About the car from the very early 1970s, with active aero, forced induction, a V12, a radar, AWD, and could sustain 3Gs of acceleration? THAT car? Yes. Yes I do.
I like the graphics in this game a lot, but it seems like there's just too much stuff to do that doesn't involve actual racing. I will probably never play this, but this was a really interesting review! Good work!
Thank you. I would have loved if the game matched the movie's art style even more, maybe even have the same "choppy" animation just got fun. It's definitely trying to have a bit of everything and not JUST be a racing game.
Is that so? That honestly is worse because I only felt they'd be acceptable in 2000 ha. Thanks for the info. It really just isn't fleshed out enough for me to feel like it's a modern game, especially for the price.
Ye, having played this back in 2000, I never really looked at it as a racing game where you had to unlock racing by playing party games. To me, this was just a minigame collection with the racing being one of the minigames.
In the original game the racing was with a top down camera, you could adjust who could use tricks in the settings menue, no one, you or everyone. There were more tracks and they felt more fleshed out. In fact there were more mini games in general and they all felt more fleshed out. I think they lost a lot when trying to adapt it for the switch as well.
I am Norwegian so you might as well fall off that limb that you are going out on! If my child was older I would get him this game, anyway you should pretend to be Norwegian this xmas and watch the movie. It is absolutely amazing.
Yeah, I 100% was going to watch the movie before doing the review and couldn't find it anywhere without importing it which would have taken too long to get to me.
I loved the film growing up and I played the game as a child, I feel the remaster of the original game lost some of the best elements. There were more minigames in the original and some were changed a lot and actually worked better in the original 2d format. In the 00's the format of the game, with lots of mini games, was really popular for kids games in Norway (not sure how it was in other places). Basically the original game was better, but also a product of it's time. I highly recommend watching the movie though, the stop-motion animation is really amazing!
I haven’t actually heard of this despite being in the UK. It feels really strange that you have to play a bunch of party-style games before you can race though. And it’s a shame that the controls don’t seem to work well with a controller. Hopefully things can be improved even though for some reason, it feels unlikely, so I’ll most likely be passing on this. Thanks for the review.
Yeah, I feel like they just tweaked some graphical stuff in the engine to make it work at higher resolutions and framerates and the gameplay is untouched. I have read there is a DS version as well. I feel better knowing someone in the UK is unfamiliar too ha.
I mean, this is a remake of a game from the very early 2000s, that is, the end of the multimedia era of pc entertainment. It would have felt like a conservative and well polished game in that genre. Don't think of Mario Kart, think of the Backpacker series. You click and explore the environment to find neat things at your own pace. That was half the fun of the game. Kids would sit for hours clicking on everything to see if they find something cool. It could be the longest name of a mountain in the world, or a neat little animation, a game could be unlocked, or you might even find a car part. The racing and the minigames weren't the main attraction. The main attraction was to relax and click on things to see what they do. And it worked great. It was a family game, mom, dad and the kids would all have a go at getting new records at the minigames. The racing was... just a free bonus. I'm writing this long-ass comment since you asked what the game would feel like in the 2000s when it was new. Well, that was how it felt. I was a kid back then. This game was played by approximately every singular kid who had access to a PC back then.
Your review is good. As a fan of the original movie and both owning and having completed the game (nintendo), I will share some of my experience. Basically the only reason to by this is nostalgia. If you have never watched the movie or played the 2000s game, then ill save you the dissapointment. It took me only 3-4 hours to gather every car parts and puzzels and then 1-2 hours completing the races. In other words, there is limited things to do. The minigames can be played for fun, but they do get boring very fast. They also droped about 50% of the minigames from the 2000s version. Graphics: very badly executed compared to todays standard. My switch started framedropping pretty bad during some of the grand prix races. I did not expect it since other games like Vreath of the Wild runs completly fine. This might be due to the game probably being designed for pc, but that i don't know. Story: It summs up the movie on an "ok" level. It fails to communicate some emotions in my opinion. This was also a problem in the 2000s version too. The worst story part is the race it self. The movie does a VERY good job at building up tension, emotions and excitement during the race, however the game is cut and divided so sudden and briefly that it gives you the feel of a rushed story. Imagine showing the lord of the rings and only seeing Sam and Frodo walking in different scenaries and each time somone enemies show up the cut goes to them running and then arriving to a new scenary until the ring landing i mount doom without golum fighting frodo at the edge. That is my best comparison of the editing of the race. In short don't buy this game. Only worth it for the nostalgia.
The game seems to have been made in order to please people like me who miss the old computer game it is based on. But they decided to focus on making it 3D and fancy looking, instead of making it fun to play. This game is in almost every way a downgrade of the older game, as the old one has more minigames, and less clunky controlls. (but it doesn't work on modern computers, and is impossible to get a hold of.) The new Flåklypa grand prix game, seemed like a game with a lot of promise. the day it released a lot of people were very dissapointed and some felt betrayed, as they had not informed the fans well about how what started as a remake, turned into their own vision of what it could be. Wich to most was a lesser version of a old classic.
Edit: I haven't played the new version, and steam reviews aren't great. Link in bottom. I've watched the movie as a child and played many hours of the old game. Playing it back then was like an interactive version of the movie, that recreates the atmosphere really well, and which you can go on adventures in. It’s like a light puzzle game finding all the games and interactive stuff hidden around the scenes. Eg. to play the air balloon game played in this movie, you have to click a balloon far away in the sky in a specific scene, and it’s exciting to find something new. I think it's a big misconception to think of it as a racing game, because it's a lot more than that and consists of a bunch of nice mini games enjoyable for both children and adults. On the old cd game cover it says “recommended age group: 4-107”. The racing part is like the final, and most advanced mini game. Seeing the remake makes me wanna play it, because it’s very true to both the old game and the movie, and seems to have maintained the atmosphere, with a lot more polygons, much improved camera controls and other nice additions. THAT car? Yes. Yes I do.
Flåklypa Grand Prix and Mary and Max are the two best stop motion movies ever made
Nice!!

I’m American and I love the stop-motion movie this game is based on! 🇳🇴
Nice!
Well it is very important to note that the Mario Kart car racing segments here are are new and that the 2000’s game was only really a point and click

Would love to see the flick but it isn't super easy to find at the moment sadly here in North America!

RUclips is currently offering it to me for rent or purchase, so it should be available. Maybe you just need a VPN or something.

I always loved this movie; my late granddad taped it on VHS when I was a toddler (I was born in 1982) and I do still have the tape!!
Thanks for sharing the memory and watching!

As a norwegian the movie was my childhood

I remember seeing this when I was a kid. The Game that is, that this is the remaster of. It's a kids game. Hence the mini games.
