker Alliance is a counter-apocalyptic fantasy tabletop roleplaying game that unites emergent narrative gameplay with collaborative problem-solving. It is highly accessible, requiring only two six-sided dice to play (2d6), tokens can be used to enhance the experience.
Drawing inspiration from Eastern and Western sources, this game is a heady concoction of Anime, Manga, JRPG, Wuxia, Star Trek and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. Baked into the system is the East Asian four-part storytelling structure of Kishotenketsu and Alfred Hitchock’s principle of suspense. This allows for narrative arcs to form naturally by just playing according to the rules.
As Cloudbreakers, players will take on various missions to protect the weak, discover new lifeforms and break cloud walls. In this game, not all problems can be solved by violence and they can often be resolved more easily using the right skills & toolkits. (Don’t waste your time fighting Razor Shells, just drive them away with an airhorn)
The modular character creation system separates roleplay from combat, so you will never have to sacrifice roleplay for combat effectiveness and vice versa. However, all the separate elements come together in critical situations, such as combat situations, as your personal skills and toolkit mastery will also be useful in combat.

Fantasy Flight games warhammer 40k systems - based on D100 system (so quite mechanicly complex), four main flavours are Dark Heresy ( investigations and counter-cult operations ), Rogue Trader ( adventures and throwing money at problems), Deathwatch ( combat power fantasy ) and Only War ( combat, but YOU play the cannon fodder ). BRUTAL combat, and fantastic lore. Currently discontinued, tho that also makes them guilt free to find in PDF form. There is also newer Wrath & Glory system, and some people seem to like it
World of Darkness - both old and new one. Not just one but whole system of systems with meh to good compatibility between diffrent ones. Core is about vampires and wherewolfes, but with expansions and fan creations you can play as practicaly every possible supernatural beeing ever concived but human mythologies. Fantastic ( if convoluted ) lore.

For my own two cents here, Traveller cannot be overlooked. I'm specifically speaking about Mongoose Traveller 2e, from Mongoose Publishing. Aside from being an interesting entry into skill-based systems (as opposed to class-based ones like DnD) and its unique character creation method, it's a very modular system - it only needs to be as complex as you want it to be and bits of the system can easily be discarded if you're not wanting to use them.
It's also a far more accessible edition - the Explorer's Edition is a quickstart book for just a single US dollar on DriveThruRPG and the RUclipsr Seth Skorkowsky has done a number of adventure reviews for it and a sizeable tutorial playlist for how the different aspects of MgT2e work.

If you're someone who loves Eberron but always wanted to mess around with the seedy underbelly of the city of Sharn, using Blades in the dark and just tweeking it can have you really getting into messing around with the likes of Clan Borimar. I've seen people do this with the city of Waterdeep too as they weren't entirely satisfied with the Dragon Heist adventure. It's a good way to use setting you enjoy while trying out a different way to explore them.
Also the Traveller RPG is a great space faring one I don't hear too many talk about! If you enjoy space adventures it's worthwhile having a squiz! Also for more wild west action you can't go past Deadlands!

Ive been getting into a system called Sword World. Its a Japanese TTRPG thats being fan translated and its a 2d6 game that is super popular overseas and has been the inspiration for everything from Lodoss War to Konosuba. If you want to play a very simple system to start with plenty of depth as you incorporate more of the optional rules plus some pretty crazy anime style classes like robot girls with plasma rifles, Sword World is a ton of fun!

It uses hexagonal tiles, fully customizable mechs/ suits to pilot, and uses a d20 system with supporting d6s ( the better your pilot is the more d6s you roll for a higher chance at a bonus of 6 and visa versa). Quinn quests literally just put a video out on it if you want a quick run down. Interpoint station does a bunch of streams of the game here on RUclips.

That way every one can have thier own conspiracies and own rare moments of group games our for avengers level threat situations. Also sense there isn't a real party most stick together at all cost no matter the scenario; there is a real chance for PvP. Our main vampire character dominate our former hunter character and now can go in mind no matter what. (Our former hunter character is now a vampire by the way but that is a different story)

If you want something a little more...strange, and using the Fate dice system I recommend Heavy Metal Thunder Mouse and it's expansion book "Beyond Thunder City", at the VERY least the Druid will love it. The way things are set up is a bit malleable but the premise is ALWAYS (with one small exception in the expansion book) mice on motorcycles in biker clubs....inspirations as stated by the creator himself include the TV show Sons of Anarchy and The Mouse and the Motorcycle, in the Mediography section, as things for reference and inspiration he also list Biker Mice from Mars, Secret of Nimh, Redwall (a PERSONAL favorite book series of mine as well), and for games he recommends Mouse Guard, Mice & Mystics (fun game that, kinda TTRPG lite good way to get the idea rolling with newbies), 1%er, Men of Mayhem, and Devil's Highway. You can set up the world how you want it, wanna be Biker Mice from Mars style human sized anthropomorphic mice? You can do that. Want to be regular sized mice dealing with your lives in a world all your own with regular sized animals as threats and humans who are either in the know about your ability to ride mini-motorcycles and talk or completely oblivious to it? You can do that too. Beyond Thunder City is a compilation book that took some extra settings and ideas that came later and put them into one book. There's a VERY old setting that uses bikes instead of Motorcycles, there's sockhop setting, there's even a straight up Akira style setting.

If 2d6 or 1d20 isn't enough for you, check out Prowlers and Paragons! It's a superhero-themed RPG you build your character from the ground up in a classless system by putting points into abilities that represent pools of d6s. Put 9 points into flight to fly at Mach 1. Put 14 into those muscles and you can lift up to 500 tons! And yes, when you make that Might check, you better believe you'll be rolling all 14d6! It's also got a meta currency system that you can spend to reroll, add to an existing roll, prevent yourself from getting KOd, and more! The game was inspired by Marvel and DC comics, but it's flexible enough to be used in all kinds of settings.

I played a DCC game where I had Joe the Average (all his stats ended up being 11), Nick Cage the Bee Mage (who died and resurrected thrice, before getting god level powers at the end) and Ozymandias, who was based on Crocodile Dundee. It was fun, chaotic, an interesting online quarantine experience and Magic is chaotic. Half the time I cast sleep was because the side effect made me intangible, which was way more useful. Also, because putting an enemy to sleep requires you to add a ‘wake-up’ condition using something readily available to you, I put a Beholder to sleep, made the condition ‘stabbed with a spear’ then confiscated all the spears from the party and stabbed the beholder to death in its sleep. Good times.

I’ve recently really gotten into the Borg games and 4 Against games, Darkness specifically but getting into 4 against the great old ones too. Plus if you’re not into rp or don’t have a DM it can be played with 1 player controlling 4 characters or two players controlling two characters each, character creation takes like 5 minutes or less. Plus everything is randomized behind character creation so there’s so much replayability with again no need for a DM unless you want 5 players with the DM managing the book and map itself.

  • @BreezyDefrag

Ironsworn! Ironsworn is amazing! Great Narrative system, uses random roll charts to help establish what's going on. And help guide your story whenever you hit a lull. I have been talking about it now because I feel like it doesn't quite get the attention it deserves. You can play the traditional Viking inspired vibe the game goes for, or even modify the world to fit what you need. There is also Ironsworn Starforged. Which lets you go to space under the same system. And you can play anything from Star Trek to Star Wars and everything in between. I will warn you. If you do run either engine it does have a bit of a set up period for the world, though Starforged is a bit more labor intensive with a solar system world development mentality. But it is so much fun. The engine can even be played Solo, Guided(GM), or freeform and let the Oracle charts guide the game.

    Other good suggestion for those looking for Tabletops set in a more sci-fi universe;
Battletech Destiny - set in the Battletech universe but is more narrative based with very simplified combat and story and narrative more put towards the front. It’s good for playing small campaigns focused around more 1shot / minor spread campaigns - I.e. a new merc group getting their start up in the universe with their end point being joining one of the next big wars. Or liberating a planet from the clutches of one of the houses or clans.
A Time of War - again set in the Battletech Universe but while Destiny is simple, A Time of War is very out there with character creation going quite heavy into depth - from faction start, to sub-faction origins, to your life as a child, teenager, schooling, if you attended academy’s and gained enough experience to be able to become certain things - I.e. someone who’s never piloted a mech in their life or has the right connections will never be given entry into one of the main Mechwarrior academy’s.
And while the system can be complicated this can help too as it can also be used in combination with Classis Battletech and its supplements allowing you to run your own unit in as much detail as you wish to also fighting all your battles using the Classic Tabletop system which can be extremely fun when your character have formed their own merc company of 12+ mechs and each of you are commanding your own lances on the field and having damage and deaths actually heavily stick/matter.
For those looking for more Combat based ones I can easily point Fantasy Flight Games old Warhammer 40,000 tabletop systems.
Deathwatch - you literally play a space marine in service to the deathwatch. Quite standard operation with you and your kill team sent to eliminate different threats depending on your DM and there is availability for narrative with interactions with the local people, having to investigate/track your target or even the inter chapter banter/rivalry you get - a Space Wolf and a Dark Angel will have that shared rivalry from the other; a Iron Hand, Salamander and Raven Guard may have a bit of bitterness but also strong bond of loyalty formed from the drop site massacre 10,000 years ago; the interactions between different ultramarine succession chapters and how some have swirved potentially from the codex.
Throw in the supplement books that bring in additional chapter, classes (including dreadnaughts and terminator honours) they also bring new armour and weapons which can actually allow players if they wish to run games with some small conversion back to the Horus Heresy Era.
Only War - similar to deathwatch… but you’re now the lowly guardsman. The system allows player to cooperate on either building a regiment their character can come from or using a pre-existing one the book provides one the GM creates.
This system can easily allow for so many scenarios from serving as a mechanised infantry unit, to light infantry fighting across a planets vast jungle, to tankers rolling armoured steel through the heart of an enemy formation, to drop troopers falling from the heavens onto great hive spires, to recon/specialist forces driving over the dunes of planets breaking the enemy backbone, to artillery boys drinking tana-tea and listening to the happy radios of your spotters.
There are also alot of nice class dynamics from the standard 5 guard classes (and with supplement books subclasses) but also half a dozen specialist classes from your stormtrooper, ecclesiastical priest, Mechanicus tech-priest, to an ogryn and his little buddy, to yes even a commissar - yes you can literally be Ibram Guant, Cain, Yarrick or just replicate the meme “drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword”.
For those with a wish for a more mix of the two.
Rouge Trader - you are a Rouge Trader. Your job is to essentially go about find undiscovered worlds not apart of the imperium and start good relations or not. Essentially you have a writ to do whatever the f-you want to a certain limit.
This game is extremely open for player being able to choose classes that will either supplement for a NPC rouge traders attachés, or a player rouge trader.
Plus there are ship building rules and maintenance.
    Dark Heresy (1.0 and 2.0

It's a post-post-apocalyptic setting, where the cataclysmic event was the entire world being overtaken by an explosive growth of massive trees, cacti, and fungi, and you can either travel over this new sea in ships your party customize at the start, which could potentially travel using chainsaw blades for propelling the ship forward. Or submersibles, and airships in the most recent supplement.
Lancer is a mecha game, with a rules light approach to roleplay particularly when you're not in your mech, and then a tactical/grid combat system inspired by 4E. Household is all about Littlings (Fairies, Sprites, Boggarts, Sluaghs) living in multiple nations within a three story XIX Century fantasy European house (basement, ground floor, second floor) it uses a sort of rules light D6 system, kinda more narrative focused. The Expanse rpg from Green Ronin, think it uses the same system as their Dragon Age game. Avatar Legends which was built off the PBTA system, and there's also a Dragon Prince game using Fandom's cortex system.
Critical Role has two systems, one still in development (Daggerheart), and then Illuminated World which takes a lot of inspiration from Forged in the Dark, which Candela Obscura uses.

I would recommend Dread. Horror RPG that just uses a Janga tower for actions and some background characters questions for setting up the story you plan to tell and boom. Done.

I would like to recommend L5R or Legend of the 5 Rings, there are a bunch of books and background stuff so if you want you can read all about the clans! It's been a second since I've played but I believe the system either runs on like all d8s or like all d6s, anyways highly recommend!

And here's the rulebook for the Call of Cthulhu. Yes, I know it says "Necronomicon" on it, just ignore that and be sure to read cover to cover.

Shadow of the Demon Lord is by far the best TTRPG I've played.
